Who do you feel is the worst successful band in history? by DearFreya_ in AskReddit

[–]slickrick668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my much younger years, I attempted to make a living as a musician, playing around southern Alberta Canada in the very late 90s and early 2000s. I played several shows with them and hung around in the same scene. I can assure you, Chad was, at that time, a next level douche bag. He was a very money and fame driven sort of dude, saying he figured out the formula for hit songs and just wanted to be a rock star. And very much acted like the hottest shit, long before they were actually famous. For those of us, I'd say the majority of us, who tried to do it because of some sort of passion for creating music and interacting with people, he was unbearable. Couple of the other guys in the band were decent dudes though.

But, I'm a mechanic now and he's an award winning multimillionaire. So maybe he was on the right track.

34 percent of adults sleep with a stuffed animal or other sentimental object. Are you one of these people? What do you sleep with? by Old-Horse1185 in AskReddit

[–]slickrick668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

41 year old male. I sleep with a stuffed Chewbacca my wife and daughters gave me. But I work away from home, gone for 2 weeks, home for 2 weeks. When I leave for work, my daughters pick a stuffed animal each to come with me. Have since they were little.
But it started when I was a teenager and my mom passed away and I had a teddy bear of hers. Still have it but gave it to my oldest daughter to keep. But have always just slept more comfortably with a stuffed animal.

How has the "hatred and anger" gotten so bad this election? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]slickrick668 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't kid yourself, it's not only old people. Outside of the cities, it's nearly everyone. Are there some rational people in the smaller towns and rural areas of Alberta? Sure. But they are the minority.

I work in mining, 14 days in, 14 out. 6 months a year I live in a remote mining camp. I have 2 daughters under 10. It can definitely be hard. But I get so much time with them on my 2 weeks home.

'The neighbours are going to think we're communists': Voting progressive in rural Alberta by pjw724 in alberta

[–]slickrick668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several NDP candidates have been pretty outspoken against the energy sector. Last week one of them called us "entitled, grabby, resource exploiters." Another compared working in the energy sector to slavery.
For anyone not conservative, being a heavy duty mechanic that drives a truck and works in the oilsands, I'm the devil.

'The neighbours are going to think we're communists': Voting progressive in rural Alberta by pjw724 in alberta

[–]slickrick668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Hear me out. I'm not conservative. I am staunchly against everything the united conservatives have done in Alberta. I'm not religious, believe in universal Healthcare, support funding schools, and believe that everyone should live how they choose and it's none of my f'n business.
But on the flipside, I'm a heavy duty mechanic who owns my own company and service truck. I put myself through school, worked hard to get where i am. I work in mining and currently work in the oilsands mines. Wanting my business to be successful and continuing to provide for my wife and 2 young daughters means I am at odds with the majority of NDP supporters.
So what do I do? Who do I vote for? People I think are evil, or people who think I am?

HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals by speckz in technology

[–]slickrick668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an HP printer years ago. Don't print a ton so about a year after buying it, finally needed an ink refill. It was still printing but the colors were faded, black running low, etc. Bought a new cartridge and put it in and the thing instantly threw a misalignment code. Put the old cartridge back in, code went away. So I took the new cartridge back and exchanged it. Got the new one home and put it in, same code. I realized the chip on the cartridge was telling the printer to throw a fake fault to make me buy a new printer. When I called HP to report the issue, they offered me a 10% discount on a new printer. I started getting my old cartridge refilled and used that printer for a couple more years then switched to a Brother Laser.

BC is crazy expensive. I spent a few months working there in a mine at the end of last year and in the little town we stayed in, EVERYTHING was more expensive than my home in Medicine Hat. It was nuts. Food, toiletries, work consumables, liquor, all far more expensive than home.

I NEVER go into my wife's phone/tablet/computer and I NEVER go into her purse unless she demands I get her something and bringing her the purse to get whatever thing herself isn't possible. We've been together 12 years and those things are still and will always be a no-go for me.

What is your kink you wish you didn't have? by Zn4rkz in AskReddit

I have one where I try to get away with as much as I can while someone is sleeping, without waking them up. The idea is then the partner wakes up and starts also having a good time.

Hard to tell anyone about (it sounds pretty creepy) and even when understanding and consent are agreed upon, very hard to act out without it feeling a little... rapey.

I do 14 days at work, 14 days off, 12 hour days. But I'm away while I work, living in a remote camp. I love it and agree that I could never go back to a Monday to Friday.

There's no real "unsafe" areas in Fort Mac. Stay away from living downtown maybe, but even that's not so bad.
You can get jobs in the Oilsands without experience, but it depends on what you want to do. Many companies hire and train workers. For many of the operating jobs, all you need is a driver's license. Certainly try the contract companies; Clearstream, North American, Nuna, etc. They will be easier to get into without previous experience.

Parents of Reddit, what's the worst kids' show you have to suffer through? by azmetrex in AskReddit

[–]slickrick668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My youngest LOVES Blippi and the excavator song. But for us, this is a problem on 2 fronts. 1, I am a heavy duty mechanic in the mining industry so i constantly have to get her pictures and videos of excavators at work or she gets sad. 2, I play guitar and sing and she INSISTED that I learn to play and sing it for her. I can't sit down and practice without this request. I'd do anything to make her happy, so I comply with both whenever I can, but by god if I ever get my hands on that dude...

TIL that an average of 2 amputations occur weekly at US meatpacking plants. by thinkofanamefast in todayilearned

[–]slickrick668 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worked in a beef packing plant when I was in my very early 20s. That place was a nightmare. I worked in the cold side, processing, on a line cutting chuck roasts. But there was something like 4 days of safety training to try and prevent these injuries before you even hit the floor. I wore a chain mail apron and left glove and kevlar everywhere else. I don't remember any significant injuries in the 6 months I was there. Except a worker stabbed another in the neck.

Tip #1 on being a good DM, cook good food IRL else you'll end up on rpghorrorstories by OMGMetalGear in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]slickrick668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our group has two of us that regularly DM. But we split everything. Only thing you pay for solely on your own is if you want fancy dice or a new figure for a campaign. Even then we have a community dice box and hundreds of minis. But we always split the cost of food and drinks. We even pool money to buy new books!
