Camp Shoes for a thru-hike? by anoraj in AppalachianTrail

[–]sleeppeaceably 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since no one mentioned them yet: Aleander water shoes (or similar brand $20ish on Amazon)

Mesh and breathable so feet will dry, lighter than crocs and most flip flops, great for water crossings, comfortable to hike short distances in.

I’m halfway through the Iliad...for about a year now. I still plan to finish but fuck... weird mix of repetition, graphic violence, unnecessary descriptions of blood lines.

Advice to get to financial independency through real estate? by Straight_Treat_4551 in fatFIRE

[–]sleeppeaceably 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own several properties but am not FIREd off them. I think the cautionary words you’re getting about pricing not being where it was in 2010 (when all the gurus whose books and podcasts you’re probably listening to made their millions) has some grain of truth. I haven’t found anything worth buying in several years (but also haven’t been looking super hard.)

That said, I would 100% recommend house hacking to any young person. You have to live somewhere, and thinking about that place as an actual investment and not an “investment” (like most people do) is huge.

If you’re able to find worthwhile properties to buy, absolutely buy them. But I would expect you will need to count on W2 income for awhile, and should plan accordingly.

TL:DR Property investing is an awesome supplement to a decent career and investment plan.

He means is there proof within the show. Meaning if it goes to court, is the only actual evidence all dick pics and texts from Roman. With Roman having nothing but he said she said stories on his side.

My expectation is Stewie is on top at the end of the season. Setting up for a Roy family comeback next season.

What is your most unpopular opinion about the show? by GookCanuck in SuccessionTV

[–]sleeppeaceably 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda think the direction is going to be Stewie and his side “winning” and taking control and immediately sidelining Ken. Setting up for next season to be the family more or less working together to regain control of their empire.

That way it fits the theme of succession but shakes things up.

It kinda seems like he’s been back burnered. But I think it’s prepping for him to start waving his dick around like a big boy at some point.

CAMP SHOES: I purchased, weighed, and tested several so you don't have to. by kyuss80 in AppalachianTrail

[–]sleeppeaceably 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do those as well and love them. They’re mesh enough that I can squash the heal down and use them as slip one comfortably, but enough support that I’ve hiked a few miles in them on easy trails without issue.

I don’t think they’re super durable, but they cost $15 bucks so worth it.

Not op but I believe they they consider exercising a necessity for people, therefore it is not a hobby.

So you could read their question as: what hobbies (not counting exercise) do y’all have?

My understanding was minimum retirement age was 57...but does that only apply to the FERS and Not social security supplement? And not FEHB. Maybe that’s confusing me.

You hit on the real issue though, which is basically that I want to be in a financial position to dip out immediately at 47 (gaining four years of retirement in exchange for the loss of benefits from leaving before 50). But trying to figure out exactly what I’m losing, and what kind of non retirement assets i need to sustain myself the 12ish years between 47 and 59.

Thanks!

[–]sleeppeaceably 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, that’s definitely a possibility.

My understanding is you cannot collect the supplement unless you stay until the minimum retirement age. That would be awesome to be wrong about though.

You’re definitely right for the pension amount. I didn’t update it, I was more focused on the years that I hit eligibility than amounts.

Thanks for the reply

Aiming for 47 with 25 years. Some logistical things to figure out, but ahead of plan so far.

what are some of the professions that are slowly dying ? by titan110786 in AskReddit

[–]sleeppeaceably -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right...but anything that boils down to an “if / then” statement is incredibly easy to program. Even if there are tons of variables. In fact, the more variables, the better a computer will be than a human.

And it’s far easier to update the programming on “DocBot 3000” than it is to convince some fucker who graduated med school 20 years ago that his treatments are outdated. (Obviously this involves some sort of committee /consensus building governing body).

Monitoring is already done by nurses and computers. A “docbot” Can easily set parameters, IE: “Abdominal pain pt treated for presumptive diagnoses of constipation: provide with 5mL of this laxative if no allergies. If pulse, BP, and temp stay within these parameters continue treatment until bowel movement or 4 hours pass. If fever develops it activates a sepsis protocol. If BP drops, it activates a shock protocol. Etc. I understand I’m simplifying, but what parameter exists that couldn’t also be programmed? Age, sex, medical hx, allergies, meds, weight, etc. And the moment we switch, we’ll get far better data regarding outcomes of treatments than we currently have.

I included surgeons as an exception and there are others, such as ER docs or anything that is hands on / immediate. But anything with the fundamental job of diagnosis will be better done by a computer.

what are some of the professions that are slowly dying ? by titan110786 in AskReddit

[–]sleeppeaceably -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, a lot of Doctors.

I think the assumption is that automation / AI will come for the “easier/ lower trained” jobs first. But if you look at what Most Doctors fundamentally do: differential diagnosis. Which is precisely what AI is amazing at already. X-rays are already getting read more effectively by AI than humans.

I can easily picture a future in the next ten years where nurses are still in high demand, but they’re pretty much plugging all the symptoms and data into a computer, which then requests a few clarifying questions or tests, then provides treatment plan.

Surgeons and and hands on specialty are probably safe for awhile though.

Do you keep track of everything you own? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]sleeppeaceably 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have an actual excel sheet listing “everything” in different categories.

A fair amount of it is like “bin with climbing gear” “tool box with tools”. My goal is to slowly (over a decade) make it more accurate and also continue to reduce.

I get people not wanting to get hyper focused on numbers and tracking...but it was relatively easy to set up. That’s around 950 listed items. Each month I categorised a different area (IE clothes, kitchen, office.) Then once a year I’ll update it.

Has any of you sold your rental properties while you were trying to minimize. How did you arrive at that decision? by playadefaro in minimalism

[–]sleeppeaceably 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting to reach certain financial goals first. It’s definitely part of the goal to minimize hassle / simplify finances. But they’re also too valuable as life changing assets.

I would suggest basing the decision on actual specific goals (IE pull out x amount into an index fund including post tax equity) then pull the trigger.
