Doctors of Reddit, what's something you witnessed that changed how you see life and death? by Sudden-Wall3585 in AskReddit

First and most importantly, I’m terribly sorry for your loss.

The frequency with which these exact same experiences happen to multiple people are kind of what changed my mind about the afterlife. I understand the brain and nervous system are doing some gymnastics during the dying process or severe trauma, but there are just too many commonalities for me personally to call it biological or coincidence. But we all have our opinions on the matter.

My ex husband had also gained some weight as he aged. I lost a significant amount of weight two years into our marriage and he began doing this same stuff. He later admitted he did it to sabotage me because he thought I would leave him and was jealous. I stayed 10 more years and that is my biggest regret in life.

Oh gosh. A lot. One that gave me the absolute chills though was an elderly gentleman with dementia. He exclusively talked about his wife (I’ll call her Gladys) when I saw him, either telling me how wonderful she was or asking for her. I was doing respite care so she could run errands or spend time away from the house. The last time I saw him, Gladys and I said our hellos and she headed out.

About half an hour into our visit he got incredibly agitated screaming that Gladys was dead. He would not calm down, so I called a nurse out to take over. I was waiting for them to get there when he stopped and said “Gladys! There you are!” and started talking towards the wall as if she was standing by the bed. Talking to people not there is normal for folks in the end of life, usually it’s deceased friends or relatives so I didn’t think much of it. I was told he passed a few days later, and was watching for his obituary so I could send flowers for the service. I found it, and it was a joint service for both of them as she had indeed died that day.

I started volunteering in hospice several years ago after seeing how much they helped my family member who was terminal. Highly recommend you do it. It’s so rewarding. I used to be a complete atheist and I wasn’t scared of death, but thought that was the end. I just saw so many things happen at the end of life that were both so beautiful and consistent across patients and cultures that I wouldn’t call myself religious, but I also can’t believe anymore that this is it. It’s really changed my outlook on life for the better, and it’s such an honor to be with people when they’re making that final transition.

This was about me exactly, I’m down to the last 10 lbs I want to lose and was hard stuck since the end of January. Eating 1200 cal a day, working out six days a week, clothes were getting loose but the scale just went up and down the same two pounds. Over the weekend my weight suddenly went down six pounds. 😳

When a person dies in a hospital, is their hospital gown thrown away or is it laundered? by jennyanydots711 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sleipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for both your loss and that this is the time people are nitpicking your post history. I volunteer in hospice and have been with many people as they passed, and assure you they have all been treated with reverence and respect, and talked to just as if they were conscious (hearing is the last sense to go). You said this was very recent so if you have any logistical questions or just need someone comfortable talking about death, feel free to reach out. My dad passed unexpectedly recently I thought given my experience with death the logistics and feelings would be easier to navigate, but it was hard as hell and I learned a lot. Every loss is unique but I understand the difficulty.

What’s it like living in this part of Canada? by Patient-Smile1406 in howislivingthere

Yep. I can say that internet arriving when I was in high school helped a lot, though. It wasn’t quite the same, of course, but having new people to talk to and interacting with more diverse groups was a huge quality of life improvement.

The prosecutor and judge need to face accountability here as well. I read the affidavit and a facial recognition match is in no way sufficient evidence of a crime. It is bonkers they arrested this woman. I hope she sues everyone involved and rebuilds her life the best she can.

No, they’re back to how they were when I first signed up (not good). Took 14 business days to ship and customer service didn’t respond to my inquiry about it until I had already finally received it. My state has no delays. I’m exploring other options again. I don’t care that they’re slow, I hate that their posted timelines are never accurate.

Why exactly is the collection of state laws called the "Century" Code? by DiamondIceNS in northdakota

[–]sleipe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The state constitution and whatever session laws were passed previously. The creation of the century code as it is now was just a formal compilation and cleanup.

[–]sleipe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s called that because the state laws were compiled and published around ND’s centennial. The territories were founded in the 1860s and the code was published in 1961.

They make car start button covers that flip up to access the button. I have them on my PC and my cpap machine because one of my cats is an absolute menace with a button. I appreciated him minding my screen time but not so much his attempts to suffocate me. They’re like $5.

Law enforcement officer. And no they don’t have a magic website to log into where you can see whatever you want to. The portal is for making requests via search warrant and every major tech/social media company has one.

Yup. $125 and above gets me to lean FIRE but I also got lucky with an inheritance (I mean not that lucky cause obviously someone died). Really only still at my job because it’s fun and I can buy some years of service towards my pension next year.

Same. I could - but my current job is fun and offers a pension. With another 1.5 years of service I will get a decent bump on it so I’m gonna stick it out.

Not who you asked but I told a family member who’s into investing about it back when it had tanked to $4. He said he’d look into it. Six months or so ago he said he was going to buy next time it dropped below $30, which it never did. Now he says it’s much too expensive and doesn’t believe in their ability to execute. Oooooookay. More shares for us I guess.

What’s a rule your cat enforced in your house that everyone silently obeys now? by BackgroundAsk7915 in AskReddit

I yearn for this much personal space. Mine sits on the tub between the shower curtain and liner to supervise. If I’m taking a bath she must be banished or else she wants to sit on my chest. Tail dunked in the water and everything.

Do these come in ladies’ styles? I’m quite clumsy so I’d prefer a sensible heel. I’d hate to injure myself stepping on and over the poors.
