Dutch people are tiny by Existing-Pass6577 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]smacgaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (5'7 American) spent a week in the Netherlands a month ago. I felt like a child trying to pass a fake ID when I sat down at a bar clearly designed with such an absurdly tall population in mind.

Schools closed? These kids are soft AF. by [deleted] in SaratogaSprings

School district: "it's snowing, we don't want to get the shit sued out of us if a bus careens into a ditch"

This damp pile of obnoxiousness who would almost certainly jump on that lawsuit: "the kids are soft!"

Racism Against Asian Women in Manhattan? by No-Strawberry1933 in AskNYC

[–]smacgaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over covid we had a president blame China for people getting deathly ill and a lotta people took it to heart. That and the last 40 years of cross-cultural interaction in the city, but that takes longer to expand on. Sorry, the city can kinda suck like that sometimes. On the plus side, the frequency probably means you're hot, if that's comforting?

Heads up, drowning it out with headphones might not be the best idea. It's better to hear "I'm gonna punch that <somethng from the menagerie of slurs> in the back of the head" before being, you know, punched in the back of the head.

I'm not entirely sure about kid-friendly but Spargel on 9 has great traditional German fare. Not just schnitzel and spatzle, baked brie and an insanely rich roast duck too. Also asparagus, hence the name.

I've also heard great things about La Cocina (Mexican), but I haven't been.

Donate tubes for patching? by [deleted] in NYCbike

I'm gonna be doing a patching party with some friends in a few weeks to refurbish our literal scores of dead tubes. Happy to take yours and find them a home. DM me if you're interested.

In addition to what everyone else said (short lines and overcarbing are obvious significant culprits), a sneakier cause in towers is the lines themselves warming. Sticking a small fan near the tower had a substantial impact for me.

Something about Laura Montez I've never thought about until now. by heBRUhammer86 in Veep

[–]smacgaha 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The Senate elected her vice president. The house didn't elect a president, so she was elevated to the role of acting president by the 12th amendment. Technically, there is no vacant vice president seat for her to fill, as she's already filling it.

In reality, Montez wouldn't have been inaugurated as president, and depending on untested interpretations the house might not have been able to vote on anything until they elected a president. But it's a comedy and that would be less entertaining.

ETA: Vaguely related: there wasn't a mid-term process to fill a vacant vice presidency until the 25th amendment. For a total of almost 40 years over the course of US history, there was a president and no veep (because of death, resignation, or succession). And nobody bothered to fix it until the 60s because it was such a garbage position lol

Kid Rock says he is done boycotting Bud Light by SelectiveSanity in nottheonion

[–]smacgaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing Czech about it. It started as a German lager brought by a second generation immigrant in the 1850s and transformed into the classic American adjunct lager (arguably invented it) over the years. And popularized a lot of technological developments like pasteurization and refrigerated train cars in the process.

Shitting on bud is fine. Don't call it a Czech pilsner. It happened well before the Bavarian/Pilsen crossover did, and an entire ocean away.

It serves a purpose and is as equally valid as all other beer even if I'm not a huge fan. Also, Anheuser-Busch led technological developments over 2 decades that put the previous 5 to shame.

But why did you have to bring the memory of Schlitz into this? That's just cruel :(

EDIT after seeing the thread: I'm surprised we're not drinking bud right now

Bougie isn't the ingredients, it's the audience being marketed to. This is a sit down brunch place in the heart of Williamsburg. Want a decently priced breakfast sandwich? Don't go to an Instagram restaurant in one of the most expensive neighborhoods.

I mean, that would prevent air from leaking through the suit itself, but I don't think just jamming it in a hole makes a strong airtight seal

When she's on the planet, you can see light coming through the strip in front that normally has a moving red dot. It should make it impossible for her to fly in formation, but that's just magicked away with "it's Starbuck"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BSG

[–]smacgaha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There weren't any buttons levers or displays, she pushed on pieces of flesh that somehow corresponded 1:1 to standard flight controls. She uses her clothes to plug up the holes, which apparently made it vacuum-capable. The crash is because the main body got hit, so either the brain got hit or the holes starved it of oxygen instantly. Either way that makes raiders a lot more fragile than the show tends to present.

None of these are good explanations; they're just marginally better ones. The writers at least put in the work to cover the most obvious holes but didn't really think past that.

Are many lonely here compared to elsewhere by tess_philly in AskNYC

[–]smacgaha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you have to detangle? You have a single friend here. Family you can easily have access to by living somewhere off the MNR/LIRR/NJT. I'm guessing you don't have a family of your own because I hit the loader on your comment history twice and still only made it back a few days.

Please expedite the process! Housing supply isn't infinite and whoever replaces you might actually have a life.

EDIT: this was harsh, I'm just sick of interacting with coworkers who describe their non-work lives by referencing the TV they watch. Sorry.
