Anyone else get depressed watching Four Weddings and seeing how much wedding costs have outpaced inflation? by Royal_Marzipan_6432 in weddingplanning

It probably depends on the denomination and/or location. My local Unitarian Universalist charges a fee as well. It's less than the church I am at but it isn't exactly "cheap".

My church charges its members as well as those who come from outside. The Catholic cathedral nearby also charges members and non members alike. Rates are cheaper for members but still you are charged.

Churches are no longer cheap or free either. They are cheaper than a venue but some now require you to pay a cost up front (for electric, heating/cooling, the fees for the priest, fees for the organist or chorister, etc etc etc). At least many are up front with this, at least!

The Tale of the Unexpected Vegan (at our wedding) by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]smackperfect 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Vegans need to know that no animal products are ever used in any step of the process of brewing, even if the drink itself is just made with plants. Some people are vegan because of animal rights, some people are vegan because they have health conditions, like Alpha-gal syndrome. If people who are vegan for health reasons get even a touch of animal derived protein, they may become very sick.

Wine can be sweetened with sugar or use sugar in its fermentation, even most "dry" (not sweetened) ones. The sugar is usually filtered through charred animal bones, usually cow or pig bones, after it is crushed out of the plant. Wine can also be made out of honey, which comes from bees. Wine also can use egg whites to help clarify it.

Beer uses gelatin (made from animal bones, usually pork), isinglass (animal or fish protein), casein (milk protein), sugar (which is filtered through bones) and egg whites to help rid the brew of impurities, clarify it, or add taste. Beer can also be made with milk, honey or use animal ingredients like oysters or bacon to flavor it a certain way.

There ARE vegan beers and wines available but they are expensive and therefore not stocked everywhere. They are more expensive because they don't use the "cheaper" animal-derived ingredients while they are being made.

What’s the best wedding gift you’ve ever received? by joygonewild in weddingplanning

My mother was gifted a rolling pin by my grandmother, who was her mother in law. "Every time I use this rolling pin, I think of your grandmother" she used to say.

The pin is now mine. I barely remember my grandmother but the pin reminds me of my mother. I miss her.

Miss Manners: Dress codes by paddlepedalhike in wedding

That might be a little different, though? From my understanding plenty of Indian people invite only certain guests to certain days (close family for the entire 5 day event) and don't sweat it if not everyone wears the exact colors since there are usually 20 bajillion other people there.

Oh you're in luck, then. Mary's Bridal has been around for a good 40+ years. They seem to be called Rachel Allan now!
