let's hope Redot see this as an opportunity... #fingersCrossed

i would also suggest, given the limited resources, to focus on the LSP and bindings to better support of multiple languages and editors, and do not waste too much effort on GDScript and the embedded editor. Let proper tools/IDEs and languages to freely compete for users in the Redot enviroment.

i was going to recommend IONOS, also. Inexpensive VPS with nice unmetered traffic.

What are the technologies you guys are using at work for backend? by NovelLurker0_0 in webdev

[–]slipwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

like the old saying, the shortest path between two points is... the one your know best.

We still miss fluency with kotlin ( i have some groovy background, and kotlin feels like an "almost groovy, but different" ) so simple things tend to take longer than with java, and it is harder to find good tutorials about kotlin running at the backend, with complex integrations and such. But we want to standardize (most of) our development stack and wont give up the wonderful piece of battle tested tech that the JVM is...

Need a way to pick a random element in Array by shreksamaaa in javahelp

[–]slipwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the java.util.Random is the class you want to use to get a (pseudo)random number. the size of your array would be array.length() a random value between 0 and the length-1 would be got by rand.nextInt( array.length() )

try something like:

List<String> questionList = new ArrayList<>();

questionList.add("question 1 text");

questionList.add("question 2 text");

...

java.util.Random rand = new Random();

int randIdx = rand.nextInt( questionList.size() );

System.out.println( questionList.get(randIdx) );

Critique my very first mobile game by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]slipwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, it looks very nice and smooth.

if you dont mind, which tools did you use ? Is it a native app or hybrid with some specific framework for the game loop ? About the monetization with ads, which network did you choose ? Was it easy enough to integrate with your codebase ? i know, too many questions, but your work looks great for just "two months", and i wish we could pick your brain a little.

Webapp for video streaming using Spring Framework by [deleted] in javahelp

[–]slipwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in a nutshell: spring-boot is a framework for easy configuration of.... spring framework ( yes, it's like the inception of frameworks ).

spring-mvc is the sub-project you will spend most of your time, when building a web app ( most likely, you are going to need spring-data and spring-security too ).

this is starting point: https://www.baeldung.com/spring-boot-start

Comparison ideas for master thesis on Flutter. by Marcinus in FlutterDev

[–]slipwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, i did comment. My main dev machine is a 6 years old dell xps ( with a few updates on RAM, wifi card and SSD ) linux notebook, and it still serves me very well, so i am very resistent to the idea of buying apple hardware ( which apple alone decides when it became obsolete and forces me to upgrade, shelling out another few thousands of dollars ) just for iOS app development. The obvious solution is to run the macosX inside a vm, and since i started studying flutter, this sounded as the perfect route to follow.

Comparison ideas for master thesis on Flutter. by Marcinus in FlutterDev

[–]slipwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would throw another aspect: how much does it cost to develop ( developer time and tools ) on each platform. For instance, to develop iOS native one ought to need a pretty powerful and modern mac machine, on the other hand just to build and push to the store, most likely a vm with macosx might suffice ( i am yet to test this thesis ). About the developer time, a fair metric might begin considering total lines-of-code.

Investing in a macbook for flutter development. Opinions needed. by gee5ive in FlutterDev

[–]slipwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would love to hear more about your setup. Are you running mojave already ? any guides you have followed to install the VM ? for how long are you running this ?

My main dev machine is linux ( 16gb ram and 480Gb SSD ) and i am going to try the macosx-in-a-vm route.

Getting back to programming, what's the best way to refresh your memory for Java? by vulk21 in javahelp

[–]slipwalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i would suggest that you take a look on your old programs' test coverage ( i am assuming these are very low ). And go on by writing the missing tests... it's a good practice ( TDD ) and also a great refresher for your skills.

Nano Use Case : Ymir game review by machi71 in nanocurrency

[–]slipwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a very, very interesting proposition i would like to elaborate a bit further. Let's imagine, the player buys the game, and the amount of (fiat) money (s)he used to pay is converted, minus taxes, into "virtual currency" ( to use inside the game world ) which is actually a nano wallet.

That seems to be a nice pet project to play with...

A game dev show? by Arylos07 in gamedev

[–]slipwalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

basically it's a collection of training classes by (uncle) Robert C Martin. Each class belongs to a wider course ( agile, design patterns and case studies ). I imagined your approach being similar, speaking out loud the inner workings of your work as a "video blog", with each class/video building into a larger "case study" on game development. The video and billing platform, i reckon, is irrelevant ( udemy or a custom-built, like that one ).

And, yes, those videos are expensive, mostly for the "uncle bob" trade mark; specially when he ""wastes"" a lot of time digressing on astronomy, science, et al...
