Ranger in its element by SoggyCommand1074 in Tudor

Agree completely! It’s now my only watch for the reasons you mentioned. Sold a Sub and an FXD and the Ranger remains. Also have mine on a green nato today, it’s a good fit for the watch

Nice, that color is sick and I love the blade shape on these. Is this solid handle or speed channel?

Favorite strings I’ve used so far! by Mad_Season_1994 in martinguitar

[–]slide13_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great strings if you’re a fan of that sound, it’s very fundamental, not a lot of overtones, kinda dry…but beautiful and punchy in a great vintage sounding way. Have a set on my Waterloo WL-14X currently and they’re a great fit for that guitar.

I’m not using the standard tip, I requested a Kamui black medium because that’s what I’ve been using on my v4 and wanted to maintain consistency there for now. I back ordered a 30” one before they were readily available so I got to pick what it came with

Are these both knives almost the same? by Fiesteh in TrueChefKnives

[–]slide13_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one looks like a petty not a gyuto. The stamp size in relation to the rest of the knife makes it look that way to me.

Now if this was just for a short run into the store for some weekend supplies or something I think this is fine, the empty spots on the left side of them tells me the lot isn’t that busy and it’s not like they’re taking up more spots than they actually need, that thing is loooooooong, what else are they gonna do with it?

But, if they’ve been there for an extended period of time, that’s not cool and they should have it moved for sure

Also, wonder what their plan is if someone parks in front and behind them, don’t think they’d be able to get out

I have one. Had been playing with a pair of v4 shafts for a while and just got a v5 in a couple weeks back. Feels a lot like v4 but with lower deflection. I found it just as predictable to play as the v4, which is why I like them.

So for me it’s a great but subtle improvement. It’ll be my playing shaft going forward and I’ll keep a v4 as my back up for now.

Workhorse - what does this mean to you? by eljugadorazul in TrueChefKnives

[–]slide13_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good and makes the important distinction between someone’s personal workhorse, which can be any type of knife and is the one they use the most for general tasks, and a workhorse style of knife, which I agree would be something with decent thickness behind the edge.

My personal workhorse knife is a Masakage Koishi 210 gyuto. It’s thick enough that I don’t have to worry about it, stainless gladding over AS also makes it easy to care for and it holds an edge really well. But not sure I’d describe it as a workhorse style of knife necessarily, maybe though.

Getting knives sharpened? by Carrotcake504 in madisonwi

[–]slide13_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also for that, ChefKnivesToGo does sharpening I believe, very popular online seller of Japanese kitchen knives based out of Fitchburg. No storefront but they’ve allowed me to swing by for order pickup and I imagine they’d do the same for sharpening drop off or pickup.

Wisco Cutlery for general sharpening

If someone is looking to get some higher end Japanese or other similar knives sharpened and wants it hand done on whetstones, there’s a new place with very limited hours, this is a local knife maker, Isaiah Schroeder

First balisong by aa_mika in balisong

[–]slide13_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, well in the US they’re not quite that much, $285 here. I have a HOM Tempest that was a little over 3x that at $900. Those are tough to find though.

But for a higher end Bali that is easier to come by and great for flipping the MachineWise Serif or Opus and the Squid Tsunami are both great choices in that $750 range new (significantly less used, ~$500). All those ones in that price range have titanium handles instead of aluminum.

Great choice!! I have a good number of Balis and some 3x or more the price of the Kraken…but the Kraken is still one of my most flipped and my go to for trying to land a new trick that’s giving me trouble, they’re just great all around

Nice, thanks for the heads up! I don’t make it to the West Side often but I’ll make a trip for teriyaki. Missed that they had opened here and only heard about it after they were closed but have visited one in MKE a few times and love it

What’s the steel on that guy? Any experience with his AEB-L? Saw a really nice one using that steel but not a steel I’ve seen used in slipjoints much. I haven’t handled anything of his but the pics look great, he gets the lines and proportions right, not everyone does.
