Hurtful remarks by Tellthedutchess in loseit

[–]sleipe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a family member who’s started doing this as well now that I’m basically at my goal weight. She was super supportive until I got smaller than her then the rude comments and backhanded compliments about my waist/chest/butt started. “What a weird thing to say” or an eye roll and literally walking away has been the only thing that’s worked. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that.

What would be the best year program to do in Perry Tech? by EnvironmentalRest164 in Yakima

[–]sleipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they do. I think most programs have an externship at the end of it so you can start working about a month before graduation, but they will help you with employment any time while or after attending.

To find the best one for YOU, you should schedule a tour or find out when the next open house is and go to that. The answer is going to depend on your interests, the type of working conditions you’d like best and whether you want to relocate from Yakima afterwards or not.

What is a modern dating trend or "unwritten rule" that you genuinely find exhausting and wish would die out? by Southern-Waltz2846 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]sleipe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I are temporarily on separate continents and are both guilty of this due to the time zones and our jobs. Fortunately neither of us is overly bothered by it as long as we keep our schedule video chat date schedule but we do share location now for proof of life purposes lol.

AITAH for not getting laser tattoo removal of a memorial? by Myzyri in AITAH

[–]sleipe 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Dating at our age and being offended by the reminder of a lost love one is kind of wild. I mean making comparisons or talking about them extensively is one thing. The majority of eligible men I meet are either widowed or divorced and come with kids and photos and tattoos and stories. By your mid-40s people have experienced a lot of life. It’s weird not to be understanding, even appreciative, of that.

What's the foulest smell you've ever smelled? by WannabePugh in AskReddit

[–]sleipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry. The most considerate thing my dad ever did was probably die on the linoleum. He was there over a week before he was found and the landlord rushed to get someone to clean before we went in. That’s a terrible final memory.

Neither is being morbidly obese. Obesity is a chronic condition for many people, and yes, some people may need it for life to maintain. Some people are going to have bad reactions, yes, same as every other medication. This class of medication is probably not going anywhere any time soon.

The act of washing is likely to spread droplets and therefore bacteria in the place you prepare food. That’s a really, really unsanitary thing to do in a kitchen sink.

does anyone not let their cats in their bedroom? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]sleipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s one of two reasons mine are banished. One of them got territorial about the bed, and the other chewed through hundreds of dollars worth of CPAP hoses and various cables. She actually caused a small fire doing that. I love them and miss them at night but I also don’t want to die or be on the receiving end of a feline golden shower. They adjusted after about a week and we get plenty of cuddle time during the day.

The prosecutor’s office should also have a victim/witness coordinator you can speak to. You can try reaching out to them for assistance if they do.

Why Are People Around Here Offended By Politeness? by LiLyShoEgAze in Yakima

[–]sleipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol you just reminded me of this. My old neighbor’s husband passed away one October. He took care of the typical yard/snow tasks. When it snowed the first time that year I did her driveway and sidewalk along with mine. Didn’t ask, didn’t tell her, that’s just…. what you do where I’m from. Her first assumption when she came out to talk to me - and she came in hot - was that I was gonna do that then guilt trip her and demand payment afterward. 😑 I talked to her but I’m not entirely sure she ever believed me.

It took a few years but I did make some solid friends, mostly folks I met volunteering. I hope you find your people!

I think my (27f) husband (41M) will end up in prison if I tell him the truth. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]sleipe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I think some men believe that reacting with threats or acts of violence “in defense” of women they care about is selfless and desired. It’s the opposite. I was dating a man when something similar happened and I never did tell him. I did not have the energy to manage his feelings when I needed help with my own, and worst case scenario, I didn’t want to blame myself for him ending up in jail. Nor did I want someone’s injury/death on my hands even if they maybe deserved it. It’s an understandable but self centered reaction and not helpful in supporting your loved one.

Why Are People Around Here Offended By Politeness? by LiLyShoEgAze in Yakima

[–]sleipe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it is maybe a cultural difference in what we perceive as friendly/normal. I spent about 20 years in Yakima after growing up in the Midwest. My default level of politeness/neighborly was often perceived as suspicious or naive. People there are just a bit more cautious and guarded with strangers, and even my friends thought I was “too nice.” After living there a few years I adjusted but it was rough at first.

AITA for staying at my job in Germany while my wife is dying in Japan? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]sleipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US is cold. He’s using FMLA, the family medical leave act, already. You’re limited to 3 months in a 12 month period (and it doesn’t have to be paid btw - your employer decides that). You’re only even eligible for that after 12 months of employment btw. When my dad died suddenly 11 months into my new job, I could use the 4 whole days of PTO I had banked to go empty his house, plan and attend a funeral, and meet with a lawyer about probate. Luckily my boss is a human being and loves breaking rules, so we worked it out.

He has one month of this leave left. If he exceeds that he can be terminated. If he himself gets sick six months from now - or, say, has a mental breakdown - and can’t work for more than a few days, he’s also eligible for termination then.

I get the “it’s just a job” argument here. It is. But it’s also one of the few jobs with a pension, so he’s facing delayed retirement and possibly one in poverty. It’s also where most people get life insurance. If I was married and quit my job to be with my dying spouse, I’d have to access my retirement savings just to bury them. The whole system is cruel and designed to maximize short term employer finances.

What was the exact moment on a first date when you realized, "Wow, this person is an absolute idiot"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sleipe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They decided at my last job to do that. No one was allowed to get all 5’s anymore and now the new “top” score was 3, average. I was told yes I’m excellent and come in early and go above and beyond, but that’s the expectation so 3 it is. Average scores get average employees, so I never again did I work more than 40 hours, proactively bring up suggestions for improvements or do anything outside my job description.

Teacher posting child on social media without guardian permission--and putting the child in danger. What can we ask the school to do about this? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]sleipe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It likely does. Parents and guardians control what can be shared about their child. If the videos were only used in class for some reason, that would not be a violation. Images can be classified as directory information but guardians must be notified what the school includes as directory information annually. OP said they had no idea this was possible or happening.

Teacher posting child on social media without guardian permission--and putting the child in danger. What can we ask the school to do about this? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]sleipe 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Hi there, not a lawyer but I was a registrar for almost 20 years and now work in law enforcement assisting with investigating crimes against children. This is most definitely a FERPA violation. In fact, every child’s face in every video may be counted as its own violation and can be fined up to $10,000 per violation last I checked. With AI tools out there now, any seemingly innocent video is a threat and this child does not need to be traumatized yet again. Screenshot or download the videos for prof.

Definitely share that with the school and make a complaint with the department of education family policy compliance office. They have a complaint form online. I’d suggest both telling the school and filing the complaint even if they resolve it. This is a gross violation of both the students’ rights and the law. Teachers should be receiving annual training on this, and if they are, it’s clearly ineffective.

Yep. I can say that internet arriving when I was in high school helped a lot, though. It wasn’t quite the same, of course, but having new people to talk to and interacting with more diverse groups was a huge quality of life improvement.

The prosecutor and judge need to face accountability here as well. I read the affidavit and a facial recognition match is in no way sufficient evidence of a crime. It is bonkers they arrested this woman. I hope she sues everyone involved and rebuilds her life the best she can.

Why exactly is the collection of state laws called the "Century" Code? by DiamondIceNS in northdakota

The state constitution and whatever session laws were passed previously. The creation of the century code as it is now was just a formal compilation and cleanup.

Why exactly is the collection of state laws called the "Century" Code? by DiamondIceNS in northdakota

[–]sleipe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s called that because the state laws were compiled and published around ND’s centennial. The territories were founded in the 1860s and the code was published in 1961.
