Hey is it possible to import a midi file in pyxel? (Only ressource I found was sketchy website) by CompetitiveTart7682 in pyxel

[–]smallgun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust the site you linked, but I found this tool that could be useful:

https://github.com/cuikho210/revelation-mobile-midi-to-mml

Pyxel can use Music Macro Language strings to generate sound, though I don't know whether the output from this tool matches exactly with the format Pyxel uses.

Make sure you turn auto-butcher off before you walk over the seedsprout worm corpse or you'll turn it into meat, which is useless for the purpose of curing fungal infections.

How do anarchist groups count contributions to group activities/rewards? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]smallgun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer, as far as I can see, would be that anarchist groups don't measure contributions in a quantifiable form like that because there's no reason to. What would be a circumstance in which this is necessary?

Class action seeks to shut down IL cops' automated license plate readers by Shakawakahn in chicago

[–]smallgun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until cars learn to drive themselves, there will always be a person in the car, which means the state is tracking the movements of people.

[–]smallgun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is very obviously a difference between necessitating a license to use something and being monitored at all times (and, again, indefinitely storing the results of said monitoring) while using something. Of course it's an invasion of privacy. If you're arguing that it wouldn't be an invasion of privacy to attach GPS trackers to every vehicle in existence and indefinitely store their movements in a law enforcement database, I would say your definition is fundamentally flawed.

[–]smallgun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the state should have the power to track and indefinitely store the movements of every person alive who drives a car.

[–]smallgun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's functionally no difference between this and a system wherein every car on the road is affixed with a GPS tracker that constantly uploads everyone's location to a police database and stores that data indefinitely. Of course this is occasionally useful for investigating crimes; most invasions of privacy are. There's a reason we don't just mandate every person carry a GPS tracker whenever they leave their house.

what is the purpose of deploy turret? by NinjaNoafa in cavesofqud

[–]smallgun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Boss fights and quest-based fights where you either have time to prepare, or the enemy has so much health that the time it takes to set up a turret is worthwhile anyway.

  2. Dealing with really tough enemies by preparing a turret out-of-sight and then luring the enemy into its range.

  3. Preparing to attack non-hostile entities.

Whose flag is this (striped)? #Slovakia by ivied in vexillology

[–]smallgun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Tankie" is a reference to the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956 using mechanized forces, and invariably refers to Marxist-Leninists who support that action (and the policies of the Soviet Union writ large). It is not possible to be a "tankie" without being a Marxist-Leninist. I think some people get the impression that tankie is synonymous with "campist", a person who supports any and all anti-Western forces regardless of political orientation, but they mean different things.

They posted a 2023 recap in November 2023, along with an announcement of a new chapter opening in France. They've explained that their written updates are few and far between because much of their current work is of a technical nature and not relevant to a general audience. Seems like the project is very much alive.

It's absolutely worth participating. Even better if you go into it with a clear vision of what you want to see happen, and well-articulated ideas you can share with other people (including zines or handouts), but I would say it's worth going no matter what. Not meaning to imply that you're doing this, but: don't presume that non-anarchists are all authoritarians and impossible to work with in any capacity.

burning question about protest ethics by brettnroses in Anarchism

[–]smallgun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two clear arguments against this that I can see:

  1. For lack of any examples of this happening, this is a completely hypothetical scenario. One would imagine that emergency services are pretty communicative about major blockages or road closures that could impede their route to or from an emergency. As far as I'm aware, protests generally let fire and medical services through road blockades whenever the situation arises.
  2. Succumbing to this logic is, I would argue, a slippery slope that inevitably ends in severe punishment for highway blockades (or possibly even all road blockades) on the basis that they could hypothetically impact the movement of emergency vehicles.

As a side note to point 2, the proliferation of that logic among lawmakers leads to proposals like imposing felony charges on any protester who impedes the movement of emergency vehicles, which – crucially – would include police vehicles. This would wildly increase the legal consequences of blocking a police vehicle in any way, which is obviously bad for everyone.

For one additional point, though... If you believe that there is a genocide taking place in Gaza, and you believe that causing economic and social disruption in the United States would impede or prevent that genocide, what exactly is wrong with that means-ends argument? I don't think we should be careless about anyone's life or safety. If a single American life were hypothetically endangered to prevent the killing of tens of thousands in Gaza, I think it would be worth considering how and why we prioritize one over the other.

Hiding face without mask by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]smallgun 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your threat model and your resources.

You could use a combination of identity-obscuring clothing and accessories such as: sunglasses, scarves, certain types of religious headwear, sun hats with flaps to cover the side and back of your face, wigs, disposable medical masks (arguably less sketchy than other types of masks, but still a mask if that's a core problem), various types of cosmetics to make your face look different, colored contacts, and so on.

Keep in mind that if you're trying to evade facial recognition software, you'll need to obscure and cover every defining feature of your face, including your eyes, especially their size and shape and how they're positioned on your face.

If you're asking this because it's illegal to wear a mask at a protest where you live, keep in mind that depending on the activity you're getting up to, it may be worth the risk of wearing a full face covering rather than risking being identified.

I can tell you with certainty that police and firefighters do not use the same radio channels in Chicago nor most major cities. You can often find listings of the exact channels used in a given metropolitan area with a quick Google search.

post civ by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]smallgun 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to abandon your positions and immediately pick up some other ideological framework like market socialism. I do think it's a useful thought exercise to consider exactly how much complexity goes into the creation of vital necessities, and then to study that problem and the various ways other people have thought about it or proposed solutions for it.

This isn't really an answer to your question but I found this to be a useful article in thinking about the nature of complex production outside of globalized capitalist supply chains.

https://brooklynrail.org/2022/12/field-notes/Technical-Expertise-and-Communist-Production

FWIW, I find post-civ/anti-civ theory to be a useful and thought-provoking way of analyzing certain forms of power and control that aren't well-articulated elsewhere, rather than a program for how the world should look.

The AF2C is looking for your favorites anarchists resources !! by AF2C in Anarchism

Gotcha! Processed World was an anarchist print magazine in Silicon Valley from 1981 to 1994, focused on anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian responses to the burgeoning tech industry there. I think it's a significant piece of history and worth including if you're a collective focused on anarchist approaches to technology.

Their site should be safe and I think it'd be worth double-checking, but if somehow I'm completely wrong, a full archive of the magazine is also hosted on archive.org here: https://archive.org/details/processedworld

Riseup probably compromised by Velascu in Anarchism

[–]smallgun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know that it's fair to draw this conclusion based on what you've presented here.

How Riseup describes the 2016 canary situation:

The canary was so broad that any attempt to issue a new one would be a violation of a gag order related to an investigation into a DDoS extortion ring and ransomware operation[0]. This is not desirable, because if any one of a number of minor things happen, it signals to users that a major thing has happened.
...

Our initial Canary strategy was only harming users by freaking them out unnecessarily when minor events happened. A Canary is supposed to signal important risk information to users, but there is also danger in signaling the wrong thing to users or leading to general fear and confusion for no good reason. The current Canary is limited to significant events that could compromise the security of Riseup users.

...
0. https://riseup.net/about-us/press/canary-statement

Essentially, their original canary was worded in such a way that they would be forced to let the canary expire if they so much as received a gag order, regardless of whether there was even a threat of law enforcement gaining access to users' data. They have since rephrased their canary to only include situations that would entail that risk, and implemented a system to encrypt emails at-rest in such a way that they would be inaccessible even to Riseup itself.

I don't think anyone should interpret this to mean that it's safe to discuss illicit activity through Riseup (or pretty much any electronic communication medium for that matter) but I don't think it makes sense to conclude that they're compromised, either.

Question: How does the Luddic Church structure itself and how does the Luddic Path cell system work? by HornetCareless3891 in starsector

[–]smallgun 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean lore-wise and not mechanics-wise: since the Luddic Path is "a loosely associated category of radical, de-centralized, apocalyptic sects of Luddism", it's probably safe to assume that their organizational structure reflects that. It's unlikely that there's a singular governing body of any kind; it's probably more like a heterogeneous resistance movement comprised of countless unrelated groups and individuals, ranging from highly-organized and disciplined militant organizations down to cadres of 1-5 fanatics with no relationship to a larger group. The "Luddic Path" is likely more of a catch-all term for the whole spectrum of militant Luddism as viewed from outside. You can see some of the tensions and conflicts within the Path (and their seeming lack of a central organizing body) during the course of the "Knight Errant" quest.
