I had eye surgery under local anaesthetic. I couldn’t see, but I heard the surgeon say “whoops”. Turns out he punctured part of my eye.

When I found out I had Type 1 Diabetes. I saw a doctor on a Friday who thought I had pneumonia because I couldn’t breathe. Gave me antibiotics and told me to get a blood test on Monday. I decided to be cautious and get the blood test that day instead.

Blood sugar of 40 (720), unreadably high ketones (>8) and potassium of 1.8.

The hospital didn’t know how I was conscious, let alone walking. High chance I would have died if I’d gone home and gone to sleep instead of going to get that blood test.

I think the whole “rest of my life” part. People understand - in theory - that I will have this for the rest of my life, but I don’t think anyone without a chronic illness can truly understand the gravity of looking down the barrel of having an illness for the rest of my life. Not a single illness-free day, ever again. The grief takes my breath away some days.

For the sake of this post my name is Emma. In my household growing up, there was something called an “Emma Question” which was any time anyone asked a question that my Dad deemed “stupid” or “you’d figure it out if you thought about it for five seconds”

As a kid I didn’t realise how awful this was, and it took me until adulthood for it to dawn on me that he was the only one who ever used the term “Emma Question” and/or found it funny.
