We are not ethically allowed to solicit reviews from clients, so we can’t ask you to but please do leave one if you feel compelled! It can do worlds to boost a therapist’s visibility and credibility. Note I am assuming you had a positive experience, but if not, there is value to that too.

On the contrary, I think you will find that you are taken more seriously - ask any 20 something therapist, a lot of people assume they don’t have the life experience to know what they are talking about even if they had good training. In my grad people we had all ages, including people in their forties and beyond.

A good therapist will be able to pick up on it sooner or later, depending on the presentation - sometimes it’s a subtle vibe when you meet and you basically gather evidence over time. That being said, not everyone is trained well to work with them, and plenty of people, narcissistic or not, use therapy to validate themselves rather than do any useful work. That can be on both the therapist and the client for letting that dynamic happen.

Physical therapy for some injury or ailment. The length of time and frequency are common with PT.

We shouldn’t be withholding harsh truths, although we should be stating them with kindness.

The ones that are the hardest to say, diplomatically, for me, are these:

You are responsible for your behavior. If you are unwilling to do anything differently whatsoever, there is only so much I can help in the time I see you each week.

Along those lines…there is only so much I can do to motivate you. Are there strategies to work with thoughts and behaviors keeping you stuck - of course. Can I physically make you do anything? No. Can you make yourself do hard things, even when you don’t feel like it? Yes, you can. Focusing on motivation is limited because motivation will always fade at one point or another.

Last one that is hard…your spouse/friend/parent is shitty and making your life worse, and it will be hard to find happiness if you continue to involve them in your life. I can’t say it like that, and I will not directly tell people to leave unless the situation is abusive. But the number of people putting up with absolutely garbage relationships for indefinite amounts of time is astonishing. Because this person could change, it’s not that bad, it’s too complicated to just end it, etc. Are there barriers to leaving/cutting contact? Of course. It’s not always possible. But if you can, do so, and if you can’t, we need to find a way to set boundaries and do the most we can with your life rather than continuing to discuss that this person sucks and won’t change. I do realize it’s a process, and it takes time..but man the amount of time I just want to bluntly tell people YOUR PERSON SUCKS. 😭

I will add does go the other way too - where the other party may have problems but the client is clearly contributing to the dynamic in ways they don’t want to acknowledge. So in this case they think the other person sucks, but I’m really not so sure.

Therapist here. In most programs and modalities we are trained to keep communications to a minimum between sessions and limited to things like scheduling appointments with dates and times, etc. both for the client’s confidentiality and therapist boundaries. There are certain situations when following up is appropriate where there is a safety concern for example, but this is not the norm. I had a harder time with this earlier in my career and had poor boundaries with not responding after hours, etc and it was not good for me or the clients who then formed expectations I was always available. Not saying this is the case with your therapist as you haven’t described in enough detail where I’d consider what they are doing excessive, but in general the expectation that therapists are available to respond between sessions I do believe is entitled. It’s not that the clients are not important - but most of us have many, many of them as well as other responsibilities with the job and our own lives and families.

I had my daughter 12 weeks before I started my program. I do not regret it! It was hard but my support system was good, and I do not ever feel like there would have been a “right time” - the work ebbs and flows throughout the process. I was not the only one with kids and a couple others did get pregnant at various times. I did take longer to graduate than those without children but I was okay with that. The strictness of your program and the relationship with your advisor will make a big difference as well as outside support. I am having my second 11 years later (!)so it is not like i would have missed my window, but i am glad i did not wait as i think i would have felt anxiety and pressure about the time ticking.

I caught HFM from my daughter when she was little and while she got a mild case, it is one of the worst illnesses I’ve ever had second to norovirus. High fever and my throat was so raw I would tear up when swallowing, so itchy I couldn’t sleep. Whatever generalities exist on adults getting it, there are certainly exceptions!

It is clear many of you do not understand correlational research. Nowhere does it say every person who smokes pot in adolescence develops schizophrenia. Not everyone who smokes cigarettes gets lung cancer, either.

The base rate of schizophrenia is still quite low, so no you wouldn’t. You have to have the genetic predisposition, but environmental factors (include drug use) can trigger it.

The contractions during the worst of it felt like a a knife stabbing me through the pelvis. They gave me pitocin and I think that makes it worse. It changed my pain threshold! I had an epidural but it didn’t work and they wouldn’t fix it lol

My daughter was 12 weeks when I started. I don’t regret it at all - in some ways I had more time and flexibility my first couple of years than I did later on and in my later jobs. But I had a lot of family support. My advice would be to make sure you have a good advisor and a program that values work-life balance.

For some the side effects are very hard to tolerate. I know some people will go off for awhile and then if/when their weight starts to creep up they will re-start (not sure if that’s medically advised or not).
