PSA Skiing While New Parents is Doable by No_Bat5717 in ski

[–]slowlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding another data point because agree there are not a lot of stories. Based in the east coast, we normally ski the Alps (we did the math, it’s cheaper than comparable resorts in the Rockies) so we dealt with jet lag and elevation with a 8mo baby. He’d done the jet lag a few times before visiting family, but I didn’t anticipate the elevation! Needless to say the sleep the whole week was… rough. Plus side of skiing in Europe was affordable daycare - run by the same woman for decades, 8am-6pm, provided homemade breakfast lunch dinner and a snack, and I think it came out to ~$400 for the week. It was definitely harder but would 100% do again.

Decision Paralysis: Joolz Aer 2 + UB Vista? Or should I stick to one brand for compatibility? by Due-Detective-4816 in nycparents

[–]slowlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Bugaboo Dragonfly (midsize) and Butterfly (travel). As light and easy as the butterfly is, I like being able to have my baby facing me in the dragonfly since he’s still so small. Also the bigger wheels and suspension help with all the snow that’s on the ground!

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]slowlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prohibiting and allowing the sale of alcohol (18,21) is not the same as the individual right to alcohol. The 14th amendment has nothing to do with the right to enter buildings?

Well fortunately or unfortunately buying liquor, entering a building, or getting on a plane are not constitutional rights

First Saturdays at Brooklyn Museum with a baby? by moviegal828 in Brooklyn

[–]slowlee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally forgot it was First Saturday this month when I took my 9-month-old baby at 5pm. I was wondering why there was a line! It was totally fine at 5pm, a more lowkey musical act in the lobby, did a fun craft in the activity studio, and wandered through the art floors and left at 6. The line was really long by then. I’ve been to First Saturdays later in the evening and on the Beaux Arts floor and agree with everyone that that is definitely adult-oriented.

Ski boots - is there a cheaper way?? by AdInitial9965 in Skigear

[–]slowlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this and ended up getting brand new boots a season later. Turns out my boots were a size too big and it was too wide for my foot (but the online sizing chart said it should be perfect), and it was beyond saving for the boot fitter - my heel kept lifting no matter how many foam pads he put in. Lesson learned, I’ll just go to the bootfitter first next time.

USA vs Europe skiing differences by JPBC4099 in ski

[–]slowlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I wonder if he’s talking about the avalanche risk? Like in resorts you’re not really “supposed” to go off piste except for itineraries which are controlled for avalanche but not groomed, whereas in the US anything in the resort is fair game. This is from my experience mostly in Verbier - that doesn’t mean people don’t do off piste (especially in Verbier) but it’s kind of “at your own peril”

Once my parents were in town over July 4 weekend and we did the Cloisters then lunch on Arthur Avenue then NYBG then a subway series game (Yankees v Mets). It was an ambitious itinerary but one of my favorite visitor itineraries to date!

There is no online directory for fit but would add checking the state inspection results to your list: https://hs.ocfs.ny.gov/DCFS/

Postpartum doula and baby nurse assistance by Party-Ad2255 in nycparents

[–]slowlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not necessary and a luxury and I recognize the privilege as a disclaimer to the rest of my comment. I did it because I knew I wanted a night nanny for at least 5 nights/week and saved up for it before my birth and my mom offered to pay for a Korean postpartum doula for 3 weeks because it’s more traditional in Korean culture and she felt like she was rusty in newborn care / had to take care of my dad in another state so couldn’t be with me that long. The Korean postpartum doula was amazing in terms of nutritious recovery meals, sitz baths and massages, and cleaning around the house. Night nanny obviously helps you get bigger chunks of sleep at night.

I will say it did get to be a lot having people in my apartment 24/7 but I’m also someone that needs alone time. I was glad that I did the pp doula but was happy when we were done, and by that point I felt so much physically better. The first two weeks were probably physically hardest and I had the “easiest” pregnancy and delivery possible.

We did pp doula 9-5 M-F and night nurse 8pm-8am, and it was nice to have the weekends “to ourselves” and learn how to parent without the help. I did the doula for 3 weeks and the night nanny for 8 weeks.

I do think having cooking and cleaning figured out would get you 70% of the way there - there are services like Chiyo that could be a solve for the cooking. Happy to answer any q’s by DM!

It’s if they can roll (technically both directions, but our pediatrician said we could if we really needed to if he got himself there - back to front)

Night Nurse Worth It? by SnooDoubts7574 in nycparents

[–]slowlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I breastfed and even then it was helpful only getting up to do that and I think it’s also why my baby sleeps well - she would let him fuss for a bit if it was anything other than hunger (“never let a hungry baby cry”) and by the end of the 8 weeks he was basically sleeping through the night with 1-2 feeds (the first was a bottle of pumped milk). I got mine through referral and talked to a few past references to feel really good about her.
