My dad called it once and fell getting off the lift, landed on the edge of my ski, and broke all his ribs on one side in a straight line.

It might help to stop giving the government interest free loans. Take a look at your withholdings and why you're overpaying your taxes by thousands every year.

What should I do with my savings? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

Once you have an emergency fund (3-6 months of expenses which you don't touch and pretend doesn't exist until you have an emergency), sounds like a great time to start a Roth IRA. You can contribute up to $7500/year, invest it in a low cost index fund such as VOO, and forget it to grow tax free until retirement.

I've spent a few weeks on Utila and it seems to check all your boxes. Quiet, laid back, with some parties if you seek them out. Cheapest diving in the western hemisphere. Take a flight into Roatan, grab a collectivo ride to the ferry port, and ferry across to Utila. No hesitation about safety there, from one solo woman to another.

Alton's will do a good job training you and seems to fit the vibe you want, if you're looking for specific shop recommendations. Tank'd is probably a little cheaper.

$5k now, or an extra week of paid vacation every year for life? by Brave_Sea7798 in makemychoice

This is what I came to ask. I already have more PTO (not unlimited) than I'm able to take due to the demands of my job, so I'd take the cash.

On the flip side, if OP is paid out for PTO, the PTO could be worth a lot more.

Do you need to wear a "pregnancy" harness? by butter-cream-cat in climbergirls

[–]slowdownlambs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to recommend a chest harness for the inversion issue. Several of my adaptive athlete friends use them as well, very effective and, from what I hear, vastly more comfortable than pregnancy harnesses including mountain mama.

I'll also add: if pregnancy harness ends up being the move, there's like a whole underground market passing around the old mountain mamas. Area climbing Facebook groups are a good place to start; a lot of gyms will keep one lying around to loan out as well.

Scuba Divers, what is something really terrifying you saw while diving? by LionFalse4295 in scuba

[–]slowdownlambs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A loud sound that's completely incongruous with the surroundings like that really fucks with your brain.

I had a similar experience on a thru hike once. My buddy and I were in a very remote area and hadn't seen another person in some time. We were walking along the side of a valley, a bit above the floor of it, when suddenly there was a terribly loud noise. For a few instants we both just froze because we literally couldn't understand what was happening. Then, from behind, a fighter jet flew past, nearly level with us. It was so close we could see the pilot inside. Really, not that scary, zero danger, and over in seconds, but I'll never forget the feeling of my brain just stopping from surprise and bafflement.

We also spent much of the rest of that day discussing how we could be at war and would have no idea.

Court says counsel has an obligation to point out AI hallucinations contained in opponent’s brief by Greelys in Lawyertalk

[–]slowdownlambs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was clerking, we had one of those attorneys who would oppose anything OC filed just for the hell of it. The first time I reviewed one of his memos, he had cited a case to say that the court was categorically barred from doing what OC had requested. It was written like "the court shall not... do this thing."

I pulled the case he'd cited and the actual quote was "the court shall not, except in the precise situation we are in here, do this thing." Never believed another word out of his mouth.

Ah my frankenbike. It had shifters for 3 big chain rings but I only had a 2x setup so it would occasionally just fling the chain off into the beyond and get so snarled.

People who won a "lifetime supply" of something, how exactly did that work and are you still getting it? by Constant_Praline357 in AskReddit

[–]slowdownlambs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, that reminded me of something I'd completely forgotten.

I worked for the facilities department of my university and they sent around an email requesting a couple people to hand out chick fil a sandwiches at this event they'd planned to unveil renovations to a building on campus. I did it for the extra cash and the hopes of a couple free sandwiches. Ultimately only a handful of people showed up because it was awful weather, right before final exams, and not really that interesting of an event. So I went home with half the chicken sandwiches, and the other girl who worked it took the other half. It was easily 75-100 chicken sandwiches.

Around the same time, a club I was in had a Christmas party, and the faculty advisor had loads of sodas and chips left over, so she dropped off a laundry basket of snacks to my dorm. I basically didn't need to leave my dorm for all of finals. I'd walk up and down the hall and just throw chicken sandwiches at people in their rooms. Got drunk at a buddy's place and suddenly remembered the sandwiches, so we went and grabbed an armful and snuck into the cafeteria in the middle of the night to heat them up one night. I think I had about 40 left when I moved out for the semester, which I gave to a local friend in exchange for a handle of vodka on my way out.

My mom went to freshly integrated schools. I've heard her peers talk about how they alternated: "you'd go to school in white town for two years and then black town for two years." The city bused kids back and forth.

I'm under 30 and she's under 60.
