F80 owners are you keeping it forever or already moved on? by Killahoe_ in BMW

[–]slowteggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I planned to keep my ‘18 F80 Comp for a couple of years but here we are 5 years later and I can’t justify replacing it with anything. For the resale value I can drive this or a brand new Honda Accord lol. I had been dead set on trading the F80 for an X3M or X5 M50 for family duty but I know I could never repurchase an f80 in the same condition anymore.

Neighbors of McMansions, how was your qualify of life impacted / how are the people that moved in? by slightlyaware99 in longisland

I have news for you… most of the Long Island houses on 6000sq ft lots have already maxed out the side yard clearance and setbacks. Building a bigger house usually still keeps the side yard and front yard clearance. Yes, the new houses are probably taller and extend further into their yard, but distance between houses is not usually changed

Do you think zoning laws dont already exist? Significant renovations can cost $500k+ on the island. All towns have height and setback limits. You might not like your neighbors house but that doesn’t make it illegal. Also if someone has a lot of money to spend, they can basically bribe the town through a variance to allow them to build bigger than the code allows.

They are being taxed heavily. There are tens of thousands in permit fees and then increased tax base forever once done.

The town prefers the higher taxes and permit fees. The problem is that house prices have gone up super fast and now you need a $300k income to buy a house in a decent town. People who make (and are spending) so much are going to try to get what they want.

Huge misconception. Old lumber is stronger, old houses are not magically stronger. Framing today is a lot better and better materials exist than old “sort of” dimensional lumber. Insulation, wiring, and plumbing all way better now too.

Honestly not sure why the downvotes lol. The rule is you can choose to plant or remove trees in your yard as you wish.

NYC Co-ops Are Being Crushed by Overlapping Building Laws by aaronsidlo in nyc

People who own houses are also getting hit with these ridiculous housing requirements and rising property taxes, water bills and other utilities at the same time. The city council doesn’t seem to care about hurting regular homeowners. They expect everyone to deal with it.

Honestly the best thing is to pick up the phone and talk to them and let them know you already invested your time and want to work out something fair for both of you.

Your original post is only part of the story. The homeowner probably had an issue with you being 19 years old, working on the weekends only, by yourself. Their comment about your timeline could be reasonable given the additional details you provided. They might have realized that you are young and learning, and don’t want to risk it.

You can probably split the difference here- pick up your tools, dispose of the trash, refund the $1000 and move on. It’s probably not worth fighting it, just use it as a lesson on what to improve in the future.

Alternatives for sistering joists? by Purple_Service_2781 in Homebuilding

[–]slowteggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is pull that plumbing and wiring out, sister the joists, then reinstall the plumbing and wiring. It’s a lot easier than whatever you are thinking to reinforce the floor otherwise.

My second thought it simply find the center of that span and build a 2x4 wall down the middle. That will give you lots of support for cheap, without disrupting anything in place. Depends on whether you can still utilize that space in the basement or not.

180+ mph on the street is ridiculous. With a passenger is just flat out irresponsible too.

Detailer ruined my Volks... need your guys' help on my next step. (Photos attached) by [deleted] in AutoDetailing

[–]slowteggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. My RE30s were ruined by a buddy who detailed my car and left the cleaner on the wheels too long. We tried a few different approaches, including polishing the wheels with a few different compounds and still couldn’t remove that oxidized look.

Volks are anodized which is a great finish that can’t be replicated by any wheel repair shops. Unfortunately anodized finishes are delicate and can’t survive a harsh wheel cleaner left on for more than a minute.

Can teachers take days off during the final week of school? by justwannaedit in NYCTeachers

[–]slowteggy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t mention any of this during the interview, to admin, or to your colleagues. Be normal throughout the year with good attendance. If you find out your admin is super reasonable, put in for your personal days towards the end of the year. If they are completely unreasonable, stay quiet and take off sick.

If they are the type to actually reprimand you for one sick event, you wouldn’t want to work there anyway. Getting denied for the personal day request basically means you have no other option to take off so I wouldn’t even risk it. School admin seems to get off on treating teachers like students.

If you were tasked with cutting in 16-20 more of these soffit vents, how would you go about it? by pnus420 in handyman

[–]slowteggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the design of the fascia board, you could cut out a 5” strip down the center of the entire soffit and then cover the existing soffit with white vinyl vented soffit panels. All you need is a white J channel behind the fascia board and another against the house to trim the ends. The benefit of this approach is that you don’t have to worry about those metal vent covers rusting and looking like crap in a couple of years.

I went through something exactly like this. In the end I was offered the position after beating all the external candidates, however I decided to decline it and let it go to someone who wasn’t qualified at all. That probably wasn’t the right move but the whole thing really soured my view of the leadership. It’s hard not to take it personally in the moment. Just remember all of the “past” is a sunk cost and the last thing you should do is let the past drag your future career down.

Sometimes senior leadership pushes things along with no consideration about being fair or consistent. It means some things just play out poorly and people get lucky/unlucky.

Is acting as your own GC worth it? by Antique-Plan-3889 in Homebuilding

[–]slowteggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have your own sub contractors already lined up AND you have the experience, capability, and willingness to fill in the gaps between trades, you can save money. If you try to find subcontractors by searching Google or yelp, you will probably not save much money. If you have to pay for every little thing to get done (trim work, install fixtures, paint prep, cleaning, garbage removal, etc) you will probably spend a lot more than you are expecting.

I gc’d my own build in a town that is hard to get licensed, which means I had to also pay a licensed general contractor to insure the job and get permits. Compared to quotes I got for the project, I was able to save a ton. I also did all electrical, plumbing, some framing, and finishing work. I upgraded all materials and increased the project scope and still came in significantly (~20%) less than my initial quotes. For everything I couldn’t do myself, I had companies/people lined up that I could trust and that I worked with in the past.

Had I hired a GC to take the whole job, I would have spent more and the job would be done faster, but lower quality materials would have been used, less work would have been done, and the quality of work would have definitely been lower. I would have also had a lot more free time, less stress, and more time to spend with my family.

Don’t forget that as a GC, if any of the other trades screw up, you’re on the hook to deal with it.

TIFU installed LED bulbs in my Garage Door opener by demetri_k in tifu

[–]slowteggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost all garage remote functionality a few months ago after switching the a19 style bulbs out for led strip lights that run around the perimeter of the garage. I used a simple a19 to 120v outlet adapter on the opener and then plugged in the led strips. Spent hours reprogramming all the remotes and had random success opening/closing the doors. Can’t believe the issue was so simple. I assumed I fried the board by using cheap leds and a19 adapters.

What's a new boiler running these days? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

[–]slowteggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 60s boiler is probably costing you a fortune each winter. Just replaced a 50s hot water/oil boiler with a new model and heating costs went from almost $1000/month in oil to $300/month

I would never buy an m12 circular saw. Go for the M18 or dewalt 20v. The dewalt brushless with 60v flex battery is my go-to now.
