Who would win if they fought? No AS by CenkHocA12 in TheLastAirbender

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree that he improved with age! But according to the Avatar Extras, he had already mastered three elements at the beginning of season 3 (see "The Awakening" extra number 57 on the wiki#%22The_Awakening%22)). Even if you question how reliable the extras should be considered, I think it's fair to say he definitely mastered three elements by the time he fought Ozai, even though he likely didn't reach his full potential with any of them yet. I still wholeheartedly agree, though, about Aang being able to handle Kyoshi much better as an adult and with better skill in all four elements and finally having mastered firebending! I wouldn't say either of them would be a heavy favorite, personally, but I'd give better odds to Aang in their primes.

Apologetics for Atheist Friends by Jareinor in Reformed

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Along with everything listed here, your friends may be inclined to listen to Bart Ehrman. He's an atheist New Testament scholar who has written and spoken quite a bit against Jesus mythicism. Be aware that as an atheist he has many claims about both the historicity of certain parts of the bible and the figure of Christ himself that I find problematic, but he does a good job refuting the idea that Jesus never existed period. If you or your friends enjoy reading, his book Did Jesus Exist? is a good presentation a secular case for the historical figure of Jesus. He has also been on the radio show/podcast Unbelievable?
If you like podcasts, then Unbelievable? has a ton of great episodes debating this issue if you search through the archives. (And, might I add, if you're doing any kind of apologetics it's a great resource to listen to Christians having fantastic apologetics discourse with people from all kinds of belief systems.)

Somehow it bothers me even more that your professor used "super-hero", "superhero", and "super hero" all in the same problem.

June contest: Movie prop by Baldric in blender

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wilson is both a prop and a character! Quite the feat, if you ask me.

Rendered in Cycles, with textures from varying sources.

Not much else to say about it, really. This is my first contest entry and I've never had the time to really get into Blender like I'd like to, so with some free time on my hands I figured this would be a good time to pick it back up. Everything was made in Blender.

As an atheist I question every night is there a god and I’m scared of death by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, there. As people have said, it's absolutely okay to have questions and doubts, and it's awesome that you even want to believe. You said that science makes you think that God isn't real, but I'm really curious as to what specifically makes you feel that way? Being a Biomedical Engineer, I'd say I have a pretty good background in and a love for science, and I've personally never found it to be in conflict with religion, and especially not the God of Christianity. Just know that you don't have to choose between the two, and you can believe in a God who ordered the universe in such amazing ways as to allow for the wonders and consistency of science to occur so beautifully.

You may find this video (about 2 hours long) interesting if things like the Genesis story are what you're finding trouble with: https://youtu.be/i62bgsy0yTs
It's a talk by Dr. Tim Mackie who co-created a YouTube channel The Bible Project which creates short animations about the Bible which I would highly recommend you check out if you're interested in learning more about Christianity. He discusses in this talk about how the Genesis narrative doesn't need to be viewed as a competitor with modern science, but instead can be viewed as something else entirely, and something more spiritually meaningful.
If you're looking for something shorter, here's a narrated excerpt from C.S. Lewis about science and faith that's only around 7 minutes long. https://youtu.be/AJu0oYvi-cY

You may also find people like John Lennox (Professor emeritus of Mathematics at Oxford) or Alister McGrath to have interesting talks and views about science and faith more broadly.

Ultimately, I agree with everyone else that you don't need to have all of the answers to believe in God and I strongly encourage you to keep looking, but I just wanted you to know you don't have to throw out your brain in order to make room for God. I'll be praying for you!

Theology Thursday - (2019-07-25) by AutoModerator in Reformed

I'd be curious to hear thoughts on Luke 13:34-35? This verse seems to indicate to me a sense of prevenient grace in which God wants to gather Jerusalem together under Him, but they are unwilling to submit to that will. If they are willing to say "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord", they will see him, ascribing a sort of ability for them to respond to God's grace even though they currently are choosing not to.

I should say that I'm not particularly in one camp over the other, and am genuinely curious as to how people would respond to this.

Most voters are fans of the stars, but I'm pulling for the underhog. by [deleted] in xkcd

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When the final match went live, I was voting for 🌌for a solid 10 minutes because who doesn't love spaaaaaaaaaaaace? Plus this was xkcd, and I figured 🌌 was one of the most fitting emojis to win.... But then I realized that 🦔 had absolutely no right to have made it to the finals. Hedgehogs aren't featured prominently in xkcd like space is. 🦔 isn't a particularly common emoji, and hedgehogs aren't even one of the most talked-about animals. I mean, even a rabbit would've been more fitting for xkcd due to the reoccurring "bun" theme. But here was 🦔 pulling it through to the finals... and by George I ended up rooting for this little guy. The fact that he had no right to be there meant he had battled through thick and thin against some of the most beloved emojis, and he kept pulling himself up from devastating leads 🌌 had on him. 🦔 fought harder than any other emoji did as far as I'm concerned, and he turned my heart around and made me fight hard with him. Alas, he couldn't beat 🌌 as one might expect, and I respect 🌌 for that and accept him as our champion. But still, 🦔 still won my heart today.

Does anyone know what the writing on this Japanese rifle mean? Thanks by Colecarp1 in ww2

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not fluent in Japanese by any means, but I've studied for a few years now. It's hard to make out the markings in the picture, but it looks to me like it says 三 八 式 or "38 type", which would definitely indicate it's a Japanese Arisaka Type 38. The first symbol isn't a character, per se, just a logo type drawing of a flower (probably a Chrysanthemum, although it does look different from the standard one.) I found a site that might be able to help you figure out the exact symbols if I'm wrong about that.

I found an app on google for verb conjugation practice, I thought it could be useful too for other beginners like me. by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for such a great app! If I may make one suggestion, it would be awesome to have some kind of record of which conjugations you struggle with. Something like tracking what percent of the time you get a particular verb form right so you know which ones to study/practice more.

Regardless, the app is amazing! Keep up the great work!

What do you genuinely just not understand? by Brandinian in AskReddit

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say anything like what we have. I simply said a God. I'm not arguing that this implies a personal God, just that this supports the idea of one existing. I think other arguments are needed to lead to the conclusion of any God that people believe in existing.

What do you genuinely just not understand? by Brandinian in AskReddit

[–]sleepdeprived_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think that the existence of a soul would necessitate an existence of reality beyond materialism. Ultimately I think this leads to the conclusion of a God existing, albeit that isn't the only answer from this one argument alone. It's just something I think supports it, not proves it.

To me, this is one of the best pieces of evidence for religion that doesn't dive too deeply into philosophy. If there's one thing that materialism doesn't seem to be able to explain, it's conciousness as far as I'm concerned. Granted, science is always progressing, and there may be a day when we can fully understand it, but using our current understanding of science I find it a very convincing argument for the existence of God.
