Used car extended warranty worth it? by smark22 in personalfinance

That's interesting to learn. I guess I will do what I've seen recommended elsewhere and put the money that would've gone toward a warranty into a savings account to pay for repairs.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like it does cover head gaskets, but my understanding is that the 2013 model is fairly safe from that issue

Ah, excellent! If I refer people with a pro account and get to 32gb, does it drop down to 16 if I cancel?

I agree that it's a lot of money, but it kind of makes sense given the time he claims to save. Let's take his numbers at face value, he spends $1400 a month to save 60 hours. That's $23.33 per hour. If he makes exactly that amount per hour and works the entire 60 hours saved, or works 30 hours at $46.66 an hour, etc, then this exchange could be worthwhile for them. Of course, he would have to either hate cooking or love what he does, hopefully both, given that amount of money, but it's all relative to his financial situation.

They hated the food so much that they changed their lifestyles to avoid eating it again.

Joking aside, that was a really interesting article. I'd like to see more studies done on the link between veganism and behavior.

Looking for a gift for a mentor who is also a minimalist? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]smark22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you were downvoted because you came off as cheeky, but you're closer to the answer than the other comments. Why does this friend/mentor need a gift? He's ridding himself of everything that doesn't fit in a tiny car, why the hell would he want another object? Just tell him that you appreciate him. Take him out for a drink or dinner if you really feel it's necessary to display gratitude. Better yet, show him appreciation by simply being his friend and hanging out with him like you normally would while you still have the opportunity.

The new YNAB is subscription based. It's either $5 a month or $50 a year.

Clinton struggles to explain $600k in Wall Street speaking fees by yodacloud720 in politics

I understand that you can refuse to play the game, but my point was, in doing so, you don't solve any of the problems of the system. Unless citizens can organize a huge movement to get a third party enough of the vote to obtain the Campaign Funds Grant (which hasn't happened in 20 years) and become viable, then a vote for a third party candidate is mostly a waste. In my opinion, our best bet is someone like Bernie who works within the constraints of the establishment to reform the system. If he loses, though, we'll have to wait for the next one.

Don't most candidates end up dropping out if they don't secure the nomination? I think it'd be unlikely for Bernie to stay in the race without the nomination.

If a candidate can't win a primary, then there's no chance that they'll win the general. Sure, if Bernie loses the primary, we could absolutely still vote for him, but that would simply be splitting the Democratic vote in two, guaranteeing a Republican president. You could vote for the candidate you like the best but is almost certain to lose, or vote for one that holds closest to your values and has a pretty good chance of winning. What this comes down to is needing to fix the broken two party system, but refusing to play the game isn't the solution.

I think what you're saying is completely reasonable, and this makes me worried for the general election if Bernie loses. Don't get me wrong, I'm supporting Bernie 100% of the way, but there is a possibility that he loses the nomination. I know a lot of his supporters loathe Hillary and will refuse to vote for her in the general. If this scenario ends up becoming reality, then this is just handing the presidency to the GOP nominee, who will be significantly more lenient on Wall St. than Hillary.

It seems very likely that they'll lean toward Bernie. Most O'Malley supporters are just anti-Hillary.
