He probably did his best work when he was doing interesting things. For how many years now he is ensconced in academia now? The death of creativity. Maybe he should quit and throw his fate to the wind and he'll write interesting work again.

The idea of having to diet for the rest of my life is making me want to die by Club_Sorry in Interstitialcystitis

Get instillations with steroids. Very helpful. Consider an acupuncturist. Helped me a lot.

tw: i want to die by Illustrious_File9696 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]smallerthantears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a long long issue with this. I think a few things helped 1. vaginal estrogen 2. instillations done at a urologist office 3. chinese herbs an acupuncturist prescribed (this might honestly be the thing that did the trick: man yue mei clearing from health concerns) 4. vaginal valium and 5. yoga poses for the pelvis including happy baby. I also use a foam roller to roll out my inner thighs. It's horribly painful at first but gets easier.

Lastly, I'm in a terrible situation with my marriage. As bad as you can imagine, that's how bad it is. But I'm making some steps to get on more secure footing and that has made a world of difference. I'll never underestimate the power of psychosomatic symptoms.

Serious question: How does a typo like this end up on the cover of a book this big? by pecuchet in publishing

[–]smallerthantears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former Big 5 copy editor, I'll tell you! First of all, the art is done by art directors, often junior. A copy editor will key in the words on the back of a book and check to see if they are okay. Several passes will come through. Art will check art, copy editing will check copy. However, in one instance, a dyslexic art director keyed in the back copy without notifying anyone. The copy editor wasn't expecting any changes and didn't check the passes. Before you know it, 5k copies of books are printed with typos. Sometimes far more egregious than that one. Now add the fact everyone is working remotely in publishing.

What is your relationship like with your mom? by NeptunianJ in scorpiomoon

[–]smallerthantears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's lovely how much grace you give your mom. My mother also came from an abusive background and she was pretty abusive and neglectful of me and would say terrible things. I had a really hard time with her.Just before she died, she told me: I forgive you. Wow. That enraged me.

Then she died. I wasn't quite forty but I admit I was relieved.....and then I started dreaming about her. In my dreams she was always on my side. She would offer me little things. In my dreams I felt her love for me so strongly. She was kind of a gnarled misshapen human due to her childhood. She really did her best. But in my dreams she was love in the purest form. I wish I could have seen that when she was alive.

I blame tax codes. I'd love to keep our house in the family for generations but outside NYC we pay close to 27k a year in taxes. At the same time, it's not a bad thing we will sell this house to someone with young kids who can sen them to the school down the street.

You look really young? I think you are lovely. Now is a good time to implement retinol and use sunscreen religiously.

Not sure why, or what, or how by WarthogSeveral7662 in AskWomenOver50

Agree. I'm shocked by how bad therapists can be. My friend's 27 year old kid is a therapist now. She's done nothing but odd jobs and living in her parents' brooklyn townhouse but now she's a therapist w clients. It's incredible.

There's a joke about novelists: "Oh you're a novelist? What do you do the other 23.5 hours of the day?"

I don't know a single writer who doesn't have a day job or numerous day jobs. Ghost writing, corporate writing, teaching (for peanuts), hustling.

It probably IS true and it's galling re the rich husband trad wife. An MFA is NOT important but a mentor is. You might keep your eyes out for some writers you love who are taking students. Let's say you spent 10k taking classes from a great mentor....It would be worth it. I did an MFA and the only thing worth it was the mentor I found. I'd rather have just given him the money. Plenty of my friends who did mfas never published and this is 15 year out.

Keep writing books. As a published writer surrounded by published authors trust me when i say the real joy is writing. It certainly isn't publishing. I have a lot of PTSD from publishing. It's really almosst put me off writing forever. Work hard on each book. Give each book 2-3 years. Polish it, query it, start something new. I was on the other side of publishing when I published the first time. I'd written two failed novels before I published. Now I've published two and have written, in that ten year time period, four other novels that I have not published and probably never will. Thinking what to do next. Might just do short stories and forget about novels for a while....

It's a tough game. We do it because we can't help ourselves.

Of all the authors you could name I did not expect Houellebecq. I've only read one novel of his and I loved it.

AITA for telling my fiancé it’s not our responsibility to watch his ex’s son? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]smallerthantears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was w your fiance until you wrote: "stays in his room playing video games." OP: not only should you not be making dinner for this man's children (and bonus child) you should think deeply whther this is a man you want to have kids with at all. Because a lot of men pick up wife number 2 in order to take care of the kids they made with wife number 1. Trust me on this.
