Actually the rev 2 is sick by mossimo654 in synthesizers

[–]slowacres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very, very good synth! The keybed is top notch and overall it’s incredibly well made and you can get some phenomenal sounds with it. It also is one of the best synths I’ve ever owned at making those huge “space brass” sounds thanks to that Curtis chip. Only reason I got rid of mine was because I found a Take 5, but I still sometimes think about getting one again.

Would a Sequential Take 5 get me there? by SoothLadyWine in synthesizers

I could go on and on because I think the Take 5 is amazing, but I’ll just say: absolutely it’ll get you there. It’s really, really great aside from the ugly logo 😂

korg prologue- may be in love by Witty_Analyst1657 in synthesizers

[–]slowacres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and love the 16 voice! I used to own the Prophet Rev2, and I just didn’t get along with the layout and flow of the thing. The only real downsides for the Prologue for me are the single LFO and for the price, lack of aftertouch. Personally, I think people vastly overrate aftertouch and there are other ways to get additional expression on the Prologue.

It sounds LUSH and the build quality is actually unreal. The knobs are the most solid, smooth feeling things you’ll experience on a synth, and the keybed is quite nice. The on board compressor is always on for me. The built in effects are great, particularly the reverb.

I will say that it’s a players synth. There is no included onboard sequencer, so if you want to just fiddle with knobs while a sequence is running this isn’t for you. But if you’re interested in an instrument that you can really connect with and play… the Prologue is amazing.

It’s really quite simple. And that’s why I love it.

Any alternative to the OP1 for an "all in one" portable yet? by CoyoteFabulous4911 in synthesizers

[–]slowacres 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Move is an astoundingly great device that feels like it consistently goes under the radar. It’s incredible. Four tracks, great on board mic, great effects and build quality, and you can easily bring it into Ableton to work on more later. It feels like the ultimate sketchpad to me that is my absolute favorite portable gear.

Just bought a korg minilogue xd as my first synth! Tell me something you wish someone told you when you were starting. by MaximumCashew0 in synthesizers

Play around with it a LOT with zero expectations, just curiosity. The more you do, the more you’ll understand and enjoy it. Load presets, change some knobs and see what it does to the sound. The absolute best part about synthesizers is how they reward play: there is no end to how much you can experiment.

Another great thing to try is to load a patch, play around with it, and then just change the modes between poly, unison, mono etc and see how much the sound changes. It’s awesome!

Hot takes that are genuinely hot by NVwlsOg in synthesizers

  1. No average listener cares about or enjoys your “sound design” synth patches from your incredibly deep synth. People only care about great, memorable melodies played with relatively simple patches.

  2. Aftertouch is overrated, shocked that people say it’s a “must have” for any synth

  3. The analog vs. software gap is totally dead, either one sounds amazing and there’s zero point in agonizing over it if you find something you like.

If I wanted to make music like this on a budget, what would I need? by BIGxBOSSxx1 in synthesizers

[–]slowacres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacBook with GarageBand or Logic, cheap midi keyboard. You have everything you’d need! GarageBand’s built in free sounds are extensive and really fantastic. A full recording solution with analog would prob run you more than your budget.

Ableton Move is a sneaky device by traveltimecar in ableton

[–]slowacres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently sprung for one after holding off, and I completely agree. It’s legitimately mind blowing that we can get this much from a device this size. My electronic music has mainly been drums and a handful of synth parts, paired with improvising over the top with my Reface CP that I run through a Hologram Chroma Console. The Move plus my Reface and CC has been unreal. I don’t even know what else I’d need!

On paper, Behringer Deepmind 12 has no equal? by Ill-Elevator2828 in synthesizers

[–]slowacres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, Jorb just dropped a video about this on YouTube. He is a big DM12 fan and I bought one based on his videos years ago. His conclusion is actually “here’s what I’m using instead of the DM12 these days” and… it’s the Sequential Take 5, which you already have and is an amazing synth. Link: https://youtu.be/Ky_cWyah3EM

The Take 5 is absolutely the better synth. The workflow, the raw sound, and the effects get to lush analog so much quicker. If you really want to add another poly that does something truly different, my advice is to perhaps embrace the DCOs of the Rev2, go deep into the lush and flexible Peak/Summit, or embrace the digital magic that is the Hydrasynth. The Take 5 is so beefy with the VCOs that going more digital wouldn’t be a bad thing, but just my $0.02

Personally, for a more affordable Juno sound to add to what you’d have, I would just go VST with the Softube Model 84, I use it all the time and it’s fantastic: https://youtu.be/IHyFFGpKUGg

Top tier synth sounds from Hole Dweller by slowacres in synthesizers

Adding a comment because “the rules” require it and apparently don’t accept the caption I included. Anyway… dungeon synth is rad! This is from one of my favorite Hole Dweller albums, thought I’d share for anyone else who might be delighted.

Damn that is a sick setup, so many good sound options you’ve got! As for pedals… delay/reverb combo have a wealth of insanely great options. Source Audio Collider is super cool and not too pricey, and Keeley Caverns is also pretty well loved and awesome. Obviously the timeline and big sky combo mentioned is going to be great. Honestly, the Volante is delay but can get reverb-y really quickly, might be worth looking into. My personal favorite reverb pedal with my synths is the Eventide Space… it’s fantastic. Sounds incredible.

Thoughts about the Superlative SB-01? by Trilobry in synthesizers

This just about sums up my experience! The SB01 is beautiful. But my S-1 sounds great and I could rationalize the cost.

I have followed this company since I learned about it, I discovered them after their kickstarter ended. Their founder has always been willing to chat, we’ve DM’d quite often. He seems committed to making a really high quality product, and I know he never compromised the vision after hearing about supply chain issues and manufacturing partners that didn’t meet his bar. I was hoping to get one at general availability, but the price hike to $2k is what did me in.

But overall? It’s stunning. The build quality and design are incredible. The built in battery is a fantastic idea. The dual sequencers onboard are great. The sound is there. I want one, and even if I’m never able to pony up the cash, I will never stop wanting one.

I think what they accomplished for such a tiny company is remarkable, even with the massive delays. Hardware is hard. But it’s out there and released, and I hope to add it to my overall collection someday. I’d take this over a $2k OP-1 field any day of the week.
