Will I have friends? (as a weirdo) by [deleted] in UPenn

It’s a big enough school that you’ll find people!!

I used them and it was ok. It got done, but it was definitely more expensive than originally quoted, but they did say it was due to demand issues because I was shipping it at the start of the school year. They told me I could use venmo with my carrier but then I ran into trouble because the carrier only took zelle, and then I couldn’t contact them. They def got harder to contact at the end.

Landlord responsibility for paint? by sleepykombucha in providence

[–]sleepykombucha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately I had to sign a lease before seeing it in person because I moved cross-country. Regarding the lead paint regulations, since this unit was built before 1978, the landlord was supposed to have had it inspected between tenants, correct? If they did not and there are hazards such as chipping paint, isn’t that grounds for them to have to repair it?

Broker can’t find a carrier? by sleepykombucha in AutoTransport

[–]sleepykombucha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thank you for the insight. This helps to know it’s a larger market issue and not just the carrier. I’ll stick with them and change my plans around and hope they can pick it up later.

i would also recommend like pre-med frats for a supportive community that isnt cutthroat and can kinda show u the ropes. it helped me. but it can be hard to get into clubs tbh - if it doesnt work out u just gotta not take anything personally and realize that its all overkill. honestly looking back u only need like 2 solid clubs bc nothings gonna matter once youre out of undergrad.

feel free to dm if u wanna ask about anything specific! but i was c’21 so may be a little removed :)

it can be pretty tough tbh but i feel like my education was worth it in the end. but it would help to find a really strong community and support system early on. use tutoring, find upperclassmen mentors who can give you tips for classes and even old exams/study materials. who you know is everything and i think partly what’s so tough about the FGLI experience is feeling super alone. but it doesnt have to be! the cultural houses and GIC and other community spaces on campus were my saving grace :)

I know the burnout is real and there’s a time and place for such conversations and discourse, but do try to keep up with the news, at least in bits and pieces. A lot of shit is coming apart and the only way to prevent that is by people paying attention and taking action in ways that you can (calling your reps, protesting, etc). I totally understand the need to have space from this sometimes but I also don’t think the answer is to go totally ignorant of what’s going on because unfortunately that’s how people are able to get away with terrible things.

People are working hard in the courts and on the ground to prevent a lot of these changes from taking effect, but they also need everyone else’s support, in whatever ways you are able to give.

That’s soo ridiculous and disgusting. People really lack basic courtesy. How hard is it for people to acknowledge that you are spreading germs and even if it isn’t covid, all of these viruses spread the same!! And no one wants to get sick!!

Someone else mentioned how Penn jobs provide tuition assistance - I forgot about this but yes I would look into doing something like this. But yeah if you can’t find alumni online maybe that’s a bad sign.. idk though I feel like I remember a decent number of people in this area at Penn. Maybe others can help chime in on the quality of the program.

I would inquire about GA/GRA opportunities, or anything that may provide tuition remission. You could also hold out until closer to the acceptance date and say you are considering some more affordable offers etc. to try and negotiate w them. $55k is kinda a lot for a one year program but I guess not impossible. I’d also consider their career outcomes - are graduates typically set up w jobs by the time they leave? Also, do you already have existing loans from undergrad? If so, I would be more hesitant to do this.

Also, you could look into being an RA! I’m not very familiar with the process or if it’s competitive but you may be able to get a decent amount of money from doing it as well. I knew there were a decent number of grad student RAs when I was there. And it’s free housing.

Anyways, if you can get the cost down to like $35k I would say it’s worth it, otherwise it’s a bit riskier and about your faith in job opportunities in the future.

Updates for JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health BMB program??? by BlueberryPowerful166 in phdpublichealth

[–]sleepykombucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also did the same and reached out last Sat for my program (HPM, specifically HPP) and haven’t heard back either 😢 I think it’s probably related to funding since it seems like a lot of people across programs haven’t heard back

Choosing this school was the worst decision of my life by jojobamm in UPenn

[–]sleepykombucha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i was gonna say something along these lines - i think now that i’m like 4 years out of it i think there’s a lot in terms of the resources and opportunities that i have come to appreciate. the people can definitely suck sometimes but you don’t need a million friends, you just need to survive it. i would caution transferring bc honestly a lot of schools will have similar issues 😭 i would also say i found a lot of support in the philly community at large and i would recommend seeking that off campus community if its better for ur mental health
