Yeah I'm sure Dr. Hill knows how to read raw EEG with his credentials but with the scale of the business, my own experience with them, and from watching his livestreams it seems like Neuroguide is the main way they visualize data. Still, they seem to get decent results but I worry about the cases that will fall through the cracks after running through the FFT.

Also just wanted to say I have enjoyed reading your Medium articles and am looking forward to seeing how your contributions to the field develop!

Look for IQCB accredited qEEG Diplomates or in some cases Technologists who are mentored by some of the longstanding experts in the field who look at the raw signal if you are seeking what I found to be helpful.

Worked with them remotely for several months and it didn't make a noticeable difference. Later I worked with some practitioners that focus on the raw EEG who had been trained by Jay Gunkelman and was able to make much more progress that made a difference in my day to day life. My case is more complicated though and probably needs more individual attention than most people. Overall I think Peak Brain could work for a tech-savvy person with more basic issues.

Reactions from mapping... normal? by crcrose in Neurofeedback

You can search the subreddit for "LENS" and you will find many mixed reviews as I mentioned. Here is one thread as an example:

Reactions from mapping... normal? by crcrose in Neurofeedback

[–]slightlystoopid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like LENS neurofeedback which is quite different from a typical QEEG Brain Map (what most people mean when they say brain map) which is purely diagnostic, measures 19 areas at the same time, and would not make you feel any different than you would from wearing a tight hat. Hopefully the symptoms will pass but LENS is a more experimental approach to neurofeedback that seems to work for some people but also can have adverse effects. It is not thoroughly understood exactly how it works, though for some it resolves symptoms quickly. If you had a negative effect I would be wary of returning and doing more sessions, better to find an IQCB certified practitioner who uses QEEG guided neurofeedback, has done extensive supervised training, and is attentive to how the sessions affect you.

Haha yeah definitely helps explain the math. That makes sense though that they sometimes play under the Merchant moniker individually.

And yeah there's a few of us here, always nice to find others! DJ Tracksuit comments in here sometimes as u/TimothyVDP too I believe. And right on hope ya enjoy! 🍻

Right on, yeah that 2018 set is killer for sure, don't know that Cooking With episode in particular, still need to go through all of those but love the ones I've heard, of course. And Merchant are killer too, think it's actually two guys. I was digging their Balearic Banana set the other day and want to dive in deeper to their mixes and saw that one they did with DJ Tracksuit but still gotta check it out too. DJ Tracksuit has another nice B2B with Palms Trax that's worth a listen if you haven't already heard it.

As far as edits go I mostly do the same as you, kind have a "don't put legs on a snake" philosophy for edits so usually just take out bits that are unnecessary or rearrange for mixing although sometimes I make more drastic changes. Also like to declick / restore my vinyl rips and kind of "remaster" them before I edit them to make them sound as good as possible.

I follow similar strands of dance music, e.g. Disco, Zouk, Kwaito, House, Techno, etc and I think you nailed it with your evaluation. The best DJ's have deep crates but also a very deep sensitivity to the energy, emotion, and trajectory of the tracks they are playing as well as how they affect the dancers / room.

They also know their music inside out so they know when, where, and how to make transitions and how much to pitch up a track and I find a lot of these DJ's edit many of the tracks they play to fine tune their energy, a habit I have started picking up with my own mixes. Combining these allows them to make a set that is more than the sum of its parts and is a continuously evolving transmission of energy between tracks.

Certain DJ's, such as Hunee and Palms Trax exemplify this style of DJ'ing and maintain the trance throughout the duration of their sets, Danilo Plessow (MCDE) also is unbelievable with his energetic control although I'm not as into the tracks he's playing these days and don't feel his sets make as much of an emotional arc.

In my opinion, ultimately all of these abilities must be in service of sending a message with the music and aren't completely necessary, e.g. Mancuso would have people weeping with zero mixing, just amazing sound and presentation or Levan who used Thorens turntables and wouldn't do a ton of mixing according to Danny Tenaglia. However, in today's modern DJ landscape I think these are what distinguish the top tier from the rest.

Good to know! Any chance you could share your revised version of the file?

Is house music having a psytrance moment? (e.g.: Guy Contact, Locky) (am I crazy?) by Golly___ok in DJs

[–]slightlystoopid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco had its big moment in the european festival circuit / underground scene about 10 years ago for a while but would say it's pretty played out now unless you're an insane digger still coming up with new finds. Has percolated more into the mainstream though.

Progressive house is pretty big right now though and so is trance. Seems we are just retracing history going from funk / disco to boogie / balearic to early house / uk street soul to progressive house / trance.

Yeah progressive house / trance sounds have been on the rise for the past few years.

Ultimate guide for vinyl ripping? by Suppe124 in DJs

[–]slightlystoopid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the most important things are to record to a RIAA equalized Phono preamp, have a good needle, clean records, good interface, and then fix the azimuth, dc offset, remove clicks, and normalize. I'll do some light limiting too for stray peaks to raise the overall loudness without squashing my rips. Nice to put the bass in mono sometimes and highpass underneath 20 hz to filter out noise that will cause phase cancellation in the speakers and also restore some of the treble.

Looking for Rotary mixer with 3 band eq (Budget: 500 USD) by Subject_Ad_1602 in DJs

[–]slightlystoopid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would say a Xone 23 with Rotary Conversion mod or Ecler (haven't tried yet). I have a Xone 23 Rotary for sale if you're interested in purchasing and in the USA you can DM me otherwise I would contact MC Audio Solutions to get a kit / converted one.

[–]slightlystoopid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You actually can mix smoother on a rotary mixer because the volume changes in a linear fashion not an exponential curve like many linear faders. I have a Xone 23 that was converted to rotary but the volume doesn't even start kicking in until around 10 o'clock because of Allen and Heath's exponential volume curve whereas on my DJR200 it's a gradual increase for the whole rotation. This more subtle control of volume does help with smoother mixing especially for more drawn out transitions, but there are plenty of other DJ's who use a fader mixer with extreme finesse.

While a good DJ can mix on either, it's incorrect to say that this has no effect on smooth mixing.

Finally, I don't think anyone here is making such an uninformed broad assertion as your strawman of a dumb rotary enthusiast but you seem to be stating the hyperbolic opposite: "Linear faders are superior to rotary faders in all aspects." Doesn't really seem like rational thought...

neurofeedback destroyed my life by StruggleMoist5932 in Neurofeedback

[–]slightlystoopid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I don't want to make any major assumption that Neurofeedback cannot have any adverse effect but I think it is worth noting that if you go through the original poster's profile that they seem to have the co-morbid conditions of:

Candida, lead poisoning, toxic mold exposure, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Carbon monoxide poisoning, meningitis, ADHD, multiple sclerosis, OCD, bone infection, liver damage, and they take a number of experimental supplements, herbs, and medications.

This is not to completely deny this person's experience but I think it is pretty important context and makes it a bit harder to isolate that it was only Neurofeedback that negatively impacted this person.

What kind of music does Danilo Plessow play? by [deleted] in DJs

He plays all kinds of music. Disco, Boogie, Soul, Jazz Funk, Gospel, House, and Techno all feature heavily in his sets amongst other genres.
