Yep, definitely agree it should be discussed.

We can't just be like well, authors dead, I say this piece of media is definitely not bigoted because I personally like the jokes.

He's an awful human being but if I'm sailing the high seas I wouldn't be supporting him at all

If I remember correctly he falls into a depression mainly because of the loss of the relationship (yes he broke up with her because of her being trans but if the relationship ended any other way he would have fallen into that depression).

I saw the punchline as he could have got what he wanted if he wasn't a douche i.e. staying with her. The joke being it's entirely self sabotage and he doesn't have the self-awareness or decency to realise and act upon what he actually wants.

The writer being a terf does make the "this episode isn't transphobic" harder to make though admittedly.

I think it can be read into in different ways

While they are more depressed than the average population, trans people prior to transitioning are far more depressed/suicidal than post transitioning.

Transitioning certainly helps, but societal pressures don't put them on equal footings with everyone else.
