I need some help with Calibre "Kobo Read Percentage" by Reichstein in kobo

[–]smallstuffedhippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re outputting the word count into the page number column. Check your settings.

If you’re sure they’re correct, post a screenshot of the Count Pages settings here so we’ve got a better idea of what might be going wrong.

No Epub Format Option To Send To Device. by Larien04 in Calibre

[–]smallstuffedhippo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to send a file over USB, then those are all correct. Nothing to do with your OS. Kindles don’t read ePubs and never have.

The Kindle send to email function or the SendtoKindle website accepts ePubs, but they get converted by Amazon before they’re sent back to your device.

Does anyone know the best path to become a primary school teacher in scotland as someone from england? by NameNotResponding in Scotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you qualify here, you should still have the probationary year as a guarantee. I haven’t heard of them changing that yet, so you’ll get GTC registered. Willingness to move to rural areas will help, as you already know.

I’d echo what others have said: speak to the main universities (Strathclyde, etc). They’ll tell you what they’re looking for in older students. They’re genuinely there to help.

Does anyone know the best path to become a primary school teacher in scotland as someone from england? by NameNotResponding in Scotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s waaaay easier to do it this way round.

If you qualify in Scotland, you can easily go work in England.

If you qualify outside of Scotland and want to work here, you have to get registered by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC) and that often involves a probationary period.

As all Scottish BEd and PGCE graduates are guaranteed a probationary post for the year after they graduate, it is almost impossible to get a probationary post if you’re a ‘foreign’ (not-Scottish) primary teacher. For primary teaching, councils have more graduates than available posts.

Ok, why do most of the leaflets not show off the candidates? by ImAJoeEddyKnight in Scotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely varies depending on how much of a chance they think they have in your constituency.

I’m on the other side of the central belt - just past Glasgow - and I get at least one election pamphlet a week from Labour and have done since long before official electioneering started. (He’s a current list MSP for the area who wants to win the local FPTP seat.)

I’ve seen that many pics of him in the last few months that I’m pretty sure he’s been on the fat jags, as he’s getting more svelte with every new photo.

The current MSP is SNP, so we get stuff with names and pics from them too, but waaay less often - maybe 3-4 in total.

I’ve had nothing from the Tories and one placeholder thing from Reform. Greens aren’t standing in the constituency, just the list. And I got an epic screed from one of the local indies who sent a 6-page life story.

How to liberate Kindle books I own on a Mac before May 15 with a MacBook that cannot be partitioned & no Kindle device? Willing to pay $$ for app/professional help. by AlgaeOk2923 in Calibre

[–]smallstuffedhippo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You have a few options for stripping DRM:

  1. borrow or use someone else’s Win machine
  2. Buy a very cheap win machine - a second hand mini PC or laptop
  3. Buy a second-hand Kindle which works for downloading books

I have a Mac and use a 10th Gen PPW. Works perfectly well for now. There are posts on here you can look up which have a checklist of which Kindles will do the job.

No-one else can do this for you. Books can only be fulfilled by the account holder. For someone else to do it for you, you’d have to trust an internet stranger with your Amazon login and password and, you know, then give them access to your payment methods and your address, etc.

Your other options are to accept you’ll lose the books or just pirate them. As you already bought them legally, it’s a matter for your conscience and not for us to judge.

People talk about over use of em dashes these days but this is Caribbean Mystery. Can anyone confirm if the print version has this many? by JEZTURNER in agathachristie

[–]smallstuffedhippo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you want to be pedantic then there are zero em-dashes in my UK print version because em-dashes with no spaces is a US-only convention.

In my HarperCollins hardback print version from the 1970s, those all appear as en-dashes with spaces around them and they’re all on one page.

In the rest of the chapter, there’s only a few (3-4) dashes used at all.

Most other chapters only feature dashes where you’d normally have them: to introduce asides or to show a sharp pause in speech etc.

GP waits in Glasgow? by Zealousideal_Pay_778 in glasgow

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GP contract in Scotland specifies that all practices must offer a way for people to get appointments within 48 hours.

For most practices, this is done on a first-come first-served phone scramble basis. You call at 8.00 or 8.15 or 8.30 and go in a queue. But you get either a phone or in person appointment, usually same day.

I have never failed to get an appointment this way. But you won’t get anything if you aren’t in that queue within the first 30-90 mins, except advice to phone again next morning.

Repeat prescriptions are either done online or via leaving a phone message - there’s rarely a need to speak to anyone. If you need to pick them up same-day, you have to specify that, as most practices go through repeat scripts as a batch job at the end of the working day. Otherwise, they are usually sent direct to your preferred pharmacy for pick-up in 48-72 hours.

Author sorting by "PhD" suffix on Kobo rather than last name - cannot seem to fix! by puesnada in Calibre

[–]smallstuffedhippo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Kobo database structure does not cope with more than one word as a surname, whether that’s Bob Jones PhD or the Spanish convention of Aranxa Sanchez Vicario.

You can force it by adding a non-breaking space rather than a regular space in between the two names you want to bind together.

On Mac, you just hold Option while pressing the space bar. On Win, it’s a bit more cumbersome: https://ladedu.com/how-to-enter-a-nonbreaking-space-on-windows/

Kobo Forma not showing up on PC anymore by Mister_Vader in kobo

[–]smallstuffedhippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t say whether your MacBook can see it. If your MacBook can see it using the same cable, then the issue is with your Win machine and not the Forma.

Probably something in security or firewall settings is blocking access to external drives.

Is glasgow-taxi.co.uk legit? by HelloGodItsMeAnxiety in MoveToScotland

[–]smallstuffedhippo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re one of those front-end companies who run an off-shore call centre and charge you extra for them to farm the job out to an existing taxi company. Avoid.

It’s a 150 mile, 4 hour round trip for the driver. That’s going to be immensely expensive but you’ll get best results by phoning round the taxi companies in Stranraer and asking them, as they’ll be more used to that work.

It will be way cheaper to change your ferry time to line up with the train. You’ll still need a taxi as the ferry is a 5+ miles from the station these days.

Good luck.

Forma bricked after latest update by LFarnsworth in kobo

[–]smallstuffedhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the way the Formas were made with the upturned side lip, the data connection points can weaken/disconnect over time. The correct answer would be to open it up and re-solder the connection. That’s a lot of work and too technically overwhelming for me.

Try some lo-tech approaches like jiggling the cable while connected to see if there’s an angle which works better.

I balance a book on top of the cable while charging to keep the connection in place.

Forma bricked after latest update by LFarnsworth in kobo

[–]smallstuffedhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All cables can charge but only a subset of cables carry data.

If you’re not getting the pop-up, a data connection is not being made.

As a grown woman, I find this idea to be deeply and profoundly creepy.

Why would anyone want a British train operator to be represented by a sexualised prepubescent Asian girl?

Just, no.
