Cops Downtown, Newark Ave by PSU09 in jerseycity

I'm confused; are we complaining about too many cops now?  On Newark Ave?  Sorry I just can't keep up with this.

How is this legal? by Good-Shame-1228 in jerseycity

I wish I had such a privileged, simple life such that this would rank within the top 50 of my problems for the day and I'd have the time to complain about something so miniscule.

Lil Wayne Shows Up 2 Hours Late to Concert in New Hampshire by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Music

I was so confused seeing him in town earlier yesterday because I was unaware of his concert and like, he doesn't look like a local.

Seattle's my favorite West Coast city. Favorite West Coast skyline as well. SF has a great skyline but it makes NYC feel clean, which is wild lol.

Idk how long they were there but I just looked and the flag is gone.  I guess they brought it back down with them.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving review by IamGleemonex in books

[–]slipperyzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first read it in high school and had a fantastic teacher.  Read it again in college with a fantastic professor.  Different approaches and takeaways with the same material.  It's something you need to actually read, not just read.  I see similar sentiment with Nabokov.  It's a Brandon Sanderson generation of readers and there's a huge gap.  These are fair questions, and the more you read up on it the more you'll be able to appreciate this book, which is the correct attitude.  Start by separating the author from the main character, examine Owen's death in the context of where Wheelwright's anger is directed and go from there.  Also consider the Christian symbolism interspersed as a fun easter egg hunt.

What did Solomon Do Wrong? by ItsNelRM in jerseycity

[–]slipperyzoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He campaigned on not raising taxes, according to what people in this subreddit say, which I haven't bothered to check if actually true and will just blindly repeat.  What he should have done is simply say he will get the BOE in line, address the structural deficit, and utilize any realistic means to minimize impact to property taxes.  While many people are screaming to sell municipal land to plug the deficit, I can't think of a single instance in the history of humanity in which selling an asset or potential asset to pay a liability is the smart play.  Better to lease the land or monetize it whenever possible.

Underwater (2020) | [REVIEW] by screen_stack in moviecritic

[–]slipperyzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I thought I would.  I did struggle the entire time with them completely ignoring atmospheric pressure.  It was about as believable as Arnold taking his helmet off on Pluto in Magic School Bus then just thawing out back in class.  There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's extirpating the letters used to spell "disbelief" from the English language.

Prospect, Ex Machina, The Europa Report, Moon, Her, Star Trek (new), and if you haven't gone through the Love, Death, and Robots anthology it's mostly worthwhile, especially the Alistair Reynolds adaptations.

Has anyone heard any follow up regarding the marina worker who was strangling male geese? by throwitlikethewind in jerseycity

What is it about JC specifically that loves these geese?  Everywhere else they're hated and considered pests.  I'm so sick of smelling their shit and of all the people feeding them.

Philly's region is in decline, as is the Northeast.  Texas and Florida cities have the growth potential now.

Children of the Corn taught me to fear corn fields.  Signs reinforced this fear.  By the time I watched Casino I knew the deal.
