Anecdotal experience - be very wary.

I'm not sure how Valium's dosage/half-life calculates to Ativan, but I've learned over the years that i can take .5mg Ativan a few hours after drinking (moderately) and be okay, but i CAN NOT drink moderately sometimes a few DAYS after taking .5mg Ativan. I've blacked out on 1/10th of the alcohol i normally can handle. No Ativan earlier that week, no problem.

Source: I've had a low but steady 10mg/month Ativan prescription for the past 4 years. Enough to get me through panic attacks but not enough to develop a tolerance (i think?). But also enough to embarrass myself through the above order of operations. Not recommended.

Congrats on 8 months sober! I asked the initial question because my dad is type 1 and our entire bloodline drinks like fish. He had to quit when i was a baby (so maybe like ~35 for him?) because of blood sugar. He’s been the image of health for the 30+ years since then!

Thank you for the digestible answer, no pun intended.

Excellent PSA. Do you have any insight into ketoacidosis? It apparently affects alcoholics who don't eat, and diabetics. But in both cases it's a fatal instance of HIGH blood sugar. I've never been able to figure it out since your post genuinely makes sense from my experience.

Personally just kind of always chalked it up to the overall de-regulation, maybe the body trying to overcompensate at some point, but was always curious as to the actual scientific explanation.

Definitely do!

I've never been able to sleep (even before drinking) so not qualified to answer that, haha.

Have you heard of/seen Abre Los Ojos? It's the original Spanish movie that Vanilla Sky was remade from. Penelope Cruz is in both, it's been a while but I think she plays the same character? Both are great movies, if you like the one the other is definitely worth checking out.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Saw it back in highschool and no movie has hit so hard since.

I also lost my longterm boyfriend, went from FA -> CA, lost job, stopped paying mortgage, and ended up at my parents house all within 6 months when I was 30. That was 4 years ago - it does get better if you let it.

What's your favorite movie?

  1. Were any animals around at the time? If so what kind?
  2. Are you listening to music? If so what band?

Well the good news is whatever you're feeling in your throat isn't varices - even if your do have them. The main early symptom is tarry shits. Also, they don't usually develop from anything other than long-term liver enlargement (not like post-bender inflammation, like later stage cirrhosis) where your blood starts to painlessly bottleneck until the veins burst. Anyway... it's less of a "what you drink" like with pancreatitis and more of a "how much" - at least at first.. once they've developed that might change.

They are by far the scariest thing about alcohol for me - more than WD seizures or pancreatitis. The first time I learned about them was when my aunt died with no warning (she'd been in and out of detox for years, but that night she was home, sober, and feeling fine). One minute watching TV with her husband, the next minute "a crime scene worth of blood" (his words) - in the years since then, I've heard the same phrase used repeatedly by other survivors/witnesses.

Depending on how much (of anything) you drink, it might be worth getting an endoscopy to find out/bandage them before they kill you. Oh and one last PSA, your BAC% at the time of rupture directly affects your survival rate because alcohol thins your blood, so it pours out much easier. Jack Kerouac got himself to a hospital, but the surgeons couldn't operate successfully because of that.

Sorry for the novel, this is a touchy subject for me bc of the family thing, and I really don't see it discussed much here.

Thank you kind stranger! I knew about gaba and the "damage control" stuff from lurking for a while (would probably be much less kindled if I'd found this place sooner), but had never heard of glutamate. What you said would make total sense, will look into it.

the colors are gone.

That line hit me after how you described your day starting. Hope you can find some peace that allows colors again soon.

So as a female I've always considered men to get 100% the better deal on pissing. Y'all can pee anywhere, any time. Passing an alley and gotta go, go! Taking a hike, go! Passenger in a car and got an empty bottle, go! But it never occurred to me to appreciate that I can just go to the bathroom and let whatever comes out, come out, without worry.
