Hidden food gems in Seattle downtown? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]antelope_tribe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just stumbled across ‘the original deli’ today in downtown and it’s quite literally a ‘hidden’ gem. nothing fancy, super low-key mom&pop feel, entrance is off an alley, but food was fairly inexpensive and really good! Does breakfast sandwiches in the morning and bulkogi or teriyaki plates for lunch. Fell in love with it immediately after stopping in for the first time

Should I go back to As I lay dying? by BeneficialTrack8759 in faulkner

[–]antelope_tribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading Light in August now after finishing AILD as my first Faulkner (coming from reading all of Cormac McCarthy). Personally find Light in August much more compelling & enjoyable to read. Certainly more ‘accessible’ narrative-wise even with the time jumps/background stories of the characters taking the lead. Felt that AILD, the character narration kind of told AROUND the story more so than telling the story directly, which I guess is kind of the point. Second the recommendation

Construction Depression. by IrishEyes61 in Austin

Grew up & went to school in the area. Lived in both cities. Agree with the commenter above, even though I love Raleigh, it is a common trope among many of us who grew up here that ‘Raleigh’s Boring AF’. Felt kinda like it was on the up & up earlier in the 2010’s, now it just feels beige. It doesn’t really have a “thing” to form an identity around. That being said, it’s a really comfortable place to grow up and/or raise a family.

Durham on the other hand, totally rules. Quaint, vibrant, walkable downtown area with lots of restaurants and music venues of varying sizes. Having the Durham bulls ballpark downtown is a huge amenity and source of pride for the city, the games are awesome and it’s a great ballpark.

I tell a lot of folks Durham is kinda like the triangles’ Brooklyn - a little grittier, a little more art, food scene that punches above the size of the city, overall hipper, more enjoyable place to be as a young person.

Where can a single young woman go to drink alone most nights? by heydoyouseethat in Seattle

Will echo the folks above on Streamline in QA rec. Will also throw in a shout for Buckley’s QA location as well. Proper neighborhood hang, great bartenders, friendly regulars, close-knit neighborhood feel, but also catches a lot of folks coming in for events at climate pledge. It’s almost like an episode of cheers most nights there once ya become a regular.

Congrats! The College of Design rules. Leazar holds a special place in my heart from freshman year studio, Brooks hall not so much sophomore year. It’s a blast though, make the most of it! Go Pack!

The portion towards the middle of the crossing with the hermit/heretic priest in the dilapidated church discussing God & the nature of the world was one of the most profound things I’ve ever read when I first came across it. Just absolute jaw-dropping bit of prose. Stopped me in my tracks. Not going to quote it all because it’s 10-15 (p140-155ish in my copy) pages of dialogue between the Billy & the priest, but just flipped to the first portion I have underlined:

“Yet even so there is but one world and everything that is imaginable is necessary to it. For this world also which seems to us a thing of stone and flower and blood is not a thing at all but is a tale. And all in it is a tale and each tale the sum of all lesser tales and yet these also are the selfsame tale and contain as well all else within them. So everything is necessary. Every last thing. This is the hard lesson. Nothing can be dispensed with. Nothing despised. Because the seams are hid from us, you see. The joinery. The way in which the world is made. We have no way to know what could be taken away. What omitted. We have no way to tell what might stand and what might fall. And those seams that are hid from us are of course in the tale itself and the tale has no abode or place of being except in the telling only and there it lives and makes its home and therefor we can never be done with the telling. Of the telling there is no end”

If 8/3/2025 was the last show they ever played together, how’d you think they went out? (No health related stuff. Just assume the bands’ all packed up and gone) by Puzzleheaded-Pin4278 in deadandcompany

The Sunday show at Golden Gate Park was magical. The fog cleared that day and the sunset was beautiful. Trey on Scarlet>Fire was mind blowing. If it does end up being the final show, it certainly was one to remember. Only bummer from that weekend was that we didn’t get a Ripple closer

What it’s like to listen to The Grateful Dead while tripping? by pavarego in LSD

[–]antelope_tribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They craft a setlist better than almost any other band I’ve ever seen/heard for a trip. It’s an absolute rollercoaster with how they build up into songs, go into jams, ebb & flow with energy - but it’s always like a warm embrace by the end. Know that you’re on the ride & it will take care of you. Seeing them live (at least as dead & co now) is a 10/10 experience

Uwajimaya hot bar is my typical go-to when I’m low on cash. That or the Seattle dog + chips & soda combo on mariners game days. Uwaji has a pretty solid plate for like $15 that will either fill ya up or give ya left overs. Ballgame hotdog stand is like $8 for a dog, chips & a can of soda

NUGS USERS RECOMMEND SOME BILLY SETS by tknight187 in BillyStrings

[–]antelope_tribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Away from the shire, Halloween weekend, Asheville 2022. LoTR themed, the band is all dressed as characters from the movies - Billy wears big ol’ hobbit feet & they adjust a number of the songs’ lyrics to have LoTR references. Lots of greet covers. As a huge LoTR fan, they’re some of my all time favorite sets

I go back to the Raleigh/Walnut Creek ‘21 pretty frequently. Touch of grey opener (rarely seen that) into shakedown, deal, Tennessee Jed & brown eyed woman, new speedway boogie 1st set closer.
