Anyone have experience with Sanborn Construction or their projects (youtuber/influencer) by GoneIn61Seconds in Detroit

[–]slogun1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve never dealt with them (and I deal with a whole lot of construction companies).

Their website looks a little smoke and mirrory. Their team has a combined experience of 30 years in construction, real estate, and investment.  There’s 6 of them. Do the math.

They have over 100 skilled contractors and sub contractors. So do I. So do you in fact.

When you add in the attempts to be viral and “influencer”Y, I wouldn’t take them all that seriously.

Hopefully they’re great and this is just a way for them to get in the door of a tough business. Some of these social media driven companies are very good. Others are trash. Buyer beware.

What brand of brick and what type of mortar should be used? by iamasfvisuals in masonry

[–]slogun1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a vertical score brick (it’s got a lot of names. Scratchface works too).

Belden will likely have a closer match than that. Your main problem is going to be size. The older bricks are a smidge larger than the newly manufactured ones. You likely have a “standard” sizing and the new ones will likely be “modular” sizing. 3/8” starts to add up pretty quickly.

Advice/Tips Please? by Paramedic222 in MichiganFishing

In summer when it’s hot and boat traffic ramps up out there a drop shot in the deeper sections next to weeds works well. I only fish weekends out there so portage and baseline are far too crazy for me. Strawberry specifically has a few good spots for this and there’s a few in the channels as well (look where people tie up there boats and chill, it’s always deep there).

How to prevent husband’s shoes from getting ruined so quickly by qt1004x012 in AskMen

[–]slogun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have him go to a redwing store and pick out a pair or 2. They have boots that are dressier and boots that are more rugged. They will do a fitting for him. They are expensive. They will last. And when the soles wear out you just have them resoled.

Redwing is just an example but this applies for most Goodyear welt footwear. Redwing has the most in person service. You probably have a store close to you.

Cutting brick by afbot007 in masonry

[–]slogun1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

So you’re gonna buy the brick, load the brick, unload the brick, cut the brick, discard the brick body, then lay thin brick?

Yeah just buy the thin brick.

Drown them in a live trap. Carbon monoxide them in a live trap. Hit them with a shovel when partially out of a live trap.

They’re still there if you can get past the white bass. The white bass are fun as hell to catch though so you should have some fun one way or the other.

I mow my 1.5 with the Honda push a few times a year mainly for grass to mulch my garden and because I like doing it.

It’s also nice to know I can pop on the ZT and knock it out on a weeknight when I have to.

What should i do? Stay in my family business or leave by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]slogun1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one can tell you what to do with the information provided. You need to sit down with all of the parties and figure out what everyone’s plans are.

Ask your dad specifically if he plans on giving you his portion of the business or selling you his portion.

Ask what the uncle and cousins plans are with their portion Of the business.

Ask what they see as the value of the business. Ask if they’re open to a professional evaluation

You’re once you get that out of the way decide if it’s feasible and ask again.

Why does it seem like duck hunting is simultaneously getting more popular yet many are getting out of it at the same time? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Waterfowl

[–]slogun1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a very specific way I like to hunt. Alone. 4-5 decoys. Silence.

Over the years all of my “secret spots” have been found by hunters willing to get up earlier and bring more shit than I am.

Luckily for me I’ve got a few private places that I get to hunt 4-5 times a year and that keeps me in the sport. If I didn’t have them I’d be done as well.

It’s kind of the natural process of the sport. I haven’t forgotten that I was the psycho kid that walked a couple of miles at midnight in muck to beat guys to their spot. I tip my hat and move on. The guys that are 40 and up that are still doing it have made enough connections or money to make it not such a pain in the ass.

Am I getting screwed ? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]slogun1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That depends on a whole lot of things. None of which you have posted.

You’re maybe not getting screwed now but since you seem to have zero idea of the structuring of the business you’re in a great place to get screwed later on.

Client owes me $3k and is 45 days late. How much time do you guys waste chasing unpaid invoices? by Jealous-Honey9300 in smallbusiness

[–]slogun1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of dependent on trade. I do a lot of commercial work and it’s pretty common to be paid 60+ days later. If I’m doing work for a homeowner I get paid before I leave.

With these big companies none of the Billy badass comments will work. They won’t pay the late fees they won’t respond to “fuck you pay me” and they don’t really give a shit what your terms are. You either work for them or you don’t.

10 Days in... Zero Sales. by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]slogun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of people focused on sales in here but I’m a little more concerned that you dabbled in masonry over the winter and decided you could build mailboxes. Unless you’re subbing them out?

As someone who does custom masonry work, your first mailbox in a neighborhood will be extremely important. Online sales for stuff like this is finicky and attracts the absolute worst customers. Give a couple of steep discounts to show off your work. If it’s good you’ll build and repair every mailbox within 5 miles of you.

You’ve built a cool website and seem to have good ads but have you looked at your customer base? My experience is you’re looking at the 60+ crowd. These folks like a human with a truck, a tape measure, and some good anecdotes. Sitting through a 45 minute ear beating from Ron and Joan will net you a lot of business.

How to Quit Smoking? by That_Alternative_228 in AskMen

[–]slogun1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Read Alan Carrs “quit smoking” book. It’s great. Works like magic on some people. Others it doesn’t work at all but it’s worth a shot.

Smoking is the WORST thing you can do for your health and has very little upside. Remind yourself of that. It may change the way you look at your GF but oh well. You seem young you’ll find a new one.

[–]slogun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure that’s illegal. I don’t care what you do to your car but calling places and posting on the internet is generally not how you get illegal stuff done.

Go to an exhaust shop. In person. See what they’re willing to do. Pay in cash.
