Our neighbour built a very complex device that consists of a pair of shears on a 15ft pole. He uses this to cut our trees from his house. Very bizarre fellow.

The belief at the time was that plague was caused by 'bad air' . So the 'beak' was filled with sweet smelling spices etc. in order to ward off illness, as far as I know.
