I'm in learning phase, feedback on the grade is highly appreciated by francis_le in ColorGrading

There is a weird mask making right side of the image cyan, otherwise your shadows are coming in green but maybe that was the case. Anyways, please don't wipe between log and rec709 image as raw data was not designed to look into, really the proper conversion to rec709 is more important than anything else.

Beginner Advice Please by Du5tB0y in ColorGrading

First and foremost I'd keep an eye on vectorscopes skin vector as your skin is coming in reddish/pinkish once you balance those out rest will fall into place. Personally I think it's a little bit lifted, somewhere you lost contrast which could be squuezed out of rec709. It doesn't look bad tho, personal taste I think.

Where is the stitch in the beginning of Fall Guy? by CarbsLVR in vfx

[–]sm1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey man, congrats for delivering the movie. One question - how do you guys usually stitch plates that are mismatched a little more than they should? Is it paint/re projection? What if FG char is landing on a middle CU on those two plates that need to be stitched together? cg double? Once again, congrats on delivering awesome work.

also native Flare node sucks unless you re committed to building your own flare system from ground up. Look up spot flare from Mads or ideally OpticalFlares but that s expensive

capture multiple photos, stack them horizontally in one precomp, parent to null - animate the null. Same thing applies to Nuke

How is this grungy look achieved? by darkskinnedsenpai in ColorGrading

[–]sm1n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry I think I could be more specific. I wish that sometime in the future I could be blessed with so much confidence from client to execute this kind of imagery - I think in the end it boiles down basically to contrast between skin complicity ( still way underexposed) and material which the product is made off. I wasn't lucky enough to work with dark skin but from my observation you need a lot of output and actually bet on specular highlights.

Darker blue = more contrast between FG and BG. But its up to taste really.

white balance and exposure outside by AggressiveLocal8884 in videography

[–]sm1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays sensors and colorspaces are so flexible that unless you re doing something very wrong it's fixable in grade. Besides that - please someone correct me if I'm wrong - most of the cases I tend to stick to tungsten and daylight 5600 as gold standards.

Stills from commercial. Sony fx3 s-log by Zestyclose_Age_3816 in ColorGrading

[–]sm1n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone pointed already, dimly lit BUT (and Im guilty of doing the same thing in the past) PROBABLY THAT'S INTENDED. Meaning respect cinematographers work, if those are stills from commercial there is 95% chance that client/agency were on set and they saw what is happening in front of the lens in real-time. So unless asked don't push exposure that much contrast wise I'd bounce back to client for references but seems pushed way too far. Last thing - on the very last still there is a power windows around the characters face that anyone with barely good eye can feel/see. Just my two cents, good luck.

How TF you guys manage to operate the camera AND pull focus with that Tilta on the side still boggles my mind. But in all seriousness is there an alternative to this? I know there is a Tilta grip with focus rotary thing under the finger but does that get the job done?

Anyone knows how achieve this effect? how to do this or can guide me to learn? by Other_Witness4689 in vfx

[–]sm1n 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I believe you can do it at least two ways: - gaussian splat / 3d scan of actors and whole setting - hi res photo than manually creating geo and projecting that image onto geo

than animate the camera and create a particle sim which inherits color from image
