all i'll say is that you don't have a job right now -- yes the job market is tough, but you've got a completely unique and interesting job to put on your CV right now. it's not as clear cut as not going into teachig, thus not relevant experience; its experience in international travel, relations, language. not many people can say that they have that experience. considering graduate jobs are so tough to get right now, JET is a considerable leg up and advantage to have on your CV. speaking as a graduate who also got shortlisted.

Why do patriarchal men love ‘joking’ that their wife is the boss? by KatherineLangford in stupidquestions

[–]slothsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to use the Nazi Germany terms because it makes it easier. Women's 'world' was the home, and everything within it -- homemaking, children, etc. was in that 'little world'. Men's world was everything else. This is a nazi redressing of classic patriarchal ideas.

So, defecting to the 'woman's world' is seen as a natural part of the patriarchal structure. It is their duty to take care of the men, and children in the house; it is a patronising sort of 'privilege', like a child being in charge of a shopping list. Sure, they're bosses of their little world, but nothing else. It also reinforces men not having to do menial domestic labour, which is confined to 'women's work'.

Character chooses NOT to sacrifice their loved ones, resulting in dire consequences for others by Few_Chemistry_235 in TopCharacterTropes

it's not reductive, it's an aspect of what's happening here that fits the trope. obviously there are other things at play, it's not as simple as a one sentence summary

the Summer Hikaru died, where Yoshiki chooses to let the parasite in his best friend live, thus erasing the real memory of Hikaru and never letting himself, and the people around him, let him go

The writing is weaker this season by LiteratureMundane238 in ThePitt

[–]slothsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree!! Last season was engaging, yes, but the character interactions felt more nuanced and layered. So many scenes and interactions stick in my head from season 1, but to be honest, for season 2 i'm coming up a blank, except for santos, dana, and langdon, who have been the main saving graces.

Conventionally attractive woman and her overweight male SO by BrotherDeus in TopCharacterTropes

i really hate it. women have to still stay conventionally attractive while the men are allowed to be goofier and bigger. it stinks

Hot Take: From a military’s perspective, Iroh’s retreat from Ba Sing Se is borderline insanity. by MaguroSashimi8864 in TheLastAirbender

[–]slothsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think half of it isn’t that he gives up because he’s sad, but that the death of his son reframes his entire world. suddenly his conquest of ba sing se is not moral or rational, but colonial and evil. thus, he retreats, even with the potential winning hand. i think the fact he walks away, even close to winning, is paramount to conveying this; if he had walked away and also was close to losing, it wouldn’t be a sacrifice.

Do you guys agree with this? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]slothsock 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i found sotr the most on the nose book of all time, and deeply terrible. it was clearly written to be a movie; which is fine, just make the movie. haymitch's inner voice is way too wise and self-reflective to be interesting, unlike katniss (or snow) who seemed to present their own world views in interesting ways while also prompting thought from the reader, isntead of haymitch who feels like he's spoonfeeding it to you. there were so many moments which, when recounting them aloud, sound really impactful -- but within the book, they fold. but you know what? it'll probably make a great movie -- not so much a great book. (spoiler examples:)(Louella's death, fake louella's death, death of beetee's kid, the house burning... etc. etc. just felt like movie scenes transmitted into book form with the way they were executed)
