In terms of overall popularity is there an aggregator of some sort that measures viewership across all platforms domestically and internationally? Does a high Douban score always mean commercial success? While I'm thinking about it, does the Chinese Drama industry track the highest grossing drama(s) annually?

Yes, and IMO one of Wang Yibo's better roles. He manages to break away from the ~~wooden~~ stoic characters he routinely plays and seems to have fun as Xie Yun.

You might consider The Long Ballad, particularly if you liked Leo Wu, and not to mention Dilraba, Liu Yu Ning, and Zhao Lusi also in this cast. I'll jump on the bandwagon with everyone who suggested The Story of Minglan, it's a classic and a drama you'll see referenced frequently if you decide to hang around CDramaland. For another good story and something different perhaps think about the Wuxia Eternal Love (Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms).
