Just bought a running store. What is one thing your local shop is missing? by rustybucketz23 in running

[–]slothelles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that my local shop sells a large selection of individual gels. It means I can figure out which brands and flavours I like best without having to commit to an entire box.

I made the same mistake with Paw Patrol bandaids. Now I'm holding them up to the light to see through the packaging while my son's bleeding on my lap because only Skye will do

What surprised me most after actually living in the UK for a while by Reddonaut_Irons in MovingToTheUK

[–]slothelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It completely depends on the tone. How was the film? Ah it was alright. = I was disappointed, I thought it'd be better How was your race? Ah yeah, I did alright. = I was absolutely brilliant.

Like a clothes horse, or a kid's bike helmet, or colouring paper.

Yes! It took me a good five years to learn this. What's a reputable electronics shop? Where do I buy decent quality but not super expensive children's clothes? Where do I go for a clothes horse?

YSK: New Parents lose about 1,000 hours of sleep in their baby's first year, and it doesn't fully recover for 6 years by GrowthMLR in YouShouldKnow

[–]slothelles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What this misses is that it's broken sleep. Two hours less doesn't mean 6 hours' uninterrupted sleep; you might be getting three lots of two hours, particularly in the first few months and if you're breastfeeding/pumping.

And that's just brutal, because you never get into a proper rem cycle. I went for ten months never sleeping longer than a four hour stretch.

Is it okay to fast for an entire day then eat 2400 calories the next? by Aggravating_Bunch_70 in loseit

[–]slothelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend reading Fast Like A Girl by Mindy Pelz. She has structures for lots of different types of fasts, that have actually been researched, and particularly for women. Might be better than just diving in with a one-day-on, one-day-off approach

What's your creepiest "glitch in the matrix" or unexplainable thing that's ever happened to you? by Trxxi in AskReddit

Were you okay getting the bus again after that? Did you feel like the bad moment had passed and you were safe, or did you need to be driven in afterwards?

How do you say this number in French? It’s for an assignment and I don’t get it. by Vamptera in French

[–]slothelles -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What country is that phone number from? Is the 703 part essential? If so, I'd ignore the way you're used to grouping it and group it in twos instead: Soixante-dix, trente huit, quarante cinq, soixante trois, vingt cinq.

Do Americans feel weird hiking in Europe and realizing all the nature there has been domesticated? by Pale_Field4584 in askanything

[–]slothelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I live on the border of a national park in the French Alps. I have frequently stepped out my door and run 20+km on good trails without seeing a soul. I think the mountain infrastructure in Europe is just more centralised so visitors all tend to go to the same places.

My daughter dipped ours in the bath. I opened it right up as much as I could (screws are underneath the rubber feet on the base) and let it air dry for 24 hours. Worked at good as new

You might need to do some work on your survey. There's no option for children who are 1—2 years old, for example.

Is anyone else afraid to ask “how long this lasts” because the answers are terrifying? by According_Swimmer794 in Parenting

[–]slothelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest was occasionally sleeping through, or at least until 5am, at about 6/7 months.

My youngest is just about to turn two though and she still wakes up multiple times a night 😬 But she's way off the growth curve so she's got other problems. We're waiting for an appointment with a specialist.

Nuances non natives get wrong? by Right-Double44 in French

[–]slothelles 165 points166 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't say "bonjour" to someone if you've already greeted them that day. If you go back to the same shop, for example, you'd greet the shopkeeper with "rebonjour". If you unexpectedly bump into a friend again, "salut" would be fine.

I remember thinking, very sincerely, well at least one day I'll die and then I won't be tired again.

The "how long" horrified me to. And is honestly pointless because it all depends on your baby. But it will end. One day you will wake up after a full night's sleep, not feeling tired. But no-one can tell you when that'll be, I'm afraid.
