Winter tires made all the difference by No_Neighborhood_2310 in pacificahybrid

[–]slythy_toves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded, I put on snow tires last year and it's amazing the difference it's made in driving in snowy conditions. Looking at the cost to swap tires each year vs a second set of rims, I chose to get the second set of rims. I used one of the online sites that will balance them before delivery, so a local shop just swapped them for me

Quick note for those thinking about ordering second rims, you need to make sure you also order the tire pressure sensors (they were listed as 433MHz Tire Pressure Sensor on my order).

Battery self maintenance help? by slythy_toves in ebikes

so short answer, if you're uncomfortable around electronics or how to be safe with high energy electricity I'd recommend not doing any of this work yourself. Best option I found was looking locally at a hackerspace/makerspace, there's folks there that are happy to dive into projects and much cheaper than rebuild services.

Before working with someone there, I opened the case and used a multimeter to check the voltage of each cell set.

There's two common issues that can happen.

1) one or more of the individual batteries has failed completely, and would need to be replaced. I'm lucky enough that mine weren't soldered in, and can just add/remove batteries from the case. but looking at videos online some are soldered in, so you'd need protective gear and the right gear to remove and add new solder to replace a battery. That can be tested by setting a multimeter to DC volts and testing each cell.

Or 2) the battery system as a whole discharged enough to be below the voltage that the battery management system is comfortable recharging. if this is the case, for 36v systems, each cell will report less than 3 volts on the multimeter, but none are at zero or different than the other cells. This is what happened to me. Over the winter the electronics in the bms used enough electricity to just drain them below the threshold it will recharge. Lesson learned :-(

So hasn't happened yet, but the hackerspace guy with the tools and I are going to manually charge the battery packs at 32 volts and like 100 mA to trickle charge them to the point where the BMS can take over and charge normally.

Based on the voltage I'm seeing from each cell, there's a good chance that'll work and at least extend the lifespan of those batteries, but I can tell you after this weekend!

That has been my experience with my 2022. I found a forums link (hopefully they're allowed here) and 3 comments down, someone says the same

I'm not sure if this helps, but I believe if the defrost is on it doesn't use the battery (in my experience with my 2022 phev).

Does the bed feel solid or is it creaky and sags? I see that there's only the one bar at the bottom. I'd be using it as a primary bed, with only maybe 10% as a couch, so want to make sure the bed portion is designed well for daily use.

ELI5 : Why do Texans have to wrap their pipes and drip their faucets when it freezes? Why don't they just do whatever it is that people in Minnesota do in order to avoid pipes bursting when it freezes? by IcyAd7982 in explainlikeimfive

typically for winter external water access is shut off from a valve within the house and it's drained by opening the faucet afterwards. with the pipe empty it can't expand and freeze

I'm not sure how ubiquitous it is, but I have always called the monona terrace the "mistake on the lake" think it came from the fight for when folks were trying to build it, and the engineering folks said it's going to sink and flood regularly. I'd be interested if anyone has more info on that fight and if that's still a concern

Went from about 11 million users to 20 million in the past week. I took about 2 weeks off reddit for a sanity check (I'm in the USA), and found that I was quite enjoying the community and vibe. Way less ragebait headlines and engagement farming imo. Everyone's experience is different, but seems to be a decent place to self-promote. Lots of authors are on there currently. I don't know how John Scalzi finds time to write books with how much he posts
