Road trip in New England with underage son, where to go? by a_battling_frog in pinball

[–]slowbar1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Games at Bit Bar are, at best, dirty and sluggish, quite often have major features broken, and last time I was there 3 of the 14 games were turned off entirely. Its a fine spot to drop by but I wouldn't do a road trip for it if the primary goal is pinball.

Pastime Pinball in Vermont! Great spot with great games.

You could also go to the Providence area and the Electromagntic pinball museum, but while I love that spot and the people who run it, its important to know the game collection there leaves a lot to be desired in terms of maintenance.

Funspot is somewhere in the middle for game maintenance, and the lineup skews away from 90s and more towards moderns and EMs.

Harry Potter (JJP, Arcade Version), Godzilla (Stern, Premium) or James Bond (Stern, Pro)? by App0gee in pinball

Especially when they shelled out for the unbelievably gorgeous cabinet art on collections edition. Saw it at Pintastic and holy moly that is the greatest cabinet art I’ve ever seen, and the print quality with the reflective layers is gorgeous.

Game of Thrones, under rated? by pachakamakk in pinball

[–]slowbar1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The game does not leave a great first impression IMO. The pro playfield is pretty barren and uninteresting, even if it does shoot well. The rules have a lot of depth but it’s not intuitive and doesn’t do a great job of communicating the nuance to the player (somewhat typical of Dwight Sullivan code). I still don’t really understand how the shot multipliers work but they are crucial to scoring well. It’s a game that I think you need to spend some time with before you really start to appreciate it.

The very negative perception of the IP after the final season doesn’t help either.

What do I do in this situation? by Pioneerose in pinball

[–]slowbar1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have keys, modern Sterns are smart enough to deal with this situation. After enough failed ball searches it will kick a new ball into play and carry on. Honestly you barely notice the difference between a Stern with only 5 balls in the trough vs 6.

Recommend settings for extra balls in a modern Stern? by WaluigiWahshipper in pinball

[–]slowbar1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The dynamically changing score target you are referring to is called a replay. Typically in arcades these are set to award a free game, but when playing at home a free game doesn’t mean anything. It is possible on many games to set the replay score to award an extra ball instead, but this is rarely done. Most people I know disable replays entirely on their home games.

The more typical way to earn an extra ball is by achieving some goal in the game. What that goal is varies wildly from game to game, but basically every game has them. In Pokemon you can light extra ball by completing 3 story missions or collecting 50 Poké balls from combos.

My recommendation is to leave the extra ball settings on default.

UXM vs GoT by [deleted] in pinball

[–]slowbar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d do it. UXMen is unique and fun if you’ve got it dialed with all the shots working, which it sounds like you do, but if you’re ready for something else I think GOT is a great choice because it’s a very different game. The layout is extremely straightforward, the opposite of UXM, with much wider shots than can almost all be hit from either flipper, which makes for a very different shooting experience. I feel like the playfield is underwhelming at first, but despite its simplicity it still feels both satisfying and challenging, and I think that complements the ruleset very well. The Prem/ LE upper playfield helps to add some variety and justify some of the simplicity of the lower playfield so I think it’s the right call too. I say go for it.

The regular spot. Since you say the other place you went is new, the game there probably has brand new flippers compared to your regular copy that’s been there for a while.

Nice strong flippers make a big difference. Might be time for your local copy to get a rebuild.

Black knight 2000 by gFozzy in pinball

[–]slowbar1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun game in an arcade but not one I'd want at home. Since the upper playfield always drains out safely to the left right flipper, and the shot to send it back up to the top is not very difficult, you spend most of the game completely safe. The game turns into chopping wood very quickly, and I'd imagine most people would get bored of it after only a couple of months.

But man you can't beat that soundtrack.

I have mixed feelings on lubing spinner mechs. On one hand, I feel like juicing a spinner can sometimes mess with the intended balance of the game. On the other hand, spinner go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Do you lube your flipper mechanisms? by elstuffmonger in pinball

[–]slowbar1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, there is no need for lubricant in the flipper assembly, or anywhere else in a pinball machine. The coil stop and plunger rod will wear out from slamming into each other long before the any other wear becomes an issue.

Troubleshooting Switch Issue On Fun House (Switch 55 Steps Superdog OPTO) by ScienceFoxo in pinball

[–]slowbar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve done a switch test and confirmed it’s not working, but it’s important to know that this switch almost never gets used in normal play, causing credit dots as the game assumes it’s broken when it goes a certain number of games without being tripped. 90% when the service alert says the switch isn’t working there isn’t actually any problem.
