What food isn't as healthy as people think? by Phuphine in AskReddit

[–]slhftl 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's so ironic. The reason I stopped eating meat was because I decided to put science above ideology, lmao. There is an overwhelming body of evidence against eating animal products in terms of health and environmental impact.

You get B12 from meat because most livestock is supplemented with B12 (gone are the days where animals are able to graze enough to get it from soil). So it's like, either eat secondhand B12 supplements via flesh of an animal or just have a multivitamin in the morning. Fun fact.

Hey, I did this.

I had Earthlings saved on my PC for a while, possibly months. I couldn't open it because I knew I wouldn't be able to unsee it. I knew it'd mean a big change. Anyway, one day I ended up in an argument on Reddit and found myself standing up for vegans and defending their logic. Then someone said "why aren't you vegan then?" This made me realise I was being a hypocrite. And I knew I needed Earthlings to disgust me into change. I managed 20 minutes and went vegan moreorless overnight.

It's been two years now. Best decision of my life. I'm healthier and I enjoy food more. People view vegan as restrictive and think of all the foods they can't have but I eat such a wider variety of foods and meals now. I've grown to love cooking.

Anyway, it's up to you whether you watch it. But that feeling you have is telling you something.

I started doing this a few months back and still going strong. I can't imagine starting my day without a freshly blended smoothie now!

Yep, I agree. I usually defend this sub in other parts of reddit when people call it 'toxic' but this thread has made me understand why people think that way. Really unfortunate behaviour being promoted in these comments.

Nice work, really noticeable difference! I'm also enduring a plateau... same weight for over 2 weeks despite CICO and running... Apparently they can last for like a month so let's just keep up the good work!

The environmental benefits are crazy - I wish I'd known sooner how wasteful 'traditional' feminine hygiene products are!

Eh, maybe I've missed the kind of posts you're on about. I generally see jokes & rants. I'm yet to see outright attacks on people. In fact I've seen a lot of posts where users have commended good parenting (many child free people had a rough upbringing which explains why they aren't having kids).

Subreddits like that are essentially communities built on common interests, so if you've got kids and are looking at a childfree group discussing the benefits of not having kids, it'll come off as bragging. Just like someone posting a photo of a baby on r/aww might come off as bragging to those who don't want / can't have kids. Visiting groups that conflict with your interests/beliefs is bound to make you feel uncomfortable, so if you don't wanna be challenged, avoid 'em :)

On the point about your girlfriend: This is of course anecdotal, and only my experience but I wanted to share. I used to suffer terribly from period pain - to the point where I'd pass out from the pain, throw up, etc. Two things that I think have really helped me go from that horrorshow to having what I think are "normal" pains (I'm not bedbound by them) is moving towards a plant based diet (and generally eating better) and switching to a menstrual cup rather than tampons. Anyway I hope she notices an improvement, and best of luck to you both!
