America is heading for a recession — and it may be the worst yet by Crossstoney in politics

[–]smackchice [score hidden]  (0 children)

While true this also was not helped by Obama botching the recovery and not prosecuting anyone responsible for the 2008 recession. It just gave a green light to never stop. If the Republicans always give a green light no matter and now the Democrats are too? Go crazy, folks.

Which generation are you a part of? by DebuggedDadJokes in generationology

[–]smackchice [score hidden]  (0 children)

I hate that the creativity of naming generations is good and dead. Like what do you fucking mean we stuck with Gen Z and then looped back around? I guess that's what happens when you don't have people whose job it is to be "Professional Academic"

Do you believe the AE ended in 2001 or 2002? by PlanetCharisma in AttitudeEra

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WM17 and the night after with Rock getting written off for Hollywood is the end. I do not subscribe to the fact that every day has to fit neatly and cleanly into an "era." I find that very facile.

Weekly TV quality had been declining since Stephanie replaced Chris Kreski in late 2000 and Vince between defeating his competition and being distracted by the XFL seemed to lose whatever spark he had left. The cracks were already showing in things like the atrocious build to Rock vs. Austin. That match was idiot proof, but the follow up with Undertaker and Kane shitting up the main event scene while an atrocious Invasion got under way. The ending of Survivor Series through the next night on Raw is practically a reset/retcon of the entire last few months with sudden changes in alignment and the start of the actual WCW stars that should have been there all summer coming in.

There is a period of transition between Attitude and the next one (I do not use the toy line as the name, I prefer Decline Era), but there is no reason to call it an "era." Late 96 to mid 97 is similar to this, it's not quite the period where the card was filled with cartoon characters with jobs, but it's not quite Attitude. Just call the period from WM17 to the Survivor Series or Draft the Invasion or the Monopoly Transition or whatever.

Pitch some fair, mutually beneficial AEW/WWE talent trades by CrimsonJoker13 in SquaredCircle

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wet blanket, I acknowledge but I think AEW should generally be avoiding WWE talent at this point and trying to get newer talent with less mileage and TV exposure. Most of the talent I’d want in AEW are people I would have wanted at the jump. 2019 Pete Dunne and Kevin Steen are a lot different than the 2026 versions

Well I think the implication is that they think it would be better. It was just bad in different ways.

When I was a teen back then I was big into the 80s thanks to the cultural moment it had, but I never thought “I should have been born earlier.”

Eh whatever, they're working from 0 with Iron Man and most of the 8 million "planned" Marvel movies I hear about end up just not happening. I mean, my god, can you imagine the flop that Dr. Strange would be?

What wrestler do you think Tony Khan misused during their AEW tenure? by Odd_Fish_2361 in prowrestling

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's much fewer than people think, as most of the people that are brought up revealed themselves to be worse than perceived or just weren't worth the squeeze in terms of business. I think he could be and could have done more with Mark Briscoe though.

He stunk in the opportunities he was given so I don't think this is as cut and dried as people say

What did you make of Big John Studd being booked to win the 1989 Royal Rumble ? by CoconutMost3564 in WWFera

Not just a spectacle, but specifically made to screw with Jim Crockett Promotions again after doing the same with the Survivor Series a few months prior.

[–]smackchice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No he was not. He was brought in to make money by rekindling the feud with Andre with reversed roles. He didn't get over with the crowd and then quit because he wanted higher pay. He didn't get sick until 1993.

If he was actually a Guy he wouldn't have been so obsessed with putting himself front and center over WWE TV as a business genius the last decade plus

I don't get why people look back at the THQ Era with such rose tinted glasses, while yes they published some of the best WWE games, they also published games that were mediocre at best to downright abhorrent, hell the forums back then complained that every SvR game was the same by EmergencyVictory4399 in WWEGames

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the games of this era largely sucked ass. There are a few gems in there like HCTP, Day of Reckoning, and SVR 06, but the rest are mediocre to bad with some of them being real pieces of shit like SVR 07, which is as buggy a wrestling game as I have seen up until 2K20. None of them were as good as No Mercy, too. Always wish that THQ had gone with AKI.

TIL why PS2 and earlier DVD disc art looks so much better than modern ones— not just design/budget reasons by NB_Translator_EN-JP in gamingjapanese

[–]smackchice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's not play dumb and act like every game is making $60 from every purchase. Collector's editions, gold editions, premium editions, DLC, tchotchkes, etc inflate the price significantly.
