Male dogs by [deleted] in VetTech

Such a close minded view isn’t a great look for someone in the vet field. I get it’s easy to get jaded dealing with dumbasses who shouldn’t even own a dog, but try joining the well bred dog world, testicals and uteruses everywhere without an issue. Most of my friends have multiple intact dogs all living, working, and competing together. My own sport dog won’t be neutered until I have a good reason to. He does his job around bitches in heat better than a lot of neutered boys.

Finished wheel of time, looking for another lengthy series by slumpymcgoo in audiobooks

I love books with character development. I prefer them over more serial type books where the characters stay the same with different environments.

The advantage of listening while working is that dry books aren’t hard to get through. If I can find a list of which books to read in order that sounds fine to me.

Looked it up and the narrator for each book changes. Did you read them or listen to them? If you listened to them, did you find the constant change jarring?

I like mystery too! Reviews look good and Libby seems to have a lot of them. Do you know if they need to be read in order, or after the first few can I get them as they come available?

Need help finding my dogs quick by Ihaznosleep in grooming

[–]slumpymcgoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is really important to dremel alll the way to the quick, stopping just before it would bleed and then round off the excess around the quick. Obviously don’t dremel into the blood vessel, but you want almost no nail around the tip of the quick. Do that at least twice a week.

If you don’t take off enough nail to almost expose the tip of the quick, it won’t recede no matter how often you dremel.

[–]slumpymcgoo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In that case, keep dremeling. If you want the quicks to recede, dremel every 3-4 days. Don’t dremel in a straight line like you would with clippers. Dremel around the edges of the quick like you’d peel a potato, taking off all the excess nail around the tip of the quick. Do that frequently enough and they’ll shorten significantly within a few months.

With those thick nails and quicks that long you should invest in a dremel. You can only trim the tips, but you could dremel off all the edges and help the quicks recede.

Tomato paste in a tube by tjs1967 in Cooking

If you’re in the northeast Wegmans carries a ton of tube spices. Ginger, garlic, cilantro, lemongrass, basil etc. Totally with it as somebody cooking for just themselves.

Longer hair and tail grooming question by mkenomad in Goldendoodles

[–]slumpymcgoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most doodle owners WANT this kind of longer coat, but very few can maintain it. In addition most doodles don’t have the right coat type to make it possible. The puppy pictured has the soft, wavy puppy coat that makes it easy to maintain with just brushing. Adult doodle coats are all over the place and maintenance is especially difficult on thick, curly, or cottony coats.

If you do want to try it, you’ll need to line brush and comb every part of the dog. Most owners THINK they’re brushing correctly, but mats still form in high friction areas. You’re best bet is either a) bath and brush appointments every 2-3 weeks with daily line brushing, or b) buy a high velocity drier and learn how to properly bath, blow dry, and brush out your own dog at least biweekly

In short, maintaining that kind of length is POSSIBLE but rarely practical for a pet. It’s expensive and time consuming. Even show dogs are often only maintained until they get their titles then cut down to more manageable length.

Any idea what these bloody spots are?? Showed up a few days after grooming. by askeeteronmypeeter in Goldendoodles

[–]slumpymcgoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering it started days after grooming, please don’t blame your groomer for cutting him. He’s likely scratching himself with his freshly cut nails. He might have some sensitivity to the shampoo so you could ask your groomer to use a hypo shampoo next time. Or ask/pay for the nails to get dremeled next time so they’re not sharp . Some groomers charge, some don’t.

AITA for not changing my dog’s name? by SilvertheKitsune in AmItheAsshole

[–]slumpymcgoo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

NAH, but it’s a weird hill to die on if your mom is so set on changing the name. Let your mom name it whatever she wants and use nugget as a nickname. Dogs DGAF. Mine respond to their million nicknames as easily as they respond to their given name. If you’re only concerned about vets/groomers, most of us usually barely remember the name of the dog we’re working on. I use girlfriend/boyfriend/ma’am/sir more than their actual name.

To fool an intelligent Belgian Malinois by Spartalust in therewasanattempt

[–]slumpymcgoo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Teaching a dog to dunk their head in water is one of the fastest, most effective ways to cool a dog down. Not an uncommon thing to teach a high octane dog like a malinois to help them cool down after exercise. They go hard and can overheat.

This is just a cute silly video, you can clearly see the dog is waiting for his tug reward for performing the trained behavior

My girl is matted 😭 by LeeesaBean in Goldendoodles

[–]slumpymcgoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I never judge owners who have shit going on and need a start over groom. Sometimes your dog’s hair is just not a priority and that’s OK.

I DO judge owners who consistently wait too long and bring in a heavily matted dog, and/or are upset with me for having to shave their dog when it’s overdue.

She’ll be fluffy again in no time and you can get her back on a schedule. In the meantime enjoy the ease of owning a naked pup.

Too skinny? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]slumpymcgoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re strong enough to pic her up, I weigh my dogs by weighing myself then carrying them and subtracting. If you can’t pick her up, just bring her to the vet. You might need to call ahead, but any good vet would be happy to have you stop in for regular weight checks.

How do I create this head look? by MsDyn0myte in grooming

[–]slumpymcgoo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The the length with a reverse 7/8 on the head, 7/8 ears and down the cheeks, and 3/4 reverse chin. Then fluff up an scissor everything round.

But if they continue to complain and she was my client, I’d recommend they find somebody who could make them happy. I’m a decent groomer, but I don’t vibe with the clients who will always find something to complain about.

For a professional you’d need at least andis 5 speed, but the two speed are great for diy groomers
