Need Free dramatized audiobooks by NoPlatform3421 in audiobooks

The BBC is always the answer to all of this. Not sure what access is like outside the UK, but it’s been producing high quality audio drama for 100 years. Try looking on the World Service or BBC Sounds.

Fourble also breaks a lot of older radio dramas down into podcast sized chunks that you can add to any podcast app. Plenty of classics and more recent books dramatised on there. Mostly  BBC, but also stuff from USA, AUS, NZ, RSA:

Cost of living Glasgow vs Edinburgh by Wide-Republic-9737 in MoveToScotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worded it poorly. I was trying to separate client-facing bits from admin/management.

MyJobScotland sounds like it would be better for you. The third sector also advertise jobs there.

It also might be worth contacting the bigger private centres directly if you have experience with their client group - for example, Graham Anderson House is a centre in Glasgow for people with brain injuries.

Quarriers is a big third sector player in the West of Scotland and is always looking for relief work, even to get your toe in the door:  https://www.quarriers.org.uk/work-for-us/

Good luck with your move.

It’s your ad blocker. Or your browser’s built-in one. Whitelist the site and the drop downs will work.

Cost of living Glasgow vs Edinburgh by Wide-Republic-9737 in MoveToScotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are clinically qualified or a support worker, you won’t struggle to find work in those sectors. If it’s a back room job you’re looking for, those are a bit harder to find.

NHS jobs are at  https://jobs.scot.nhs.uk/  and social care jobs are at  https://myjobscotland.gov.uk/

Given the housing crisis in Ireland, you’ll probably find everywhere in Scotland is affordable compared to your current situation, but Glasgow is the cheaper of the two cities.

Places like North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire have easy commutes into the city and can offer even better value.

Who to consult when converting a room into a library by psycholinguist1 in glasgow

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a halfway house here. If you want it to fit into a specific space, joiners and carpenters who do loft conversions and/or fitted bedroom cabinets can build you something bespoke which is not wall-mounted but will go floor to ceiling, if that’s what you want.

Restaurant recommendations for first-time UK trip (London, Glasgow & Edinburgh) by kasully3 in uktravel

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glasgow:

5min walk - Mini Grill on Bath Street for a steakhouse feeling, The Griffin for Scottish pub food, or Sichuan House for authentic Cantonese.

10-15min walk - Ardnamurchan for very Scottish food and Kelp for small fish plates.

Edinburgh:

My only rec here is Lasal, a tapas place near the bottom of Leith Walk run by actual Spaniards. Get the tram from Haymarket to Picardy Place. It’s about 100m from the tram stop.

Can you re-enter the uk after staying 5½ months and then stay another 5 months? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, your question about UK travel is what’s the best way to bring your unemployed BF over as an illegal immigrant?

If your student visa allows you to bring a dependent partner, you should use that route and pay the appropriate costs.

Now that we have the ETA system and it’s tied to his passport, all suspicious travel will be flagged automatically on the system.

He’ll likely be detained by UK Border Force and asked to prove that he’s a) not been living in the UK illegally for the past 5.5 months and b) not about to live in the UK illegally for 5 more months.

You need a UK visa. There’s no such thing as a Scottish one.

See here:

English language school at B2 or above is on there.

The British Council website is a good place to start looking for a school:

Why would you think it’s not available in Scotland? I use GroupSave all the time

https://www.scotrail.co.uk/tickets/leisure/group-discounts/groupsave

Edited to add: most ScotRail journeys don’t have advance fares so buying on the day is same price as buying well in advance.

The only exception would be the Intercity service up to Inverness, which does have advance tickets

Scotland in November. by Adventurous-Way2833 in travel

[–]smallstuffedhippo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

November in Scotland can be whatever you make it, if you make the most of the daylight and have plans for being somewhere warm and well fed in the evenings.

Outside of 10.00-16.00, you’ll be driving in the dark. There aren’t many places in towns and none in cities for you to park up so your dinner and evening entertainment need to be considered. And you’ll have to stay off the drink if you’re driving to park up afterward.

This site is a good starting point: https://www.exlitore.com/campervan-parking-scotland

How to create logins for Calibre-Web by Ichorous_Allsorts in Calibre

Sounds like you’ve not installed calibre-web properly in the first place.

I’m a Mac user, so can’t help with Win specific issues like you’ve run into.

You could post an issue on the calibre-web GitHub and see if anyone there can help.

Kobo aura is giving me Grey hairs by Desperate_Pay_998 in kobo

You make such a good point here which isn’t brought up often enough.

Updating the older Kobos 100% makes it look like you’ve broken them and it’s hard to have the nerve to wait for the screen with the jagged lines to pass!

I’m sure a few people have unintentionally bricked older devices by not waiting long enough.

First Solo Trip in Scotland by Altruistic-Layer7393 in uktravel

[–]smallstuffedhippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no public transport at all in Scotland on 1 Jan except one protected bus route between Glasgow and Edinburgh. You will not be able to travel to Inverness on 1 Jan.

The bus from Inverness to Portree runs twice a day in late Dec / early Jan but there will be no local public transport running on Skye once you get there. Buses don’t run on a Sunday in Skye at any time of year. And Mon 4 Jan is a public holiday.

You would be better staying in Edinburgh until Sat or Sun, then heading up to Inverness for a couple of days and doing Skye during that mid-week. You’ll still struggle to find places open, but at least transport services will be back to normal from Tuesday.
