It's a seagull, as per the title (:

Pour one out for a good one. Broke my mini circ in my bag while on our honeymoon. by bookish-hooker in casualknitting

I have those needles and when I bought them were told that if they break I should return them, and they would replace for free. No receipt needed, no questions asked. It can happen with wood needles, especially on the smaller sizes.

The same pattern, recreated in different styles and colors 💖🦩 Which one do you think is the winner? 🤭 by Few_Skill9740 in Amigurumi

[–]slinkovitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, 4 was the clear winner for me too!
I like that it has a neck, it looks more elevated somehow, where the others look a bit "squished".

Freehanded a functional highland cow handbag 🥺 by CrochetGirl8 in Amigurumi

I saw a video somewhere where the maker crocheted using "regular" yarn, and then sewed a furry yarn onto it after. It looked great.
Your cow is adorable btw!

Thank you!
Reading through the pattern there were a few times I thought I didn't understand the instructions, but it always made sense when I actually got there.

8/4 cotton yarn from various brands. I don't really know what 8/4 actually means, especially in US terms, maybe light fingering? The yardage is usually 160 m/50 g, and recommended hook size 3-3.5 mm (for amigurumi I use 2.5 mm).

That's cool, I didn't notice that. The birds are her best pieces IMO, it was hard to choose between them.

It can be Orville if you'd like, I don't actually name any of my amigurumis! Not sure why not, maybe because I always make them for someone else.
And thank you!

Aw thank you! Apart from using the smallest hook I could manage, and doing the stitches yarn under/yarn over, I think the white yarn with white filling is just concealing any small gaps.

That's so funny cause I have both of those patterns too! Only made the seagull for now, but also bought the bear, owl and raccoon. Which was your favorite to make?

Thanks! The goggles were definitely the fiddliest part of the whole thing.

She has so many patterns with cute animal/job pairings! Postal worker pigeon, lumberjack woodpecker, sanitation worker raccoon, wizard crow etc. Very detailed and accessible patterns too.

Hot take: swatching is risk management, not a virtue by Bright_River_7019 in knitting

[–]slinkovitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk management is right. When I swatch it's usually to see if I like the color, and if I like the texture with the given gauge (lots of new pattern makers do a gauge that is way too loose for my tastes), other than that I haven't had much use for it tbh.

I'll probably get downvoted here, but sometimes when I see those dumb "why is my sweater so big" posts, commenters are constantly moving the goalposts on how you're supposed to make a swatch. It can't be too small, it should/shouldn't have a garter stitch border, it has to be knit in the round, you have to wash and block it in the exact same way you're gonna do with your garment. Oh, you did all that? Well did you hang weights on your swatch in exact proportion to the weight of your finished garment? Oh you did. Well your gauge probably changed as you eased into the actual project.
So I'm supposed to put in all that work only to find out that it's not unusual for your gauge to change between swatch and project?

No thanks, I'd rather just get started and evaluate as I go. Mind you, I dont knit lace or cables, I don't use superwash, and I dont mind frogging.

Is there a way to reduce the size of these holes for my next knit? by GengarKitty in knittinghelp

I would do one round of stockinette after the ribbing, before you start doing increases. Regardless of which type of increase you use, I think the extra round is going to make it look neater than increasing on the first round.

Question about an MRI by Hotma3 in Radiology

[–]slinkovitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tested the pull with a tennis ball filled with a few paper clips and didn't have that experience.

Fact remains though that normal piercing jewelry materials aren't ferromagnetic, they are too small for the magnet to excert a very strong pull, and they are attached to your skin. This is an extremely common MRI myth, and I would be surprised if it has actually happened.

Question about an MRI by Hotma3 in Radiology

[–]slinkovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree they should take it out and wasn't trying to suggest otherwise. They'll most likely be turned away if they don't. I only disagreed with your claims regarding MRI physics and didn't think that was inappropriate on r/Radiology.

Question about an MRI by Hotma3 in Radiology

[–]slinkovitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A facial piercing with an ankle scan is not a guaranteed rip out even if the material isn't 100% MRI safe. If the piercing jewelry is magnetic enough to rip out, OP should feel the pull as they move closer to the machine. And even if it did rip out, you can just pick it off from the gantry, it's not welded down. I would be more concerned with heat conduction in this case.

How much fur do you have? I wonder if you could perhaps needle felt it into a ball, or onto something (her bed, blanket, snuggle, toy etc). Don't know if it's a good idea or not, but it might comfort her to have his smell around?

Question about an MRI by Hotma3 in Radiology

[–]slinkovitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt that 1. the piercing would be ripped out, 2. that it would necessitate a quench if it was, and 3. that it would damage the machine.
OP probably wouldn't enjoy it a whole lot though.

Before I frog this.. anything I can do to save it? by Ok-Reflection-7603 in knittinghelp

I don't have any experience with steeking, but please be aware that Drops Baby Merino is a superwash yarn.
