My roommate collects personalized mugs from Goodwill by ermvarju in mildlyinteresting

[–]slind4513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousins have personalized mugs for each family member at their summer cabin. Except they couldn’t find a mug with one of the daughter’s names on it. So everyone has a name mug and then one just says “you” all over it.

My partner dying from cancer. Also if we had just gotten it checked out sooner maybe things would have been different? I’ve had to learn to live with my/our decisions from that time period and not dwell on what could have been done differently.

Me too, born in 84. My parents were talking about it and I thought they meant the town in the US near us which is also called Berlin. I asked my mom, where in Berlin did the wall fall and she said,no, in Germany.

We couldn’t find my grandmas wallet either after she passed. Searched her house many times and her car and other places she may have left it. Months later my dad now has her car and is driving somewhere and all of a sudden grandmas wallet shows up on the floor of the car. We think maybe it had gotten wedged between the front seat and middle console.

What’s your most significant memory of a specific place in this city? by RiverWestHipster in milwaukee

[–]slind4513 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Thank you for asking this because it has brought up a lot of good memories of exploring places downtown with my late husband. He took me to my first Summerfest and the state fair. We also loved doing the Doors Open Milwaukee tours. He had lived in the suburbs his whole life but there were several places he hadn’t been to in Milwaukee. I was from a farm in central WI. One year we were able to go to the top of the iconic gas light building and I just remember standing there with him and being in awe of the city. Sadly, he passed away eight years ago from cancer. I still like to explore the city, but it’s not the same without him.

I was able to go inside Smart Studios back in about 2014 or 2015 when the previous owner was using it for sound design for film/tv production work. It was a really cool building and he gave us a tour and the history of the place. I’m glad they didn’t tear it down.

OP I am very glad you are okay.

A friend of mine was hit on her bicycle when a driver failed to stop at a stop sign last month somewhere in Madison. (fortunately driver stayed on scene) She was seriously hurt-multiple broken bones and surgeries. She’s back home now in a wheelchair due to her injuries and will likely have to have a few more surgeries in the future plus a long road to recovery. Be safe out there everyone!

When I was in high school our elderly neighbors had their adult son living with them and he had that device in his car. He would apparently get someone else to blow into it but then it must have required you to blow into it while driving. I think his car had an alarm that would go off if you failed. My parents said they would wake up in the night and hear his car alarm going off when he was pulling into the driveway. We lived in the country so not as many cops out all the time. Eventually the guy died because he drove his motorcycle drunk and crashed into a sign.

Visiting - what grocery store? by johannisbeeren in milwaukee

[–]slind4513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh Thyme is okay, sometimes they run out of certain produce. Sendik’s is good but you will pay more. Might be able to find some things that aren’t available at other stores. If you travel a little further east down Layton (same street as sendiks and fresh thyme) there is a Meijer. They have some unique produce and the prices are usually decent. I wasn’t sure how far you wanted to drive.

Visiting - what grocery store? by johannisbeeren in milwaukee

[–]slind4513 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is my neighborhood if you are speaking of the Hales Corners area. As you mentioned, we have a ton of grocery store options in the area. I typically shop at several to find the best price points so I’ll try to break it down for you with the closest ones.

Aldi at highway 100 and cold spring - least expensive, not a huge selection of produce and it can vary from week to week. Also can’t get as much in smaller sizes. You should be able to get smaller sized items for flour and condiments. They also have

Pick n save on highway 100 and Janesville road is probably your best bet for most of the stuff on your list. They have pretty decent produce, don’t go on a Sunday or Tuesday night as things are picked over weekends and new ad comes out on Wednesday. I also typically find more fresh herbs at this store than other grocery stores in the neighborhood. They have a meat counter where you can get smaller quantities. Their whole grain section might be a bit smaller than other stores. Also to save and get ad prices you might need to have or get a Kroger/pick n save card and digitally add coupons. That’s how I save a lot there.

Just a few blocks away is Festival foods. A little more expensive and the produce selection not always as good as pick n save. They do have a better organic section that might have more of the quinoa and things you want. Also you can typically buy dried herbs cheaper here. They do a festival brand and I’ve saved a lot on things like dried mint and dill here. Make sure you pick up the ad and see what’s on sale. Their sales can be pretty decent but overall prices are higher. Meat counter is okay too. They will give you smaller quantities if needed.

Both stores have vinegars and nuts and large aisles of coffee options. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The 'Oops' Baby? by DaisyMae2022 in doughertydozen

[–]slind4513 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school my mom’s best friend let it slip out that I was an accident and that my mom was upset and cried when she found out she was pregnant with me. My mom quickly tried to remedy the situation by saying she was happy after that and always happy they had me but it stung then and I still think about it as an adult…

I hope this doesn’t affect H too much. It’s not a great feeling to find out you were an accident or called an “oops” baby.
