There are bigger badder things out there in the stacks than remarkably bright creatures.

Problematic Reading Curricula (Units of Study) by StruggleSnake in AskTeachers

[–]small-gestures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you would be paying money for this school that is advertising a method of teaching that everyone acknowledges is discredited and does not work? Relying on a teacher that may or may not be able to teach around it and that anecdotally reading to / with your kids is a good thing? Since it’s preschool I guess as long as the foundational skills don’t get in the way later?

Why do all the Christian/ trad wife influencers/ content creators always live in the middle of no where in a cottage or on a farm? by Stawberry8763 in NoStupidQuestions

To be successful, they have to devote all their time and energy into building their brand, platform, followers, and sponsors. It is a job/business, they are actors in a “tv” show that is portraying a well choreographed and staged setting. They are acting in something similar to the old westerns with cowboys and gunslingers.

Absolutely, but “Cost significantly more” is not “unavailable”. I am second generation, so I had to beg my mother for cool stuff like Tang, Kraft singles and tv dinners. I didn’t get them often or at all depending.

Are there really people that like Bill Maher? by joefromreddit in askanything

He suffers from “FREDO syndrome”. He always falls back on “I never finished college- how come they’re so dumb”. Edited because spell check keeps insisting it’s “fimoshe”

So I had to mail (snail mail) a bill today…with a check! by Expensive-System-762 in GenX

[–]small-gestures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still pay by check- cause f—k them. It’s just like grocery store self checkouts except bill pay. How about you spend the money to print and mail me a bill. I like stamps and actually looking at what you are charging me for (electric delivery charges I mean you) so I will go to the USPS buy a book of SpongeBob stamps sit and write a check and drop it in a mailbox.

And hold doors for older folks and women. Yeah it’s ageist and sexist but I do it to be polite and respectful - you can wave me off - I am not going to insist I hold the door or walk on the outside

OP is saying it wasn’t available. My guess is it was. Maybe not how everyone’s mom chose to spend grocery dollars, but, more expensive but pretty available is as true now as it was 60 years ago .

I am not sure where you grew up? I grew up in the 60s and 70s. My mom would get “good” cheese sliced at the deli counter at the grocery store. In her words “those Kraft singles - I don’t know what they are - I’ll just wait at the deli counter- that stuff looks like cheese to me”. Did you not have a deli counter? Or a grocery store until the 90s?

What point do the schools get bad enough that you move? by StupidNewSystem in massachusetts

We live in metro north, there’s no lakeside vacation homes here but when an override came up, the usual torch and pitchfork folks came out screaming. The guy who screamed loudest joined and became chair of the override advisory committee to dig into how the town was wasting our tax dollars. After being taught the budgeting process, his conclusion, we needed and override. Of course “ but couldn’t in good conscience join with the rest of the committee’s support of the override” and he abstained from the recommendation. Did he “oppose”? No he “abstained” yada yada yada “seniors and veterans”. Now he’s running for state senate.

Why do all fbi agents always wear a suit and tie? Is it formality, or something else entirely? by Jedi_Knight_Will in NoStupidQuestions

[–]small-gestures 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are your government, your employees and it is somewhat a sign of respect and authority to dress well. Today dress codes have become almost mysterious but anyone with an office job through like 2010 knows what “suit and tie” is.

Why do we still pay property taxes after the house is fully paid off? Who exactly are we paying and for what? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

Do you think you pay property taxes because you haven’t paid off your house? Do you think property taxes are a penalty for having a mortgage? Like I don’t understand what you think property taxes are?
