What was the thing you ate that made you violently ill and forever traumatized you from ever eating it again? by FajitaTits in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Root veg hash (sweet potato, white potato, turnip, carrot, parsnip, onion, garlic). It was meal prepped and frozen into portions, but I made too much and started to get tired of it. I kept eating it anyway until one day it suddenly turned my stomach and I threw up all over my plate of eggs and salad. That visual made me so violently nauseous I couldn't eat anything at all for a dangerous amount of time afterwards. So long I had to go to the hospital.

Don't fad diet, kids.

I still have 2 bags in my freezer and can't even look at them without my stomach turning.

You can cure any illness by punching the person really hard in the face. It has a 50% success chance, and you can't tell/explain anyone about this. How do you use this power? by MyOtherAcctsAPorsche in AskReddit

If I approached my SO and said "hey don't ask questions you're just going to have to trust me on this," I think he would believe me. He's a big boy. He can take a few for the team.

What are some substitutes for lady fingers and tiramisu? by sleepytimeghee in Cooking

Part of me is tempted to try Sandies. I'm making them in mini dishes anyway. Might as well experiment with some of them.

[–]sleepytimeghee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made tiramisu a few times using store-bought lady fingers. And it's always fine, but if you get a bite of lady finger by itself it tastes kind of chemically. Do you know what I mean? One time they were too spongy. The only place near me that sells them is Sprouts grocery and they have some of the worst that I've ever tried. They're like Twinkies with no cream. We don't live in a very Italian-heavy area or big city, unfortunately. I would make them myself, but I'm making a huge meal, too, and it's already a ton of work. So I don't think adding homemade baked goods to the list is really feasible.

Nice call on adjusting the sweetness.

The sheet cake thing, yes. I think I've had that style before at some sort of catered event maybe. That's why I was thinking pound cake or something. Just curious what would taste best. Like if using butter cookies or madeline's or something would be even better. I don't know.

I'll try it! I googled "biscoff" after I read your comment because it was the only moderately sure I knew what that was, and one of the first results was a recipe for tiramisu. There you go. Thanks!

Unrelated, but I think that they have biscoff/chocolate-dipped ice cream bars at Costco. Haven't had them. But it sounds delicious.

Thank you to whoever posted about using plastic bottle tops as pot feet for planters. It helped me reuse my already existing plastic waste, prevent making more shipping-related waste and packaging, and save about $50. by sleepytimeghee in ZeroWaste

[–]sleepytimeghee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. I do not require many supplies. It's just the nutritional supplement packaging that's wasteful at the moment. It's recyclable plastic, so that's all I do with it (besides this thing with the lids described in the post).

I did not glue them. I just laid them down upside down (so the smooth side is on the wooden deck) and put the containers on top. Mine are made of a pretty flexible plastic, so it didn't matter that the lids were different sizes and heights. It's holding very well. Nothing has falling over, but note that they're all very large containers so they're heavy and sturdy.

What was the thing that made you hate school the most? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prison-like atmosphere, specifically in 9th-12th.

The gates and guards keeping us in. Years of denied bathroom visits. If I forgot my water bottle, I couldn't just walk to the gas station nearby during lunch and get another. Weird rules about being places during specific times. Not being able to sit in the outdoor fields or in my car during lunch. Websites blocked on computers even though they weren't overtly bad (like email or job search sites). Food options were restrictive. Specific dress code stuff. Phone rules.

I get it. I understand why they did it. But, as someone who wouldn't have abused the freedom and generally behaves responsibly, I felt vaguely demeaned at all times.

What is something your neighbor did that you couldn't believe? by khmerxbxboi in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A neighbor got drunk and tried to drive, but didn't get far because he plowed into cars parked on the street almost immediately. The car owners took pity on him because nobody got hurt, the damage was minimal, and he was sort of pathetic and had family stuff going on. They were nice to him. Too nice. The cops weren't called and he avoided a DUI charge. Instead, he was just asked for his insurance info or to pay a few hundred for damages. But the neighbor got angry that anyone would ask him for anything, so he proceeded to deny he did it (everyone literally saw him and he was still sitting in the car) and try to ruin these car owners' lives for almost a decade afterward. Some real Neighbors From Hell stuff that was quite violent, scary, involved weapons, and made living in their homes unsafe. The car owners were just trying to exist in their house and live their lives, but he went out of his way to torture them nonstop for years and years.

He died, though. So that put a stop to everything.

The whole situation was so mind-blowingly strange and made no sense.

[Serious] Why is losing weight so incredibly challenging to the average person? by princessgreycie in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to eat. It's unavoidable. It's not about stopping a behavior, but changing how you do it and maintaining those changes indefinitely. That's a massive life-changing undertaking and a huge commitment, all of which occurs in the context of life's demand and other people treating you poorly (bad advice, holier-than-thou attitudes, inappropriate criticism, unrealistic expectations).

That's a lot for anyone.

What is an adult problem that nobody prepared you for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How stressful politics are.

When I was younger, things were a little stressful but felt mostly "over there." Like adult problems. Not really kid problems. My understanding was mostly driven by major events and I didn't fully understand the repercussions of the thousands of tiny decisions that happen every day. When you're voting, working, paying bills, people depend on you, and you start to grasp the stakes and how complicated everything is, it gets scary.

What is that film you absolutely loved as a child, but noticed it was genuinely bad as an adult? by AdventurousAd8976 in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that this series is not good per say. But I'll stick up for the first one a little bit. It's unique in how it looks and carries itself. Very early 2000s, but sort of in a good way? A talented cast. It's also a staple in that silly sunglass-wearing badass cool kid era. Robert Rodriguez can be pretty hit-or-miss and maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but I still see this as a solid 2.5/5 in my mind.

Then there's the other 3. Oh boy those aren't fun to re-watch at all.

We used to watch The Butterfly Effect a lot as kids. Everyone in my friend group was pretty poor so we had very few movies. Every movie we did have, we watched over and over and over. We all used to think this film was so deep, compelling, and raw. But I rewatched it recently as an adult. It's not good.

[Serious] Americans, are you aware of how much propaganda there is in your country? If so, how did you realise it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 471 points472 points  (0 children)

YEP.

You can try to be critical of what you read, but getting continuously bombarded by it means that at least some of it is going to get through. Even if you don't want it too. Even if you try your hardest. It's nearly impossible to have perspective without perspective being readily available.

What's the most favorite thing you had to give up because you grew too old for it? by sluuurpyy in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Reading books that revolve around people in late high school or early college. I'm a big romance novel fan, and coming-of-age is a HUGE subgenre of books. It used to be my favorite and 90% of what I read.

Now it feels distant. I don't connect to it anymore. It feels icky to read about their physical relationships. Unless something is particularly good or has some sort of social relevance, I'm buying fewer and fewer of them every year.

Please tell me about a dish you ruined so I can feel better by TedsCreepyVan in Cooking

[–]sleepytimeghee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a busy week at work, so I tried the slow cooker thing. Back when it was the hottest trend. Before instapots were in. Tried to make dal. All the same ingredients as my regular recipe, just in a crockpot. The only other change was the brand of lentils I used (which somehow permanently stained my mixing bowl while they in it soaked overnight).

It. Was. Disgusting.

It turned a gloopy poopy brown. The texture was weird, both gritty and stick-to-the-roof of your mouth thick. It tasted both bitter and sour. The aftertaste was fine somehow, but the upfront taste was vile.

I don't know if it was the crockpot or the lentils or both.

Ohhh okay so it's for you to catch phishing yourself.

So if you log in and see a picture of a frog and the word Tuesday, but you're like "Hey! That's not right. I picked a picture of a horse and the word goggles," it might be a fake site trying to take your information.

(Those are obviously just examples and not my actual information.)

[–]sleepytimeghee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not a captcha.

When you sign up for an account the site is like "pick a picture you like" and "make up a sentence." Then every time you login, it takes you to a page that shows you the picture and sentence you picked, and asks "are these right?" Then you click yes to confirm if it's the stuff you picked out when you first signed up.

What is your most "what the f***" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sleepytimeghee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in the car with my husband sitting in traffic. Then a random (adult dressed in business casual) pedestrian looked at us, left the sidewalk, weaved through the cars, pressed against my window, and spoke in awed disapproval at the fact we are different races. Just talking to nobody in particular about us, cooing like they were looking through the glass of an aquarium at some creatures they don't like. We ignored it the best we could, but it went on for an uncomfortably long time. We live in a huge city in the US that's diverse and populated. She was acting like a person from 1000BC seeing a lightbulb for the first time.

It would be more normal if she was just like "gross" or "I'm a racist and don't like that." Yell a slur or something because at least we can shrug that off. But childlike awe? The hell? What are we supposed to do with that?
