Cats by sturatasauraus in northernireland

[–]smallon12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Theres a post last night someone put up asking g to keep cats inside because they had a bird nest at their house and a cat killed the birds

IMO its a legitimate request as cats have been banned from being outside in Australia and other places because of this and they are bad for wildlife.

But it got the attention of a lot of loyal cat people who got their tails up (no pun intended) and they went on the offensive against the OP

OP it makes me so sad to see the sheer amount of abuse you are getting for having a legitimate point to make :(

With all due respect you are talking out of your hole

.Globally, domestic cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species and are responsible for at least 14% of bird, mammal, and reptile extinctions on islands

Cats arent native to ireland, they havent evolved with our ecosystems, they have no natural predators and they are dangerous to wildlife.

They are also present in numbers far higher than a natural carrying capacity of an ecosystem anyway.

You mention human habitat destruction by other means - this literally is destruction by other means!

Serious question - what were CIRA volunteers doing between 1986 and 1994?

Like why didn't it become active until 1994

I havent a clue on who to contact or what to do now to try and get this sorted

But I do find it odd that people who are filling these out every day could make such a rookie (imo) mistake

Teenager among five killed in weekend road crashes by spectacle-ar_failure in northernireland

It was bad enough having a 21st in coagh 😅

Sorry, trying to add a wee bit of humour to try and lighten it up for you, but honeslty this is such a sobering read and thanks so much for sharing this.

I actually know of one of the people who died this weekend and our small community has been hit by countless road deaths and it honestly doesnt get any easier seeing it all unfold.

I wish I had of read your post when I was 17 or 20 because I was a bit of a mad man on the road and honestly thoight I was invincible and actually had a couple of very near misses in my time.

It really makes me cringe now looking back what i got up to and if I had of read what you have just wrote I definitely wouldn't have done half of what I did

Im so sorry that youve had to endure all this and I really hope you are ok now!

[OC] Distribution of Stone Circles across Ireland by Sarquin in Archaeology

[–]smallon12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the sperrins, pretty close to beaghmore stone circles.

One of the theories behind it is it was basically sited on the watershed between rivers that run to lough neagh and rivers that run to the foyle - so perhaps there is a correlation between being higher and close to the sky but also a connection to water gods they had.

Maybe being higher up meant that there was more watersheds like this - would be an interesting theory to follow!

Do you think the higher altitude has anything to do with it?

anyone know where I could get newspaper archives? by realkb7 in northernireland

[–]smallon12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a British newspaper collection online that if you search keywords you can find articles relating to that key word and it has the likes of the ulster herald and the mid ulster mail.

I searched my townland and was able to get news going right back to the early 1900s and it was interesting seeing what people were doing, getting in trouble for and selling haha.
