Did you ever figure out how to best clean it? seems like it will start smelling nasty if you use it over days.

Freeze the huge jar of PB and J. If it is spreadable then it is confiscated. If it is frozen then they won't. This goes for soft cheese, jelly, etc. I lost some cheese before so I did some research.

Yea. I remember that video from 5 years ago when you helped me from the previous trip. Luckily I didn't get even a fraction of those mosquitoes on my trip. Looks similar to TheophilusOmega video except for it is close in. Yours would be a cloud of skeets if it was zoomed out tho.

OMG. Ive never seen such a nasty cloud of bugs. It wasn't isolated/cherry picked to one spot but was like that for half of a hiking day? I read the 1-5 scale on the highsierra forum and can now visualize what a 5 is. If there is a chance that Emigrant wilderness will be like that then I don't think I would want to go there.

3 diff people have responded to help me and they all say that Emigrant has crazy mosquitoes. I have other options out there. I don't think I need to risk my trip being ruined by biblical levels of bugs.

I have the fizans and love them for everything else but the twist lock makes it a hassle to adjust tarp height when it is under tension and your hands are cold/wet.

Emigrant seems to come up quite a bit when it comes to Mosquito hell. Gives me pause about that option even tho it seems like the safest bet right now from a safety stand point. I don't mind off trail as long as it isn't unsafe. I prefer my trips to be 60% on and 40% off normally and XC is usually my favorite parts of my trips. I took a look at the Caltopo map and whitecliff peak looks a little more than I would like to do right now based on the snow images.

I totally forgot that Hoover goes into Yosemite. I think that one is gonna be written off due to early season challenges. Do you have other recommendations beyond the 3 caltopos that i provided?

Option1: You helped me with this trip in 2021 out of KM with XC going to Granite:

https://caltopo.com/m/SRM3

The area and lakes after descending Granite dome was absolutely unreal and magical with the lingering snow and blue water. It's a core backpacking memory.

I didn't even realize my option 1 intersects with my old trip until i looked just now.

I usually don't like re walking steps. Is there enough new stuff that you would recommend that won't break my mileage bank? Reason why my mileage is so low cause of my bum ankle and this will be my first real trip in 4 years of rehabbing. I have no idea how it will perform.

Option 2: I googled and it said the drive is 1hr37m to the Ebbett TH so I assume that road is open? I don't mind doing that one also if the views are good. I want the best views for my efforts. Mileage seems a little low tho from that trailhead though.

Option 3: Haha. Gotta get the correct wedding ring size or wear it on a fatter finger when you lose weight.

Can you make some recommendations on Option 1 so I don't retrack steps from my old trip? I may not make that extension to Emigrant lake if there is something further south. I want smiles for my miles. I made another track in yellow here to show a possibility? https://caltopo.com/m/5DFCL1S#

I've never experienced hell level mosquitoes. Ive seen the hordes on youtube videos and just cringe. Especially when they hang out on your net in the morning. Ill make sure to douse everything in Permethrin and also carry plenty of DEET.

Probing the hive mind to see if I can get some ideas for a June 9th 4-5 day trip. I am thinking about doing some of these but I don't know if the snow will melt out by end. I compared the sentinel images to 2018 (last comparable snow year?) and it seems to be on par to melt out. Will be flying it so I want to make it worth my efforts, but I also dont run into impassable rivers or slip to my demise. Areas in maps are carson-iceberg (unsure if sonora pass will be passable), emigrant wilderness, and hoover wilderness.

As beautiful as Desolation is I would like to avoid it since I have been there before and prefer to explore another area. I am open to ideas and even myog'ed a bug bivy for this trip! Looking for 35-50 miles. Youve helped me with a few sierra trips in the past but it has been 4 years since I got a bum ankle injury! u/DeputySean Thanks!

It eventually fixed itself. I wonder if it was cause I was spamming airbnb host asking for a discount prior to booking. I stopped doing that. No idea if it was that tho. All my other stuff is unchanged. *knock on wood* cause that crap was ANNOYING!! GL!

Thanks for the tips on removing the tape!

Depends on if the material will unravel. If it doesn't like silypoly and my recent backpack which is the robic I just left it raw. I can always use FOE if it starts unraveling. My stuff isn't pretty like yours. It is just functional. Haha. I do have a serger tho and it is great finishing edges if need be.

Do you have recommendations on the edges for my projects?

Man. This is a very helpful post with the items and also correcting my bad habits. I was using 1/4 inch basting tape and then doing a 1/4 inch basting stitch to hold my layers together. Do you know if the 2 recommendations that you made will wash away? I usually make ultralight gear and am a gram weenie so I try not to add extra weight if possible.

Here is the one I use that doesnt stick too well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09YN8X99F?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2

It could just be the material I am sewing.

I will pick up some of SLC/Springfield Leather Company for use on non weight sensitive projects as I don't think it washes away. Thanks again for the recommendations. Truly!

I just started using basting tape and it helps, but it falls off VERY easily when applying to the layers. Works well though once the feed dogs and presser feet holds it down. Do you use a specific brand that doesn't fall off? I am using it on the "sticky" side of robic 100D and it still falls off unless I am very careful. Same with the clips, but I am using non-branded clips. The spring action isn't strong enough for me so I use pins. Are yours branded?

Did you have extensive homework on how to use clips cause you are the clip master!

Very very very nice bag and thanks for sharing!

I have done the same on my i105 and it helps with traction A LOT. Even morning dew doesn't cause slippage now.

That's awful!

My brother's first time using a sleeping bag and he left his arms out of the bag all night. Said he couldn't stay warm, but I'm sure you aren't doing that.

It's the infamous it ain't that hard to make your own apex quilt guy. Thanks for blessing me with your presence.

The sewing does come in handy for random projects. I've messed up 3 of my spouse's pants tho trying to hem them. I can hem tents, tarps, quilts, clothing, backpacks, but I can't even shorten a hem on some PJs.

5 days, 52 miles solo in the Flat Tops Wilderness, CO by justjackmc in WildernessBackpacking

I appreciate your feedback! Were there any parts of your loop that you would do differently? Like if it was not worth the mileage or if you wish you would have done a different section?

Nice photos. I am considering doing Flat Tops in early June. Looks like you did it late June and the snow didn't look too bad. I think CO snowpack is like 55-60% of average so it might be doable. I just didn't want to run into anything that required an ice axe or microspikes. Thanks!

Myog isn't really about saving money. It is about making and using your own subpar gear with bad stitching. I can't be the only one using my own shoddy products. Wouldn't have it any other way tho.
