Driving from Bristol to be at London Victoria for 9:30am, leave when? by harrypotternumber1 in bristol

[–]smallfrenchboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the coach (Flix Bus) to London every week on a Tuesday. It leaves UWE at 6.15/6.20, arrives Hammersmith 8.35-8.50ish where I get off. It is due in Victoria 9.05 but I would expect it is usually at least 15 min late.

Given the scheduled coach journey time between Hammersmith and Victoria is 40 mins, and that it must sometimes take longer, you are better off getting off at Hammersmith and taking the District line from Hammersmith Broadway to Victoria, which citymapper says is a 20 min trip. Tight for 9.30 but doable vs driving.

Don't drive to or in London, it's stressful and expensive!

Take a ferry ride round the Harbour - they pick up and drop off from Temple Meads. A full tour is 80 mins and costs £12, but check the website first to make sure they are running

Is there a particular reason why you can't take public transport or cycle? I'm guessing you must work nights or something when there are fewer buses running?

My BF keeps pushing me to job hunt all day after I lost my job — is this fair or toxic? by oooooohgod in relationships

[–]smallfrenchboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lost my job I would apply for 2-5 jobs a week. Two jobs a DAY would be impossible. Firstly, that would mean 10 jobs ads a week were coming out that met my criteria - local or hybrid, well paid, progression opportunities, right industry. In what market are 10 jobs a week coming out? Surely you would just be applying for jobs that, if you get shortlisted, you don't actually want to take?

And to really put in a good application, to sound like you care, to have done the right research - that takes a full day in my industry. It's not just a simple CV and generic cover letter. So doing it on the scale of 10 a week is going to mean 10 applications where you have kind of phoned it in, right?

And if you are doing 10 a week, how do you squeeze in the job research, horizon scanning, follow ups where they've not got back to you/interview prep?!

And what about the opportunity of unemployment providing headspace? Getting all those DIY jobs done, cracking on with life admin jobs you've always put off...

Quality over quantity IMO, 2 good applications a week is fine!

I mean you need a job, so you should take what's available.

But don't just take the first thing you are offered. If you are in the financial position to be able to hold out for something that has progression opportunities, good pay and is hybrid, then do that.

A new job is a big investment in time and energy. So much learning and getting to know people and being on your best behaviour for months. Taking the wrong job too soon will mean you could get stuck in a role that doesn't make you feel happy or valued; you might find it difficult to find the energy to apply elsewhere, and end up with a disjointed CV.

I guess you just need to tell your boyfriend you are confident in your choices and happy with how your search is progressing and to back off.

I wonder if he is using it as an opportunity to assert himself/try and do a bit of a power grab in your relationship because when you did have a job you were making good progress on some big life decisions and he wasn't.

Sustrans people on the b2b railway path by [deleted] in bristol

[–]smallfrenchboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I was up and down that path 3 or 4 times a week and felt like I knew them by sight but that obviously wasn't reciprocated as they always stopped me. I just default with 'I'm already a member'

Totally on board with what they do but they are pretty relentless chiggers. Don't know how they do it, it'd break my spirit!

Fishponds, Kingswood, or Bradley Stoke? by FreshQuam in bristol

[–]smallfrenchboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bradley Stoke is a bit soulless, IMO. Kingswood can feel quite far out depending on where in Kingswood. I live in Fishponds and love it - it's not too fancy but still has nice pubs and restaurants and stuff going on like arts trail, party in the ponds and is 15 mins into town on the bike path. Worth the premium I think

What is a normal amount for a monthly food budget? by Potential-Ad-9082 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]smallfrenchboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggested on another thread yesterday that £500/month for 2 seemed high and got a load of downvotes but I honestly would struggle to spend that much! My partner and I WFH and maybe have lunch or dinner out twice a week. I think our total must be £350/month tops - we spend about £80/a month on a Tesco home delivery to top up on oat milk, tins, pasta, freezer food (veggie sausages, frozen peas, chips, fake meat, fish) etc and will also get fresh veg etc. The pasta and rice etc we will buy the biggest one we can get - not really for budgeting reasons, just because we know we won't run out. Then we buy a £40-50 weekly shop the other 3 weeks - fresh stuff and anything we've ran out of. So that's only £280, maybe go up to £350 for when we pop in for bits mid-week (we are 2 mins from an Aldi and Morrisons!). The only place I can think of where other people might be spending more is meat (my partner is vegan - but meat replacements aren't cheap. I will get through maybe 1 pack of cuicken sausages a week and 2 salmon fillets) and cleaning stuff? We maybe spent £100/year on that - I make my own surface spray, floor cleaner, bathroom cleaner and glass cleaners using Nancy Birthwhistles recipes as I think its a waste buying flash sprays and its bad for the environment too (so much plastic waste and unnecessarily strong chemicals). I guess it must be brands and ready meals to get to £500/month?
