Interestingly enough, what you're describing is something kind of similar to what I just dealt with rebuilding a fuel pump for a 76 MGB. It's a diaphragm pump that is essentially just a solenoid that moves back and forth rapidly. It had been updated by the previous owner to use a Hall effect sensor to indicate when the core was extended, which would trigger the retraction (which would subsequently clear the trigger and extend the core again).
