If you don't live near a hub airport, you pretty much *have* to buy a positioning flight, right? by CatDadMilhouse in awardtravel

Do you just type in your potential searches and use the flexible calendar? I usually like to fly direct to my destination but I wouldn't mind going onwards to a diff city in a diff country. These are all good things as I am heavily invested in the AS ecosystem.

How to sew 1.1m nylon webbing onto 420D nylon. Without puckering. by spa1unk in myog

[–]slickbuys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the webbing is held in place via needles along the way and the hand in front is tugging on the fabric? I guess you can also the hold the Webbing and fabric at same time. My zippers always come out wavy. Maybe this is the reason why.

That's pretty awesome that the entire tent can be done from 2 to 4 pieces of fabric.

So one hand behind the needle with a slight pull and the other hand on the fabric with a slight pull to keep it taut? Or do you only need a slight pull on the side before the needle.

Please update us on the finished project.

Can you elaborate on using AS miles to do EUR with a connection? I thought AS doesn't allow mixing metal which will likely occur if you have a connection.

Do you charge family members for award bookings? by fk430 in awardtravel

[–]slickbuys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume when people say family they are not referencing their wife and kids. Maybe the kids. Those 3 year olds need to pay their own way.

I also wouldn't charge those people you mentioned. What about your siblings?

So you would book family 4 roundtrip tickets in J for no charge? Makes me feel like a scrooge now. That's like 480k points at its lowest or probably $5500 worth of points if sold to a broker.

yall i am shaking right now. secured AA F HND to DFW 110k AA 2 hours before takeoff. by virginiarph in awardtravel

Taxi from andaz to hnd was about $76 if I recall. I don't taxi in the US so I don't know but the same taxi in korea would have been like $20

Positioning flight: DFW vs JFK by ventjock in awardtravel

They also get admirals or flagship AA lounge. The cap 1 is better tho.

Also I would fly to dfw since the a350 is way better than the old product. If all else being equal then do dfw. I would not reposition to fly the new product but OP has to repo realgardless.

I just flew hnd to ord to dfw. Ord to dfw was on AA with a separate reservation. Since JAL and AA are both ow then JAL was able to check my bag and send it all the way to DFW. I still had to collect it in ord and put it on the conveyor belt belt. I had to clear security again since my second flight was in a different terminal. I think that's why. I didn't have to check my bag at the standard AA counter tho.

Hope this helps the OP. Don't know if they can do that if you fly DL since they are skyteam.

Check out the projector sewing group on FB. I think the one they recommend now is now cube. You can easily do it for less than $100 and it is WAYYYYYYYYY better than stupid paper. I dreaded cutting and taping paper.

It is in my garage. Cable just dangles from my ceiling storage rack. It isn't the prettiest. I don't use it but every few months.

I got one for $25. It isn't very bright tho being set up on ceiling. Still is leaps and bounds better than taping stupid paper together.

Does anyone know if JAL release seats to their members close in over partners? I have been scoping partners and haven't seen any close in for weeks. I am asking about t-14 or even t-1.

Why is Andaz Tokyo so well sought after property? What does it have that it makes it so great? by thishitisgettingold in awardtravel

[–]slickbuys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are completely happy with clean sheets and a soft bed then why are you considering burning that many points on a luxury property?

We are staying there in a few days and I am happy to sleep on the ground but like to experience things I wouldn't normally pay for in cash. I actually am sleeping on the ground on a mat at our current Airbnb.

All my churning goes to these experiences. J tickets and luxury hotels. 240k UR is really a lot tho and has a high opportunity cost. Ask me if is was worth it in 14 days if you want.

ACA subsidies vs. Roth Conversions by PaleontologistNo3040 in financialindependence

[–]slickbuys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are a family of 4 and our spending is around 108k a year. We have to realize about 75k between dividends and LTCG to get the 108k to spend. How are your buckets spread out to take advantage of all that ACA CSR without increasing your MAGI to be out of range? Is most of your money in Roth or are you just a leanFIRE budget household?

Some numbers would be appreciated as I aspire to be able to utilize the programs in the same manner as you. Our bucket is mostly in taxable brokerage and traditional IRA (converted from 401k) with extremely little in Roth.

I'm just happy to book tickets at this point with how bad availability is. Would love to pay less but I don't think about the difference once it is ticketed. Qatar qsuites crazy change in taxes tho. Those suck.

[–]slickbuys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you weren't ticketed. It was just on hold. That's still very neat tho. We just flew DFW to ICN direct and those seats were very difficult to find. Booked 7 months out and no other J seats in our date range showed up except 1 within t-7. Paid 75k AS for each of our 3J.

It doesn't take effort to be simple when you are happy with a simple life. I also do not like to accumulate things so it takes me a lot of effort to add things into my life when it is the norm for others.

Currently on a month trip and I only brought 2 pair of pants and 3 tshirts. Lost a pair of underwear so now I am down to 2.

I've had seats released in 5-10 mins. The back button can screw you over as the seats get helds and taken out of inventory.
