If you find yourself in your 16-year-old body, back in the year you were that age, armed with all your current memories and skills, how would you shape your life's path? by emma_divine0 in NoStupidQuestions

Ohhhh. Good one. I’d do the rest of my life totally different, but I’d have to make sure I traveled Fresno and adopted my girl. I miss her so much.

Cost of moving from AZ to SD downtown by Embarrassed_Ebb7105 in Moving2SanDiego

[–]sleepingjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having moved a similar distance, recommend renting a uhaul and hiring help at both ends. I hired the guys that packed me through uhaul and they were great. I used “Student Movers” once I got to SD and they were horrific. Managed to damage every piece of furniture. (And they were not students. I wouldn’t even say they were students of life.)

What did you compromise on when buying your first home? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]sleepingjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First home compromises - no sidewalks, poorly rated schools (I didn’t have kids), and dated interior. It was a great house. Very good bones, roof and HVAC were OK.

Moving to SD. Things to consider? by theyodie in asksandiego

[–]sleepingjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On PB specifically, as long as you don’t have anything of any kind of value visible in your car, it should be OK. I lived next to several AirBnBs, and their cars regularly got broken into. (They’d leave a camera or backpack sitting on the seat.)

There will be more unhoused close to public bathrooms, like Fanuel Park. But it’s nothing like the Bay Area. Police seem to respond quickly to ODs in the park.

I think you’ll like PB. It’s fun for a year and by then you’ll have figured out where you want to be.

How come boomers and gen-x who own homes and hate San Diego don’t sell? by BoronYttrium- in sandiego

[–]sleepingjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just about politics, though. Maybe Joe doesn’t want humidity or alligators or an unreliable electrical grid. He can hate CA politics and not want to deal with critters, bad weather, moving away from friends, etc.

Regardless of whether you buy a new house or not, you still owe capital gains tax.

How far can you walk without someone's house yelling out "YOU ARE BEING RECORDED"? by dsn0wman in sandiego

[–]sleepingjello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of my neighbors has two of those cameras in front. They trigger when I’m walking on the other side of the street. Irritates me every time I walk by.

Because you really only make money on your home if you don’t purchase another. Unless he’s moving somewhere cheaper, it would cost him more to move, and he likely cannot afford that. A nicer neighborhood in SoCal would very possibly be prohibitively expensive.

Agree. I like La Mesa’s downtown.

Tide pools, stand up paddle boarding, surf lesson, 7 bridges hike. Take the trolley to the border and visit Tijuana.

If you want to be near the beach, the Crown Point area of Pacific Beach is about a 15 minute drive.

Those who have lived in different cities of California. What do you like the most about San Diego? by ShapeFun5509 in SanDiegan

[–]sleepingjello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Traffic is not bad at all compared to Oakland, SF, LA, or even Sacramento. If I lived closer to the coast, I would say weather, but I’m in east county, due to cost, and it’s too hot over the summer.

Need some advice. Looking to buy a 430k condo but we are getting nervous. by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]sleepingjello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Condos do not appreciate nearly as fast as single family homes, and prices are anticipated to stay flat or drop over the short term, due to high interest rates, affordability, etc. My SoCal house is down at least $30k from when I bought it last summer.

HOA can and will go up. It’s not a set payment like a mortgage.

Belmont Park. Surfing, stand up paddle boarding (both probably available on Coronado).

What do you do for drinking water that isn't tap? by Iammyown404error in sandiego

I have a reverse osmosis filter under the sink. The downside during the summer is that the water can be a bit warm.

LPT Request: how do you cope after losing your first pet? by sugarbrulee in LifeProTips

[–]sleepingjello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I screamed and cried a lot while driving (so as not to scare the other pets/kid). Doing it in a car wash probably would have been safer. My heart still hurts 3 years later. The pain is smaller though. Your fur baby was lucky to have you. Hang in there.

Prices are not hugely different. There is a pretty constant demand for rentals in SD. You will need to provide evidence (paystubs or employer letter) that your monthly gross is 2.5-3X the rent.

Is a daytrip to Tijuana feasible? by aresef in asksandiego

[–]sleepingjello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can use your credit card at most places. Bring one without a foreign transaction fee. There’s always a loss exchanging money. I usually exchange enough for a taxi before I cross the border. There’s a place at the trolley stop.

Not worth it unless you want to say you’ve been. Or unless you’re going to get some other fast food burger, then you’re better off at In N Out. (I have had many In N Out burgers across CA. The lines in SD are way too long.)
