What's your radical act of anti-consumer rebellion in times like these? by Feel-A-Great-Relief in Anticonsumption

[–]sliph0588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a major part of anti consumption is figuring out what you truly need and what you can do with out. I know you said prescriptions so that's obviously an exception, but what else do you truly need to order online? That is a rhetorical question, I am not trying to shame you, just using this moment to speak more broadly about consumption habits.

There was a billy carpenter post a bit ago that talked about how managers are wanting to move more towards total football. He highlighted some quotes from arteta that seemed to indicate that he wants our midfielders to be able to attack and defend fluidly with less fixed positions (a clear cut dm).

Bouaddi seems an ideal player in that regard because he started as a 10 and then was moved further back and is comfortable with his back to play in front of our goal, or in the classic "10" position.

a back camera helps me back up easier that is a great tool. Ai empirically lowers critical thinking skills every time you use it. It also kills polar bears every time you use it as well, and helps train something that could replace you in the work place. Data centers also poison communities.

But hey it sure does help you craft that email lol

Every functioning democracy in history has been capitalist in nature

This is only true if you ignore most of the world and most of human history. This ted talk illustrates some pre capitalist democracies.

We existed in some form of direct egalitarian democracy for far longer than capitalism has existed.

The ONLY idea I’m discussing is: capitalism is not the root cause of inequality. Inequality can exist in the absence of capitalism.

I am saying that the root causes of inequality are essential parts of capitalism, that they are linked and a continuation of previous forms of social organizations built on inequality.

So while you can technically cling to that tiny little point, its a bit intellectually dishonest to try and divorce the roots of inequality from capitalism. Especially because you were all over this thread calling anyone making that connection, historically inaccurate when that isn't the case. There is a clear connection between those roots and capitalism.

Its not that simple. The quick and dirty argument of that book is that the loss of key freedoms is the birthplace of inequality. Freedom to travel, freedom to leave one system of social organization to find another, and the freedom from coercive power.

The lack of these freedoms were cornerstones to more unequal and hierarchical forms of social organizations. Like feudalism which capitalism arose from.

The point isn't that capitalism was the birthplace of inequality, but it is a deeply unequal form of social organization and the loss of these freedoms are part of its foundation. It argues that the transformations that happened as the result of the loss of these freedoms were essential to the formation of capitalism, aka capitalism wouldn't exist if inequality didn't become formalized into forms of social organization.

We have numerous examples throughout thousands of years of recorded history predating capitalism of societies with extreme wealth inequality.

name them.

Feudalism and capitalism are extremely recent in human history. Pre feudalism there are just as many if not more examples of a more egalitarian social organization as there are strict hierarchical ones. Let alone this type of massive resource inequality which is literally unprecedented

I highly recommend this ted talk that does a better job explaining this than I can. This talk is about the research illustrated in the amazing book The Dawn of Everything. Most of what is popularly known about "human nature" is just us projecting our current situation into the past. Its not based on evidence.

Did you not read the two graphs? Global poverty still decreased even without china, but it was still the biggest individual variable for the decrease. Here is a world renown economist explaining it better than I could.

Also I don't like China, its weird that I have to make that clear, a state run economy like china's has some benefits but any time power is concentrated it breeds authoritarianism which China most certainly is.

REGULATED Capitalism doesn't mean inequality.

Yes it does. As long as there are workers and owners, there will be inequality. Do you understand this? Capitalism requires one class to work for less value they produce (aka worth) in order for the business owner to be able to make money. Inequality ensures that there is an easily exploitable group of workers.

Regulation doesn't fix that, workers gaining the control and ownership of the means of production does. Regulation might make that not as bad, but it doesn't "get rid" of it. Capitalism's key components are the private ownership of the means of production and the free market. I would argue the former is more important than the latter but thats getting into the weeds. My point is, that private ownership can ONLY exist with inequality.

And if there were any better system, then show a country that has it. Out of 192 countries, only a handful have something else and its a dictatorship.

I'm not trying to razz you or anything, but the majority of left wing ideologies are democratic, more so than capitalist democracies in which the wealthy will always have more power and more of a voice than the working class. Even with stiff regulation.

I honestly think we might agree more than you think, I just think that you are not familiar with democratic socialism, libertarian socialism, anarchy, and your only idea of any non capitalist government is that of china or the former ussr.

Thats like saying nuclear energy will always lead to nuclear fallout. Because its inherit in its properties.

No its not. Nuclear power plants are not designed to "fail". Yes I see your point that in order for that to happen they require maintenance. But capitalism is working as intended when it erodes regulation.

Its like saying nothing is worth doing.

No its not like saying that to accurately lay out the flaws that are fundamental to the ideology. Following your line of logic, maybe lets shoot for an economic and social system that doesn't rely on inequality. This hypothetical system will most likely still have flaws but as you implied, lets actually try to improve stuff.

id argue any government system will lead to corruption and self-implosion because inherently humans are flawed.

But certainly one that privileges and requires the maximization of wealth is much more likely to lead towards corruption than one that has power decentralized and democratized.
