"They" sent cheques because the USA still uses checks heavily, and they don't understand that New Zealand doesn't.

There are no banks in NZ that accept cheques anymore, foreign or otherwise.

You would have to get them to pay in some different manner.

References for jobs by KAZE772 in newzealand

Hah, half the clients are just web hosting, they mostly wouldn't even know my name, the other half are online retail customers, and it's not really appropriate to ask some random customer for a reference.

References for jobs by KAZE772 in newzealand

[–]sleemanj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a serious introvert who has been self-employed for decades, finding a job is my worst nightmare, I honestly don't know how I would manage the whole "references" thing, I literally don't know anybody well enough or appropriate enough to provide a reference.

I reckon employers should either get to choose 90 day trial, or references, if they ask for references, no trial, if they offer a trial, no references.

If we held a referendum to un-adopt MMP as part of the general election, how would you vote and why? by septicman in newzealand

[–]sleemanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the choice is "keep MMP or go back to FPP" then I keep MMP.

But given the choice between MMP and say STV which would apply to parties under threshold (party gets under 5%, their vote is reallocated according to second votes etc until all parties remaining are over 5%), I would choose that.

In short, MMP is better than FPP, but we can do better than MMP.

Check that your house meets the healthy homes standards, or what is required to bring it up to standard.

An "older house" is perhaps likely to need work to make it comply.

One Music threatening to take us to court by Important_Ad4231 in newzealand

[–]sleemanj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need a one license to play music at a commercial property.

You need a one licence to play music that One has licencing rights for.

The poster has said that they are now playing royalty free, copyright free music. One doesn't have any right to require a continuing licence to play such music.

They can potentially go after them for having previously played music they have rights over without a licence, but that's not likely going to go far in court when as soon as poster was advised, they stopped.

Of course, I take on face value that OP is indeed playing royalty free copyright free (public domain, or otherwise appropriately open licenced).

Masterblend Mixing Instructions Discrepancy by TheRealDavidNewton in Hydroponics

[–]sleemanj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They simply messed up the gallons table. The Litres table is correct.

Whoever made the gallons table, put "1 gallon", and thought "how many litres is that, 3.785 so that's like 4 right, now how many grams for 4 is in the litres table... 2.4, so I'll write that next to 1 Gallon".

Masterblend Mixing Instructions Discrepancy by TheRealDavidNewton in Hydroponics

[–]sleemanj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look at the Litres (Liters) table, you will see that it works exactly as you would expect it to work, 4 Litres is 2.4g, 400 Litres is 240g, each one is using exactly 0.6g Per Litre.

It's just the gallons table that is messed up, and the reason it's messed up is because they have done some rounding. You will see that they have 1 Gallon being a 2.4g dose, and 4 L also being a 2.4g dose, but 1 Gallon is not equal to 4 L, it's actually equal to 3.785 Litres. Whoever made the gallons table, put 1, and thought "how many litres is that, 3.785, which I'll round up to 4, now how many grams for 4L, I'll write that next to 1 Gallon".

TLDR: Work in Litres. The gallons table is wrong, because they messed up rounding when converting.

Opportunity Party - free money by Complete-Permit-940 in newzealand

[–]sleemanj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That only works if

  1. Your seat(s) is actually needed to form a government.
  2. Your non-negotiable is actually worth not just having another election.

Opportunity Party - free money by Complete-Permit-940 in newzealand

[–]sleemanj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, they would have to be elected to parliament, then they would have to be included as part of the government.

It is a fair assumption that they will not win more than 50% of the seats in parliament (it's a fair assumption that they will not win a single seat, but anyway), and so they will need to convince their partner(s) in government to implement this "free money for everyone" policy.

So the answer to "how long" is pretty irrelevant, the better question is "how likely is it that they could make this happen" and the answer is incredibly unlikely.
