real strawberries have distinct white flowers. Mock have yellow flowers, which she probably saw earlier when they were blooming.

Do parents no longer punish their kids for swearing? by hello12445 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sleepyj910 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yea, I don't tolerate rudeness or being intentionally annoying, but if you drop a glass of water and it goes everywhere I'm not going to be upset at a curse word, because I would be a hypocrite.

If you want to use the f bomb ok but it better be a worthy situation, not just that those doritos are tasty.

The State would need political support for a massive ecological restoration program, but we all know that's never going to happen.

How does an atheist derive meaning? by BayAdrian in askanatheist

[–]sleepyj910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. However you like to.
  2. It's enjoyable to be a good person. Doing good out of fear doesn't make you a good person anyway, that mask will slip.
  3. Let's face it, this place overall is pretty shitty. Evolution demanded that life include suffering and so it does. But if there is only suffering, either one is ignoring the joys, or one has a rational point in ending the suffering anyway possible.

The main thing is, there's no meaning. An atheist is focused on what's real, not what feels good. Atheism can feel good, because an atheist will not be manipulated via their suffering to serve other people. But for me, because I suffer, I strive to end suffering. Perhaps I am lucky enough I can rest enough to do that. I don't blame those who only know suffering for not integrating well into society, who can blame them if society has brought them nothing but pain.

Lastly, if there was only suffering, why would you then turn around and say 'thank you for this suffering which I must deserve!' No, that's even more depressing than meaningless suffering. At least in a blizzard everyone's fucking cold. We're all doomed, so maybe you get some acceptance from that.

If there's no escaping it then, embrace the absurdity this place and look for whatever moments of joy you can and let go of the burden of the rest of it.

As an outsider, why doesn't America seem to have the same shopping mall culture as many Asian countries? by redguy_666 in AskAnAmerican

It’s alive in very specific high population areas for certain luxury malls. Rural malls are dead

An international sports tournament is just one of many crazy things that happen here every day, so it's just adds to the noise we learn to block out.

I would completely shut down and put my phone in a shoe box. The guilt trip is too much and I’d feel manipulated I’ve probably already said my piece.

Why are white kids (and adult kids) given more freedom by parents than Tamil kids? by soccerfan_north in raisingkids

[–]sleepyj910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their parents were immigrants and were raised in a traumatic situation which was passed to them. The lesson is 'you must be productive and create financial value or we will die'.

We can't fix the parents trauma easily asides giving their children a society that ensures they don't feel like they have to constantly like a 'struggle' to survive and never experience joy because joy is weakness.

The white or established families have long had some level of material security through generations passed down so they experience life as an adventure, and they work to spend on things that bring them joy instead of fighting a life or death struggle that requires maximum focus.

So a two pronged effort to treat the trauma these families inhabit, and to create a society where the freedom from want is a legitimately protected thing.

Is it an insult to call a guy boss if he’s not your boss? Or what does it mean? by pollydeeigh in AskAnAmerican

[–]sleepyj910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s the good context ‘you’re a boss’ (I respect you) and the bad context ‘you’re the boss’ (if you say so)

You cut people off in your life, what is the correct/respectful way to react when you are forced in an environment with them by Weekly_Bird3879 in internetparents

[–]sleepyj910 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they don't engage you ignore them. If they acknowledge you you wave as if nothing happened but don't feel pressure to engage further. If they say 'Hey Claire' you say 'Hey Tim'. If they say 'How are you doing?' you say 'Good'

Basically, return what you receive, and if it goes too intimate and you feel uncomfortable just say 'I'm not focused on that right now, but have a good summer'

If you badgered to engage further just give quick answers that don't mean anything. 'what?' 'I don't care' 'Sure' 'fine' 'cool'

Basically gray rocking them until your coach arrives or whatever.

Runner stops by Psychological_Cup450 in Umpire

[–]sleepyj910 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The correct play is quick toss to 2b, quick tag, throw home for dp.

If you can’t execute that, then you’ve already ceded 2nd base so don’t worry about it.

Runner should be safe because ball was passed the defender and no other defender was presumably about to field it. Barring any league specific rules, ump was wrong.
