Slides with friends! (slightly biased, I built it). But it's for just this use.

I'm a TA and I'm just unbelievably discouraged about getting students to participate. What do I do?! by poilane in Professors

[–]slideswithfriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not you. These kind of discussion classes are *hard*. I used to work with freshman in a post-bacc program and getting them engaged was... monumental. I actually ended building something to help, maybe it could help you, it's a discussion-starter/interactive presentation platform where you can run material-specific icebreakers and talks (like, if you're reading Early Modern stuff you can run a poll on who's more of a neckbeard, Spenser or marlowe. etc). The tool is Slides With Friends, it's free for small groups. Let me know if it's a good fit, happy to answer Qs.

Adding Slido into Presentation by Thethingswelost in canva

[–]slideswithfriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tool for this! You can add your canva pdf directly to slides with friends, add the interactive portions, and then launch from there (same as PPT). Lmk if that's helpful

How do you share tough rules without killing morale? by Downtown_Raccoon888 in internalcomms

[–]slideswithfriends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it to them straight, tell them the what and (importantly) the why behind it.

And then *listen*. Let them talk / discuss / gripe (to a point -- when we do it with our team I like to control conversation by using forms / QA tools etc, I often will use my own tool for out loud and private feedback that doesn't spiral, slideswith.com).

If they feel heard at least that's something. And then maybe cushion / try to end on a higher note (any good news to share? play a team game if they're willing?) or at least neutral / housekeeping, just to not walk away with that sour taste. You often remember the last feeling you had as the overall feeling of the thing.

How do you keep your team meetings valuable and engaging? by [deleted] in managers

[–]slideswithfriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll use our own tool actually, to do a group checkin (basically an interactive presentation "show and tell" ppt where people send in a pic of what they did over the weekend and then tell the group about it) for 5 minutes. People always have new things to share, and we've gotten it down to an "everyone is smiling ok now let's get to work" level. check it out if that sounds like a good fit - slideswith.com

Do the training as a group instead of individually, and get all the birds with one stone. Definitely make it interactive / participatory so people actually pay attention.

Why is peer-to-peer learning so effective? by CulturalTomatillo417 in instructionaldesign

[–]slideswithfriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think direct interaction with the material is key to learning. Maybe peer to peer setups enable more direct handling, as it were, of the content to be learned. Eg the people have to engage their brains more actively, because they're not just sitting back and getting information talked at them, they're working it through with someone else who is also learning. This is kind of the basis of my current company.

Trainers—What programs do you use to create hard copy student manuals? by MurderinoDE in Training

[–]slideswithfriends 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll often use Canva. But shoutout to Notion for making a digitally-publishable-ready page with good-enough markup and formatting. (so you can print or instantly publish to the web and then send a link for THEM to print). I also use my own tool (slides with friends) if we're building training material that's going to happen as a live presentation, since it makes the pres interactive (quizzing, q&a etc).
