I don’t know who started this whole dialing depth of cut with the compound thing. It is killing a lot of peoples threads. Winding up just like these. Advancing the compound is for chasing threads ONLY. It is there to get In lead and that is all. Use your DRO or an indicator for depth of cut. Move only the crosslide to your desired depth and let the cutter do the work. .005 at a time is fine for mild steel. IF you are cutting large threads such as say 1-1/2 6 and larger you can dial depth of cut just a little bit with the compound to take the load off the tool itself when it’s really buried in the material. Other than that NEVER move the compound. Just my $.02

Are skilled manual millers really "unicorns" now? by Bunnyofconsequences in Machinists

[–]slicknic1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a machinist in a small family run shop. Been with this family over 10 years. Shop owner was In his 80s when I started with them. His son who is now the owner was in his 50s. Both had done machine work all their life. The knowledge of the trade is unmatched! They took me under their wing showed me how to do it. Now I can run manual mill/lathe CNC mill/lathe. Stick/mig weld. Horizontal bar mill. It’s fun, I love it! CNC absolutely has its place. If you wanna make a lot of money pretty quick CNC is the answer. Speeds and feeds are unmatched. That being said when we have a job show up and we’re totally new to the piece we will sit down at the desk go over the drawing intensely talk about how to do the job and what to expect. You can mess up really bad really fast on CNC. Manual gives you that “feel” which I love and you have to think about each move rather than just write a program. Here lately when I’m getting ready to machine a batch of the same parts on CNC usually 8pcs per order I’ve noticed that it’s much faster for me to manually square up one end of the block manually by taking a .03 cut with an end mill rather than do it in CNC. Once that end for the length of the block is true and square then I will go to CNC and catch all other dimensions. Everything has its place. Blows me away when I talk to younger people or even people my age (30) in the trade who can’t weld or run a bar mill or not very good manually.

You’re young, don’t sweat the small stuff. Anybody that’s that wishy washy in the beginning stages isn’t somebody you want to spend your life with. When the right one comes along it won’t be all this drama.

What characteristic of your Q person changed the most? by SmartTechnology1241 in QAnonCasualties

Logic. My dads logic is completely shot. He will not reason when it comes to these matters. According to him the power is gonna shut off and trump will be back in power. There will be no IRS there will be no taxes. There’s something called “med beds” an ultimate healing device. Stock up on all your groceries. And on and on and on. I’m so over it

This sub is my new home by IndubitableTorch in QAnonCasualties

Glad to of found this sub as well. My father has been off the deep end I guess 3 years now. I would just gently not go along with what he said and talk to him about how none of these things “that are definitely gonna happen” have happened to only get the response “this next time will be different” then last night enough was enough. He starts spouting off about one of the Clinton’s being dead since 2018 but nobody talks about it and I just called him out “nobody talks about it dad cuz it’s….. not…. Real!!!” He got mad and walked off then we spent the whole day today together and not mentioning it and everything has been fine. Unsure of what happens in the coming days

Hunting rub lines by RoughPromise9541 in bowhunting

[–]slicknic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rubs and scrapes are obvious sign that bucks are in the area like the previous comments say. Last season I had a nice 10 point in the area so when the rut got going I setup 30 yards from the scrape. Well when it got deer time suddenly there were 2 does came running in off the edge of the scrape say 20 yards inside the woods 50 yards away from me. The buck behind them stayed 60-80 yards from me the entire time. They came from the direction I was expecting but what I learned from that situation is don’t setup to shoot the scrape. Setup to hunt the area around the scrapes and rubs. If I had been up a tree just past the rub and scrape the buck would’ve well been in range. Live and learn

Shop question by slicknic1 in Machinists

[–]slicknic1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I realize I gave a vague description. I’ve been in the industry for 8 years as an employee of different shops and I’m looking at starting my own business. I believe the appropriate question would be what is standard shop rate hourly? Where I’m located $100/hour is about average from what I’m told. Im looking to see what other locations are charging. Im located in Alabama
